Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft presents: The Big Steam Print 2016!
The Big Steam Print is an exciting community art project organized by Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft which saw participants produce their biggest ever prints using a 12.5 tonne vintage steamroller as a giant printing press. Following a successful fundraising campaign via Art Happens, which saw 271 donors raise £13,500 in just 33 days, the museum took the steamroller on an ambitious printing tour from its base at Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre in West Sussex and culminated in June at Ditchling Village Fair.
This roundup film was produced by BYOC Films to document the Big Steam Print steamroller's tour, printing art works to be displayed at the newly opened Big Steam Print Exhibition! The Exhibition is a free entry show of selected works from the steamroller events which are also available for sale, and will be on display from 6 – 21 August 2016 at Phoenix Brighton, 10-14 Waterloo Place, Brighton, East Sussex BN2 9NB. Opening hours are Wednesday – Sunday, 11am – 5pm.

Anna Bera: Artist in Residence
To coincide with the exhibition 'New Truth to Materials: Wood' in October 2017, Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft played host to British Council international artist in residence Anna Bera in partnership with the Polish Cultural Institute. Bera’s work draws inspiration from research on the human relationship with nature in a biological, cultural and spiritual context. As part of her research during the residency, she explored the practices of local craftspeople and examined their attitudes to woodworking and wood itself, as well as exploring the South Downs National Park to search for inspiring artefacts and creating a kind of wood laboratory.
The resulting project entitled 'Decay' included a final piece of work 'Font', made from cedar and oak burr.

Belonging Bandstand with Morag Myerscough
Morag Myerscough’s Belonging Bandstand toured around Sussex throughout the summer 2018. Co-commissioned by Brighton Festival and Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, Belonging celebrated the spirit of seminal 1960s Los Angeles artist Corita Kent whose work brought together a belief in the strength of creativity, togetherness, love and social justice.
It was Myerscough’s first-ever mobile installation: a bright, bold, touring bandstand programmed in conjunction with communities across Sussex.
Initially Myerscough ran workshops based on assignments taken from Corita’s inspirational book Learning from the Heart (a blueprint for creative exploration and community empowerment, published posthumously in 1992), to produce creative visual responses to the theme of ‘belonging’. Each group then worked with Morag to create a series of placards that adorned the crown of the specially-commissioned bandstand. Fully portable, the structure was hard to miss as it travelled on a countywide tour of festivals and community events, programmed for the enjoyment of local residents and visitors.
Launched on the beach level next to the i360 as part of Brighton Festival, the Belonging Bandstand then toured to Your Place venues in Brighton and on to the South of England Show at Ardingly, Crawley Festival, Newhaven, Ditchling and Coastal Currents Arts Festival in Hastings, taking on a different local character with each new iteration as the placard formation of the crown changed to show off the communities’ own designs, and as the bandstand was programmed with local performers.
