Scuba diving Dionisio Point in Porlier Pass Feb 2010
The best diving on the east side of Vancouver Island is often found in the passes. These passes are rich nutrient fed regions. Here we were diving Porlier Pass between Valdez and Galiano Islands in the region known as the Southern gulf Islands in the Salish Sea. Diving here is done at slack, due to the very high currents that reach 10 knots at times. We were lucky on this dive to find an Octopus who also wanted to take advantage of the slack current to come out of his/her den and go hunting.

Galiano Learning Adventure
This is a summary video of the sea-kayaking learning adventure on trip Galiano Island!
September block break a group of Quest students took a kayaking trip through Porlier Pass to spend the night at Dionisio Provincial Park, one of the most beautiful marine parks in British Columbia. On our journey we explored an area of major cultural significance in coastal First Nations history, as well as the imperiled Coastal Douglas-fir bioregion. We hiked along a trail which crosses the Mid-Galiano Protected Area Network leading back to the Learning Centre.
In navigating the marine and terrestrial environment, we took an innovative orienteering approach to learning about and connecting to the island.
This is just a teaser, a documentary is (hopefully) coming soon!
We own no part of the song used in the video.
Galiano Island | Mary Ohara ~ Early life at the Northend of Galiano Island 1930/40's | 14Nov12
Galiano Island welcomed Mary Ohara back to our shores this last week. For background on this story I quote a message from Bonnie Macgillivray, Galiano's School Trustee that she sent in preparation for Mary Ohara's visit to Galiano - she wrote .....
Mary Ohara, Sometimes a gift is passed to you. In the middle of the summer I received an email from shaw. Being naturally skeptical and fearing the almighty virus I almost deleted it. Something, somewhere made me open it. The email was from Reed Oh, a name I did not recognize but I read on. Reed was contacting me as the School Trustee for Galiano and Reed had a mission. Reed was interested in fulfilling a deep regret of his Nana's.
Her dream of receiving her High School diploma had been interrupted by the Second World War, the internment of our Japanese communities all around British Columbia and subsequent exile to Japan. This was a dream Reed hoped that I could help fulfill. This has been the gift to me, the Galiano community and School District #64, Gulf Islands. Since that initial email Reed and I have been communicating back and forth. Reed has been sending me pictures and information about Nana. Kazuyo (Mary) Ohara was born on Galiano in 1929 in the Japanese fishing community located @ the North End of Galiano Island.
She attended school at the North End until her family moved to Salt Spring where she and her siblings attended Salt Spring Elementary School. Mary loved school and fully participated in all the social and academic aspects of school life. Then on December 07th, 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour and although Mary had never been in Japan and was a Canadian Citizen this international incident changed her whole life. Mary and her family were removed from Salt Spring Island, all their property confiscated, interned at Lemon Creek and after the war, sent to Japan. Mary Ohara never completed her education.
On November 14th Reed brought Mary to Galiano Community School where she gave a presentation about the Galiano Japanese fishing community and she told her story. This video is an excerpt from that presentation.
In Part 2 - Unbeknownst to Mary, our school community and the Galiano community was to celebrate Mary and the Gulf Island Board of Education presented her with an Honorary High School Diploma. Her whole family then walked into the Gym to be part of this special celebration.

Galiano Island Touring Trip - How we made it happen - Portuguese Traveler & Nomad
This video is about a short but amazing bike touring trip to Dioniso Point Provincial park, located in the southern gulf island of British Columbia. We found ourselves at the very north end of Galiano Island, where we had the chance to just be one with nature. Note, this park is marine or foot access only.

Scuba Dive on Spanish Hills Galiano Island in the southern Gulf Islands Feb 2010
One of the great non slack dives you can do near Porlier Pass is the Spanish Hills wall.
It can be done as a shore dive from the public dock on Galiano, but it is a better experience with a live boat. There is sometimes a small amount of current, you do not want to get caught at the wrong end of the wall at the end of your dive as there is no where to get out easily.
Glorious Galiano Island | Come take a Walk on The Bluffs 4-500 feet above Active Pass!
We invite you to plan a visit to Galiano Island - it is only a 50 minute ferry ride from Vancouver's Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal and is place worlds apart from urban life. There's an incredibly scenic short walk along Galiano's famed Bluff Park where you can see clear across every one of our Canadian Southern Gulf Islands. The higher elevation is Galiano and across Active Pass are (in order) Mayne Island (Helen Point), North & South Pender Islands & Saturna with the Olympic Peninsula in the far distance.

SUMMARY
=======
Vancouver Island is in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Canadian province of British Columbia. The island is 460 kilometres (290 mi) in length, 100 kilometres (62 mi) in width at its widest point, and 32,134 km2 (12,407 sq mi) in area. It is the largest island on the West Coast of North America.
The southern part of Vancouver Island and some of the nearby Gulf Islands are the only parts of British Columbia or Western Canada to lie south of the 49th Parallel. This area has one of the warmest climates in Canada, and since the mid-1990s has been mild enough in a few areas to grow subtropical Mediterranean crops such as olives and lemons.Vancouver Island had a population in 2016 of 775,347. Nearly half of that figure (367,770) live in the metropolitan area of Greater Victoria. Other notable cities and towns on Vancouver Island include Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Parksville, Courtenay, and Campbell River. Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, is located on the island, but the larger city of Vancouver is not – it is on the North American mainland, across the Strait of Georgia from Nanaimo.
Vancouver Island has been the homeland to many indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The island was explored by British and Spanish expeditions in the late 18th century. It was named Quadra's and Vancouver's Island in commemoration of the friendly negotiations held in 1792 by Spanish commander of the Nootka Sound settlement, Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, and by British naval captain George Vancouver, during the Nootka Crisis. Bodega y Quadra's name was eventually dropped from the name. It is one of several North American locations named after George Vancouver, who explored the Pacific Northwest coast between 1791 and 1794.
Vancouver Island is the world's 43rd largest island, Canada's 11th largest island, and Canada's second most populous island after the Island of Montreal. It is the largest Pacific island anywhere east of New Zealand.

SUMMARY
=======
The Gulf Islands are the islands in the Strait of Georgia (also known as the Salish Sea or the Gulf of Georgia), between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia, Canada.
According to BC Geographical Names (BCGNIS) the name Gulf Islands was originally intended and commonly understood to refer to the archipelago at the southern end of the Strait of Georgia—from Gabriola Island in the north to Saturna Island in the southeast and D'Arcy Island in the southwest. During the 1990s, however, the name began to be applied to all the islands in the Strait of Georgia, resulting in the introduction of the term Southern Gulf Islands, which BCGNIS calls a misnomer, to distinguish the original Gulf Islands from the rest, which are sometimes called the Northern Gulf Islands. BCGNIS further notes that Quadra Island is increasingly described as the northernmost of the Gulf Islands.The division of the Gulf Islands into two groups, the Southern and Northern Gulf Islands, is relatively common. The dividing line is approximately that formed by the city of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, and the mouth of the Fraser River on the mainland. The larger populated islands are served by BC Ferries, which operates various vehicle and passenger ferries between the Gulf Islands and to terminals near the major cities of Nanaimo and Victoria on Vancouver Island as well as Vancouver on the mainland. BC Ferries distinguishes between the Southern Gulf Islands and the Northern Gulf Islands. Their Northern Gulf Islands includes both Quadra Island and Cortes Island, as well as some islands far to the north, such as Malcolm Island and Cormorant Island. Natural Resources Canada maps the Gulf Islands as including the Southern Gulf Islands, the islands of Howe Sound (such as Bowen Island, Gambier Island, and Keats Island), along with Lasqueti Island, Hornby Island, and Denman Island.
