Fall in Love with Florida: Devil's Millhopper State Park
Beautiful Devils Millhopper Geological State Park. We enjoyed a nice hike and a view into this huge, ancient sinkhole. Waterfalls all around us made this seem like a scene from Appalachia. Just outside Gainsville, Fl this is one to definitely check out.

Devil's Millhopper Hiking the Steps
Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park is a bowl-shaped cavity 120 feet deep that leads down to a miniature rain forest. Small streams trickle down the steep slopes of the limestone sinkhole, disappearing through crevices in the ground. Lush vegetation thrives in the shade of the walls even in dry summers.
A significant geological formation, Devil's Millhopper is a National Natural Landmark that has been visited by the curious since the early 1880s. Researchers have learned a great deal about Florida's natural history by studying fossil shark teeth, marine shells and the fossilized remains of extinct land animals found in the sink. Visitors can enjoy picnicking and learn more about this sinkhole through interpretive displays.
Admission to the park is $4.00 per vehicle, up to 8 visitors per vehicle. Pedestrians and bikes are $2.00
Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park is open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Wednesday through Sunday. The park is closed Monday and Tuesday.
Be sure to check the Devil's Millhopper Website to ensure the steps are open after Hurricane's Matthew and Irma.

Paynes Prairie Preserve – Gainesville Florida – Exploratory day trip May 07, 2015
A nice park with some interesting features. Thanks goes to the ranger at the main entrance (am) who suggested I check out the La Chua trail area. I probably would not have visited that area if he hadn't suggested it. I'm going to research and see if there is a best season to see the bison and horses. Would be cool to see them in the wild...

What we did in Gainesville Florida, with kids, for a whole day.
We went on a mini road trip with our kids, from Orlando to Gainesville. There are quite a few things to see in and around Gainesville, but we’ve settled on four places to visit:
1) Devil’s Millhopper State Park
2) Florida Natural Museum
3) Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and
4) The Ecopassage Observation Boardwalk (part of the state park but no fee is required)
We’ve managed to visit all the places we have planned to see, and we truly enjoyed the Florida specific landscapes, sights and sounds. All in all, the trip was excellent and I would probably repeat it in a year, maybe. Gainesville is a lovely city and offers a lot of areas for outdoor activities, but I would not go out of my way, from Orlando, to visit too often.
Here are some tips & useful info:
Devil’s Millhoper State Park
The main attraction, the mini rainforest experience (the boardwalk that leads into the sinkhole) is currently closed. If you can, plan your visit after October 2018, when the park management plans to reopen the boardwalk.
Florida Natural Museum
The entrance fee to the museum is free. They do charge for the Butterfly Rainforest & the Bat exhibits - if you are a Florida resident you get a discount for both.
Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park
This was well worth the visit and one could spend a whole day in the park. We did only a few things because it was close to the end of our day in Gainesville, but it’s a fantastic place to visit with kids. The entrance fee was $6 per vehicle.
The Ecopassage Observation Boardwalk
We’ve missed this on our way to Gainesville coming from Orlando, but after our stop at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, we saw it on the map, asked around and then we drove back towards Gainesville. You will not find this (yet) on google maps - here’s how to get to this point:
From Orlando (or from Paynes State Park), take the US-441 North, towards Gainesville. There is a sign for Paynes Prairie Bolen Bluff - reduce your speed, and you will see another sign for the Ecopassage Boardwalk. Parking space is limited, but we found no issue finding parking as not too many people stop by.

Abandoned Tung Nut Depot in San Felasco Hammock Preserve
I found this abandoned building while exploring in San Felasco Hammock Preserve. This is an old Tung Nut Depot and this is some history behind it - This building, known as the Tung Nut Depot, was associated with the tung oil industry which was well-established in Alachua County by the 1930s. Tung oil is extracted from the 'nut' (actually from a seed of the fruit of the tung tree) and is used in the production of paint, varnish, printing ink, linoleum and other products. Tung trees were originally imported from China and cultivated on plantations in the southern United States.

Florida Travel: Dive & Snorkel the Famous Devil's Den
On a cold winter morning you can see steam, like smoke, rising from the chimney. Thus, the early settlers gave the name Devil's Den. Crystal clear water, year round 72 degree temperatures, ancient rock formations with stalactites, fossil beds, and much more. Devil's Den is truly a natural wonder. Bring the family and enjoy a day of fun and relaxation at Devil's Den.
Sinkhole
A sinkhole, also known as a sink-hole, sink, swallow hole, shakehole, swallet or doline, is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer. Some are caused by karst processes—for example, the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks or suffosion processes.
Sinkholes may vary in size from 1 to 600 m (3.3 to 2,000 ft) both in diameter and depth, and vary in form from soil-lined bowls to bedrock-edged chasms. Sinkholes may be formed gradually or suddenly, and are found worldwide. The different terms for sinkholes are often used interchangeably.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
