Driving Community Engagement and Research: a vision for Watling Street
“Watling Street is a road of witches and ghosts, of queens and highwaymen, of history and myth….. The myriad people who use this road every day might think it unremarkable, but it hides its secrets in plain sight. Watling Street is not just the story of a route across our island, but a journey into our past to discover what it means to be British in the 21st century… It is a palimpsest that is always being rewritten.”
John Higgs 2017, ‘Watling Street’
Watling Street cuts through the heart of England, linking Chester to the south coast via Wroxeter, Wall, Milton Keynes, London and Canterbury. The approach used for Hadrian’s Wall, exemplified by the Hadrian’s Cavalry exhibition, highlights the potential of linking historic sites. Watling Street is not a world heritage site; often we forget that it is there. But is passes through areas of dense and varied population, through countryside and town, wealth and deprivation. There are museums and historic sites along the route, and local groups who are already actively engaging with their own local history. How might we link all these together? The paper will invite discussion on what might be achieved and how.

The REAL Harry Potter
This is the story of the real life Harry Potter.
A British soldier, buried in the British Military Cemetery in the city of Ramla (Ramleh) in Israel.
The letter Harry Potter wrote to his family, which they’d received one day before they got the news that Harry had died:
Dear Mother,
In answer to your letter, I am getting on alright. I expect to be home for Christmas. If I am not it is a bit of bad luck.
At present I am in a place we call The Pumpet. We have not got a lot of work to do at present and I hope you are alright. I hope dad is still in work. Tell Ken (his six year old brother) I am not forgetting his bike. I hope Alice (his older sister) is alright.
We have been going swimming a lot lately. You perhaps have been reading the papers.
I am not boasting but listen to the news on the wireless and listen to what work we in the Worcestershires have been doing. Well, I think that is all for now.
Cheerio Crash Harry.”
The real life Harry Potter was born on 16th of September 1920 in Kidderminster, England. At the age of 16 Harry Potter enlisted to the Worcestershire Regiment of the British Military. A year later Harry Potter was sent to Mandatory Palestine (Israel), together with the rest of his unit, to deal with a violent revolt the Arab community had initiated against the British Mandate.
Harry Potter’s tale was largely influenced by his father, a 1st World War veteran, who was injured and carried a scar at a very symbolic place.
Recently a mobile game called Harry Potter Wizards Unite was released. The game relives the wizarding world and the Harry Potter world vividly, and bringing them to real life in the palm of the player hands. Some refer to it as Harry Potter Go, for it’s similarities to Pokemon Go.
Out of respect t the fallen, this video doesn’t contain any reference to Harry Potter Wizards Unite, nor to Harry Potter easter eggs, nor to Harry Potter facts. But I hope that it enriches different part in the viewers, as deeply as the books and wizarding world of Harry Potter do to their readers/
