A Walk in Newcastle Upon Tyne England Newcastle Upon Tyne is commonly known as Newcastle.
Newcastle Upon Tyne commonly known as Newcastle is a city in Tyne and Wear, North East England, 103 miles (166 km) south of Edinburgh and 277 miles (446 km) north of London on the northern bank of the River Tyne, 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. Newcastle is the most populous city in the North East and forms the core of the Tyneside conurbation, the eighth-most populous urban area in the United Kingdom.[2] Newcastle is a member of the English Core Cities Group[6] and is a member of the Eurocities network of European cities. The Quayside
The Tyne Gorge, between Newcastle on the north bank and Gateshead—a separate town and borough—on the south bank, is known for a series of dramatic bridges, including the Tyne Bridge of 1928 which was built by Dorman Long of Middlesbrough, Robert Stephenson's High Level Bridge of 1849, the first road/rail bridge in the world, and the Swing Bridge of 1876.[85]
Large-scale regeneration has replaced former shipping premises with imposing new office developments; an innovative tilting bridge, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge was commissioned by Gateshead Council and has integrated the older Newcastle Quayside more closely with major cultural developments in Gateshead, including the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, the venue for the Turner Prize 2011[86] and the Norman Foster-designed The Sage Gateshead music centre. The Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides are now a thriving, cosmopolitan area with bars, restaurants and public spaces. As a tourist promotion, Newcastle and Gateshead have linked together under the banner NewcastleGateshead, to spearhead the regeneration of the North-East. The River Tyne had the temporary Bambuco Bridge in 2008 for ten days; it was not made for walking, road or cycling, but was just a sculpture.
Newcastle was part of the county of Northumberland until 1400 when it became a county of itself, a status it retained until becoming part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. The regional nickname and dialect for people from Newcastle and the surrounding area are Geordie. Newcastle also houses Newcastle University, a member of the Russell Group, as well as Northumbria University.
The city developed around the Roman settlement Pons Aelius and was named after the castle built in 1080 by Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade in the 14th century and later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the River Tyne, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres.
Newcastle's economy includes corporate headquarters, learning, digital technology, retail, tourism and cultural centres, from which the city contributes £13 billion towards the United Kingdom's GVA. Among its icons are Newcastle United football club and the Tyne Bridge. Since 1981 the city has hosted the Great North Run, a half marathon which attracts over 57,000 runners each year.

Newcastle city tour 2013 HD
Newcastle is situated in the North East of England, in the ceremonial county of Tyne and Wear and the historical and traditional county of Northumberland. The city is located on the northern bank of the River Tyne.
In large parts, Newcastle still retains a mediaeval street layout. Narrow alleys or 'chares', most of which can only be traversed by foot, still exist in abundance, particularly around the riverside. Stairs from the riverside to higher parts of the city centre and the extant Castle Keep, originally recorded in the 14th century, remain in places. Close, Sandhill and Quayside contain modern buildings as well as structures dating from the 15th--18th centuries, including Bessie Surtees House.
In the Google Street View awards of 2010, Grey Street came 3rd in the British picturesque category. A portion of Grainger Town was demolished in the 1960s to make way for the Eldon Square Shopping Centre, including all but one side of the original Eldon Square itself.
Immediately to the northwest of the city centre is Leazes Park, established in 1873 after a petition by 3,000 working men of the city for ready access to some open ground for the purpose of health and recreation. Just outside one corner of this is St James' Park, the stadium home of Newcastle United F.C. which dominates the view of the city from all directions.

Newcastle UK
This week we're in Newcastle Uk.
At first we thought it was just another English city. But in reality the city is an interesting party town. At night the central city area is abuzz with nightlife, including restaurants, bars, pubs and nightclubs. The city centre revolves around the the Tyne River and subsequently the Tyne Bridge which bears a striking resemblance to the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia.
The inner city is built with large sweeping avenues and sandstone buildings resembling many in London. It is a great walking city being compact enough to enable anyone fit enough to walk between its famous icons. Its like a mini version of London. The inner suburbs typically have streets rowed with terrace houses which is something of an icon in itself.
The initial history of the city begins with the Roman settlement of Pons Aelius founded by the roman emperor Hadrian, whos famous wall can still be seen running through parts of the city.
The Cathedral Church of St Nicholas is the main cathederal in town whos spire can be seen from many parts of the city. Close to the cathedral is Newcastle Castle, which gave the city its name, and which was itself built on the site of the Hadrian's Wall fort of Pons Aelius.
There are lots of museums in Newcastle, we were able to vist two, The life sciences centre which had some really interesting exhibits including plastination of various animals and human bodies.... look up plastination. Its not for the faint hearted! The second Museum being the Discovery Museum which had a lot of interesting hisorical information on Newcastle.
If driving to the City, You'll pass the Angel of the North, A virtual Gateway to the City.
P.S. Check out the kitty at around 2.00. We were looking after him for a few days while his owners were away. He provided many hours of boisterous fun while we stayed in and regained our travel energy.

Places to see in ( Newcastle upon Tyne - UK ) The Quayside
Places to see in ( Newcastle upon Tyne - UK ) The Quayside
The Quayside is an area along the banks (quay) of the River Tyne in Newcastle upon Tyne (the north bank) and Gateshead (south bank) in the North East of England, United Kingdom.
The area was once an industrial area and busy commercial dockside serving the area, while the Newcastle side also hosted a regular street market. In recent years the docks became run-down, and the area has since been heavily redeveloped to provide a modern environment for the modern arts, music and culture, as well as new housing developments (e.g. at St Peter's Marina). The NewcastleGateshead initiative now lists the Quayside as a top ten attraction.
Along the Newcastle side is an area that houses restaurants, bars and night clubs as well as housing and the Newcastle Law Courts. Quayside is also the name of the street running along the Newcastle riverside.
The Gateshead side of the river is designated and signposted as Gateshead Quays. It is the site of the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead performing arts and conference centre. Also moored on the Gateshead side from 1984 until 2008 was the Tuxedo Princess (replaced for a time by sister ship Tuxedo Royale), a floating nightclub, beneath the Tyne Bridge near The Sage.
One of the Quayside's main features is the pedestrian Gateshead Millennium Bridge, opened in 2001, which spans the river between the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Newcastle Law Courts. The other bridge which allows direct road and pedestrian links between the two banks is the low level Swing Bridge, built in 1876, and located nearer the two respective city centres. Using the two bridges, the Quayside is the venue for the junior course of the annual Great North Run.

Vlog #23: London, England (Part 1) || TOWER BRIDGE IN THE DAY AND NIGHT
Days 81-85
We are so excited to be back in London!
We caught a coach with National Express and stayed at Diver Castle Hostel and Bar. On our first night we went to the Ministry of Sound (which we don't recommend.) We spent our first day at London Bridge, the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. Then at night went to the bar at the Shard and enjoyed views of London from above.
The next day we checked out St. Paul's Cathedral, the modern art at Tate Modern, and Shakespeare's Globe. That night we went to the Tower Bridge and got to watch it open up for a ship passing through.
The following day we visited Trafalgar Square and then National Gallery. That evening we walked along the south bank to the London Eye and then Big Ben. We really loved seeing them light up at night.
We also went to the British Museum and then went shopping on Oxford Street. We then spent our last night at the Tower Bridge and got to see it light up at night.

Places to see in ( Jedburgh - UK )
Places to see in ( Jedburgh - UK )
Jedburgh is a town and former royal burgh in the Scottish Borders and the traditional county town of the historic county of Roxburghshire. Jedburgh lies on the Jed Water, a tributary of the River Teviot. It is 10 miles (16 km) from the border with England, and is dominated by the substantial ruins of Jedburgh Abbey. Other notable buildings in the town include Mary, Queen of Scots' House, Jedburgh Castle Jail, now a museum, and the Carnegie library.
Bishop Ecgred of Lindisfarne founded a church at Jedburgh in the 9th century, and King David I of Scotland made it a priory between 1118 and 1138, housing Augustinian monks from Beauvais in France. The abbey was founded in 1147, but border wars with England in the 16th century left it a ruin. The deeply religious Scottish king Malcolm IV died at Jedburgh in 1165, aged 24. His death is thought to have been caused by excessive fasting. David I built a castle at Jedburgh, and in 1174, it was one of five fortresses ceded to England. It was an occasional royal residence for the Scots, but captured by the English so often that it was eventually demolished in 1409, by which time it was the last English stronghold in Scotland.
In 1258, Jedburgh was a focus of royal attention, with negotiations between Scotland's Alexander III and England's Henry III over the succession to the Scottish throne, leaving the Comyn faction dominant. Alexander III was married in the abbey in 1285. Lord of Jedburgh Forest was a Lordship of Parliament that was granted to George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus on his marriage to the Princess Mary, daughter of Robert III in 1397. It is a subsidiary title of the present Earl of Angus, the Duke of Hamilton. The Duke of Douglas was raised to the position of Viscount Jedburgh Forest, but he died without an heir in 1761.
In 1787, the geologist James Hutton noted what is now known as the Hutton Unconformity at Inchbonny, near Jedburgh. Layers of sedimentary rock which are tilted almost vertically are covered by newer horizontal layers of red sandstone. This was one of the findings that led him to develop his concept of an immensely long geologic time scale with no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end.
The Canongate Brig dates from the 16th century, and there are some fine riverside walks. The Capon Oak Tree is reputed to be 2000 years old, and Newgate Prison and the town spire are among the town's older buildings. The town's industries included textiles, tanning and glove-making, grain mills, and electrical engineering. Central to the festival and customs associated with the town of Jedburgh are the Jedforest Instrumental Band who support many civic, religious and social events throughout the year, a service provided consistently since 1854.
Although Jedburgh no longer has any rail access it is well located on the road network. The A68 provides direct access to Edinburgh (48 miles (77 km)) and Newcastle-upon-Tyne (58 miles (93 km)). Carlisle is 57 miles (92 km) away and Hawick, Kelso, Selkirk and Galashiels are all within 20 miles (30 km). Jedburgh is well known to motorists from the Edinburgh and Newcastle-upon-Tyne areas as Jedburgh is a control town to direct road traffic on the A68. Bus services to Jedburgh are provided by Perryman's Buses, Peter Hogg. Until July 2013 services were mostly run by local operator Munro's of Jedburgh.

Our trip to Newcastle
Just for one night we stayed in Newcastle, North-East England. It has a few nice sights, but is more of a shopping and nightlife magnet for the locals around, not really a recommendable tourist hotspot.

A walk around Newcastle City Centre
A walk around the historic city centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne, taking in the city's oldest church, a famous football club, the electric light bulb, the birthplace of a Catholic leader, haunted theatres and a hospital which wasn't a hospital...
