De Pere River Walk
A few years ago the City of DePere, and the State of Wisconsin replaced our 70 year old bridge across the Fox River. Teh old bridge was just below the first dam on the Fox. The new bridge is just above the dam.
There is also an old Lock system on the Fox, from the late 19th century, when there was much commercial water traffic. The locks were operated by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Today the state runs the locks, and the city has taken over Government Island, which is where the old lock keepers house is located.
The city has just complete phase one of the project to open the island and the rever front to the public. There is a new pedestrian bridge just below the lock, and a walkway along the length of Gov't Island.
The future plans are to have a fishing pier, and a bird watching pier. The bird watching pier will be at the same location as the old bridge.
This weekend is the first that the walk way has been open to the public.
River Walk - De Pere, WI
A wonderful walk on the trail. It seems spring is finally here: the temperatures were in the 70's and the geese were guarding their eggs along the banks of the river.
