Our CANADA ROAD TRIP to VANCOUVER ISLAND, British Columbia Starts NOW!
Today we are kicking off a trip that we’ve been wanting to do for a very long time: a road trip across the length of Vancouver Island! Sam grew up on the West Coast but moved away when he went to university, and I had never been there, so it was high time we both visited. To make things even more special, when our dads heard we were travelling to Vancouver Island, they both decided to come along, so we embarked on this road trip as a gang of 4! This is the first episode of our Vancouver Island road trip and it was mostly a travel day. We flew from Toronto to Vancouver to Victoria, and then picked up a rental car at the airport. We had to drive up to Mount Washington, which would act as our base for the first few days, but on the way up there we also stopped in the town of Chemainus, which is known for its many murals, and in Cathedral Grove, where we saw Douglas-fir trees that are over 800 years old! It was a great first day on the island. More to come soon! You can view the full list of all the places we visited here:

Our CANADA ROAD TRIP to VANCOUVER ISLAND, British Columbia Starts NOW!
Come join us for an epic road trip to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada where partner with Trover to cover the island from the south all the way up to the north. Unlike most Vancouver Island road trips and travel series which focus on the triangle of Vancouver, Nanaimo and Tofino, we branch off and visit lesser-known places such as Gold River, Port Alice and Malcolm Island just to name a few.
Our trip to Vancouver Island starts off with a flight from Toronto to Vancouver, followed by the shortest flight of our lives from Vancouver to Victoria. From Victoria, we head to our base of Mount Washington in the central part of the island, where highlights include spotting black bears, hiking in Mount Washington and visiting vineyards in Comox.
Our journey then continues to Gold River, Sam's hometown, where we board the Uchuck III en route to Friendly Cove. We also go to nearby Campbell River where we walk along a beautiful fishing dock, tour a hatchery and come across a black bear, and hike in Elk Falls which was our favourite hike on this entire journey.
Heading to northern Vancouver Island, we base ourselves in Port Alice and visit the nearby towns of Port McNeill, Port Hardy and Telegraph Cove. For separate day trips, we take the ferry to Malcolm Island where we visit the former Finnish Community of Sointula and take another ferry to Alert Bay where we have the opportunity to appreciate First Nations totem poles, artwork and museums.
Our Vancouver Island road trip concludes with visits to Parksville, Nanaimo and Victoria. Overall, it was one of the best road trips we've ever done focusing mostly on nature, outdoor adventure, wildlife spotting and visiting off-the-beaten-path villages and communities that have a lot to offer but aren't that well known.
If you are thinking of doing a Canada road trip, Vancouver Island should be at the top of your list. For more information and tips on all the places we visited on Vancouver Island, you can check out this Trover list:

Where You Live: Central Saanich
Welcome to our Central Saanich edition of Where You Live!
Just 20 minutes from downtown Victoria, it is here you're find some of the freshest produce being grown on lovely acreages, surrounded by the ocean on both the east and west side of this municipality. It is also home to one of the biggest tourist attractions in the province, and is a perfect example of rural meets a touch of urban. Come join us as we explore this beautiful slice of South Vancouver Island.
Kayaking with Orca, or Killer Whales off Sooke, BC on Vancouver Island.
Theyre All Around Us!
Who knew when I woke up on this Thursday morning that it was going to be an extraordinary day that would produce a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
It was a beautiful afternoon with calm seas; so, Allan from West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals and I decided to take the Hobie kayaks for a spin. Heading out towards Secretary Island just off Sooke, BC in the Juan de Fuca Strait, we got word there was a large pod of Orcas close by. We were so excited to receive this news and at the prospect of seeing killer whales; we were immediately intrigued. As luck would have it, the whales were just as intrigued by us.
We could see the whales were swimming near Otter Point, about a mile and a half from where we drifted and bobbed about like buoys in our kayaks. We could just make out the black specks of dorsal fins on the horizon. The killer whales were hugging the shoreline, so we were completely amazed at the events that would take place over the next 30 minutes.
Even though we were in the open, usually turbulent, waters of the Juan de Fuca Strait, we were in a flood tide so paddling was smooth—effortless. We held our position and the whales got closer, and closer. The entire pod was heading our way. The pod got a little closer, then a lot closer. Then they were all around us! And under us! And beside us!
A mother and her calf gave us an unbelievable experience; if I hadnt caught the scene on video, I would never have believed it. I can wholeheartedly say that this was one of the most stunning, thrilling (and scary!) events of my life. Mother and baby swam straight towards us, and dove directly in front of the bow of my kayak. I could see them both swimming under my kayak and then disappear into the depths. Not knowing where or when then would emerge, I sat in anticipation. And then, they surfaced directly in front of my kayak.
Wow. Unbelievable! They were all around us. Dont believe me? Think Im exaggerating? This is no fishermans tall tale, and I have the video to prove it. Join me on my adventure and watch this astonishing recount.
Dont forget to check out the official Discover Sooke Online website to learn more about Sooke businesses and our community discoversooke.com.
West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals is located at Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina
***UPDATE***
We'd like like to let everyone know that we have been in contact with the DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) as they had some concerns about this video.
We assured them that our intentions that day were NOT to intentionally place ourselves in the middle of whales, but rather head out in hopes that we might witness them passing by from a safe distance.
L-POD were spaced out about 1km in diameter, which placed us amongst them before we even knew it as they were close to shore and moving very quickly. We felt that we didn't have the ability to safely move out of the way nor did we have the time. They appeared around us as quickly as it started. There were fishing vessels and a whale watching boat near us, so we felt we were doing the proper thing by just staying where everyone else was.
West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals does not rental kayaks for the Strait of Juan de Fuca and are only used in the Sooke Harbour and Basin. These were not rented, we were on our own time.
For whale guidelines and regulations, please vist the Whale Wise website:

Best Things to Do Victoria, BC Danny Hauger Travel Podcasts July 2019 Sightseeing Visit
Victoria, British Columbia, was the sight of the summer 2019 edition of Danny Hauger Travel Podcasts. This is a mostly quiet montage of sightseeing in Victoria to enjoy without commentary. The images tell the story of British Columbia's Capitol! I thoroughly enjoyed many of the finest sightseeing attractions, courtesy of a few passes from Victoria tourism, but I was not paid for my reviews. Enjoy my list of the best things to do on your vacation to Victoria. come and see one of Canada's most beautiful and attractive cities.
YYJ AIrport Shuttle provided the easiest form for reserving a shuttle ahead of time in Victoria that I have ever utilized. Being able to have an instant confirmation, a fast checkout, and a variety of drop-off points besides the major hotel accommodations in the area made my travel day easier. Driver went above and beyond to be hospitable, humorous, and told us stories about the city of Victoria.
Adrenaline ziplining - Ziplining is exhilarating fun for all ages. My first experience was in Juneau, and when I started to plan a trip with my mom I was trying to think about something memorable that would make this experience unforgettable. It had to be safe, but I wanted some adventure that was fun that she had never tried before. She has traveled all over the world, and ziplining had never been on her itinerary, until now. The guides were skilled, efficient, and friendly. This is pure fun for any ages 7-70! A good time was had by everyone and the team is very helpful. My mom kept saying what a good time she had.
Sizzling Tandoor - Our first dinner in Victoria was full of spice, flavor, and friendly service. Sizzling tandoori is a stellar location - get two samosas to warm up the palette with a beautifully balanced flavor, chicken tikka with rice, and garlic naan! The perfect size email for two, do not miss it! Good happy hour specials too! Wonderfully nice server and a brilliant dinner (mild, asked for it), without getting overpowered.
On July 19, 2019, I had the pleasure of embarking on a whale watching tour and had a close-up encounter with Scratch the Humpback whale with Orca Spirit Adventures in Victoria, BC. The whale had been seen circling the area, and we had a few far away shots with our cameras. Then, right before it was time to head back to the docks in Victoria, Scratchy came much closer to say hello! It was a beautiful day with mostly clear skies and calm water. It was the only whale we saw, but the awesomeness of the experience was a once-in-a-decade close up that very few people get to see on a whale watching tour. Thank you to our guides did a wonderful job and Captain Jeremy had us in the right place, peacefully sitting and patiently waiting, to experience this beautiful interaction. Thank you Orca Spirit Adventures in Victoria! The history, preservation, knowledge, and friendliness of the guides would have been well worth the trip, even before this stunning sighting. Very enjoyable!
Taste of Victoria
taste of Victoria Walking Tours - This tour gives you a taste, and a place - a sense of what Victoria is today, and what it has been in history. This tour was worth every part of 5-stars. Andy is an energetic, informative, hard-working, and diligent tour guide who has carefully curated OUTSTANDING stops in Victoria. Andy has a genuine interest in the foods, history, and treats he presents. He exceeding our expectations. On our walking tour of Chinatown and Old Town we enjoyed fabulous meatballs at Roast, Perogies, Macha, Chocolate, and a local Cider, plus more. Every minute was worthwhile and the amounts of food, walking, and learning were perfect.

Floathomes move with the wind and tides
in our protected harbour. Our homes are flat- bottomed and wide, unlike keeled boats, so we do not pitch and rollA family-friendly community; an inherited community for new comers
Fisherman’s Wharf Community
Association (FWCA) a non-profit society Float home Owners are automatically
voting members of the FWCA. Wharf meetings – socials (monthly potluck dinners); fund-raising ventures and environmental dock events are enjoyed in our village of about 60 wharfies.
Our association has been recognized by Tourism Victoria as an Environmental Award winner for our efforts in protecting the environment.
How they are built
The foundations of our floating homes are concrete hulls, or polyethylene-covered styrofoam billets Floathomes are generally very low maintenance
Transportation – many alternatives available...bus (terminal at top of park), water taxi, bike, or parking for your car Open minded and diverse people live here. Created with our landlord, we have agreed to a common set of rules and guidelines to best suit our chosen lifestyles
An incredible showcase park is in our backyard ... just above the parking lot Our friendly visitors, tourists, and guests (local, national and international) are inquisitive about our lifestyle and our homes ... we’re thrilled to talk with them
A busy vibrant dock life by day; peace and quiet with privacy at night
The market for floathomes is more seasonal than typical residential markets. At certain times of the year there are more of our homes for sale than at other times.
Victoria - Thanks to the rain effect of the nearby Olympic Mountains, Victoria receives 38% of the annual rainfall of Vancouver... Sunniest of Canada’s major cities in the summer ... no mosquitoes ... a thunderstorm about once every two years or so (two storms on two consecutive days this year)...a truly “Mediterranean” locale.
Cool in summer, temperate in winter...
our temperature is moderated by the 10 °C Pacific Ocean ... seldom too hot, never too cold. According to the Victoria News newspaper,
Fisherman’s Wharf is the Sixth top rated tourist attraction in Greater Victoria.
While we do not rent our floathomes, we are allowed “paying-caretakers” to occupy our homes (while we are absent) for up to six months. Also, we can rent-out-a-room or have room-mates. We own our homes, but lease our water lots.
Constantly changing parade of boats, floatplanes, ferries and wildlife (otters, sea mink, seals, many types of birds, herons, and racoons)
Ringside seats for harbour events, i.e. fireworks displays; the Swiftsure annual international sailboat races; the Antique boat show; or paddle over to see Symphony Splash in the inner harbour
