Syria: Al-Mushrifah residents receive aid from Russian personnel
Russian military personnel distributed humanitarian aid packages to residents of the village of Al-Mushrifah in the province of Homs as shown by footage released on Saturday.
Families, many of whom lost relatives as a result of the conflict in Syria, gathered next to Russian trucks to receive the packages that usually contain sugar, flour, grains, canned fish and meat and other dried rations.

ISIS destroys part Of Roman theater in Palmyra - Syrian antiquities chief
Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists have destroyed part of a Roman theater and the legendary four-column structure ‘Tetrapylon’ in the ancient city of Palmyra, the Syrian antiquities chief said.
The facade of the Roman theater has been completely destroyed, according to Maamoun Abdulkarim, the Syrian director-general for antiquities and museums, as cited by Reuters.
If Islamic State is not ousted from Palmyra in the near future, “it means more destruction,” Abdulkarim added.

The scale of damage is currently unknown.
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova describes the act as “a new war crime and an immense loss for the Syrian people and for humanity.”
“As far as we know, Syrian forces keep on trying to liberate this city and all other from terrorists,” Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters, according to TASS.
Peskov declined to comment on whether Russia is planning to help the Syrian Army liberate Palmyra, forwarding the question to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Peskov added that “Russian soldiers are assisting Syrians in their fight against terrorists.”
IS took control of Palmyra from Syrian troops in December for the second time, after the city was liberated by Syria’s government forces, backed by Russian air power, in March.
Syrian President Bashar Assad stated that IS managed to retake Palmyra, “backed by Americans, under surveillance of the US drones; they came from the side of the desert and retook Palmyra.”

“ISIS was created under the supervision of the United States... and later Turkey sponsored this State. So we cannot expect to have genuine fight against ISIS by Turkey or the United States, and the recent, more stark example is the attack on Palmyra a few weeks ago,” the Syrian leader told Japanese broadcaster TBS, in an interview also published on the SANA agency website.
“Today, we are talking, and ISIS has been attacking Deir Ezzor in the eastern part of Syria, and the Americans did nothing to stop ISIS.
This is where the so-called international alliance against terrorism has been working for more than one year and a half now, and they achieved nothing, because they are not serious, Assad added.
The ancient city of Palmyra was one of the most important centers of the Roman Empire. Its monuments are included as a UNESCO World Heritage site. After the site was recaptured by government forces last year, reconstruction began to repair extensive damage done by IS.
In particular, experts were working on is a remarkable Lion of Allat statue from the 1st century AD, as well as the Arch of Triumph, the Temple of Baalshamin and the iconic 2,000-year-old Bel Temple.

23 civilians killed by US-led air strikes in eastern Deir al-Zour province
A Britain-based war monitor says 23 Syrian civilians were killed on Wednesday by air strikes carried out by a US-led coalition. The monitor says the civilians were hiding inside a house in a village in the eastern Deir al-Zour province. US-backed forces are currently battling to capture the last scraps of ISIL-controlled territory in the area. The US military says the coalition strikes only valid military targets.

Mari (modern Tell Hariri, Syria) was an ancient Sumerian and Amorite city, located 11 kilometers north-west of the modern town of Abu Kamal on the western bank of Euphrates river, some 120 km southeast of Deir ez-Zor, Syria. It is thought to have been inhabited since the 5th millennium BC, although it flourished with series of superimposed palaces that spans a thousand years, from 2900 BC until 1759 BC, when it was sacked by Hammurabi. Mari was discovered in 1933, on the eastern flank of Syria, near the Iraqi border. A Bedouin tribe was digging through a mound for a gravestone that would be used for a recently deceased tribesman, when they came across a headless statue. After the news reached the French authorities currently in control of Syria, the report was investigated, and digging on the site was started on December 14, 1933 by archaeologists from the Louvre in Paris. Discoveries came quickly, with the temple of Ishtar being discovered in the next month. Mari was classified by the archaeologists as the most westerly outpost of Sumerian culture.[citation needed] Since the beginning of excavations, over 25,000 clay tablets in Akkadian language written in cuneiform were discovered. Finds from the excavation are on display in the National Museum of Aleppo, the National Museum of Damascus, and the Deir ez-Zor Museum. In the latter, the southern façade of the Court of the Palms of Zimri-Lim's palace has been reconstructed, including the wall paintings.[2]

Mari has been excavated in annual campaigns published in Syria, 1933--39, 1951--75, and since 1979; a journal devoted to the site since 1982, is Mari: Annales de recherches interdisciplinaires. The 21 seasons up to 1975 were led by André Parrot. Less than half of the 1000 x 600-meter area of Mari has been uncovered as of 2005. Although archaeologists have tried to determine how many layers the site descends, it has not proved possible as of 2008. According to French archaeologist André Parrot, each time a vertical probe was commenced in order to trace the site's history down to virgin soil, such important discoveries were made that horizontal digging had to be resumed.
