Derby was settled by Romans – who established the town of Derventio – Saxons and Vikings, who made Derby one of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw. Initially a market town, Derby grew rapidly in the industrial era. Home to Lombe's Mill, an early British factory, Derby has a claim to be one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution. It contains the southern part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. With the arrival of the railways in the 19th century, Derby became a centre of the British rail industry.
Derby is a centre for advanced transport manufacturing, home to the world’s second largest aero-engine manufacturer, Rolls-Royce, and Derby Litchurch Lane Works, for many years the UK's only train manufacturer. The Derby Silk Mill, next to the River Derwent, is at the southern end of the UNESCO Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. It is reputed to be the world's first factory, powered by one source, a water wheel, with raw material going in at one end, and finished goods coming out of the other. The mill was opened in 1721 to spin silk thread in large quantities.

Poppies: Weeping Window at the Silk Mill in Derby
Derby’s always had a legacy of producing things, making things, right from the Enlightenment period and the Victorian industrial period. The Silk Mill itself was hugely important to produce medical supplies and Derby produced a huge amount of material for the First World War effort.’ – Dr Mike Galer, Local Historian
Poppies: Weeping Window
BY PAUL CUMMINS ARTIST AND TOM PIPER DESIGNER

THE SILK MILL, DERBY
During the First World War, Derby Silk Mill was divided into two businesses, one grinding corn and the other making medical supplies, both integral to the British war effort and scarce by 1916.
Derby as a whole played a vital part in production during the course of the First World War with Rolls-Royce developing the Eagle Engine at the request of the government to power allied aircraft. As Derby Silk Mill: Museum of Making the museum now holds a great number of industrial and social history objects which help us to tell the stories of Derby’s companies and its communities.
A cascade comprising several thousand handmade ceramic poppies, the sculpture was originally seen pouring from a high window to the ground below at the Tower of London as part of the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red.
