Mexico Adventures: Diving Puerto Morelos Wreck (C56 Minesweeper)
This was our first ever wreck dive and our deepest dive yet (at 30m)! Its shot at the C56 Minesweeper Wreck just out of Puerto Morelos. The C-56 was a WW2 U.S. Navy minesweeper, which was donated to the Mexican Navy. The Mexican Navy sunk it in 2000 to make an artificial reef for divers. We filmed it using a Go Pro Hero 3+ Black Edition, this was one of our first times using it, so sorry for the shakiness.
We did our diving through Diverspoint and they were Great. Good communication, gear, knowledge and SAFETY!

Scuba Diving the C-56 Wreck 'Juan Escutia', Puerto Morelos, Mexico 21/08/13
This was the first time Beth and I dived the C-56 wreck in Puerto Morelos. I wasn't able to use most of the video that I shot. Either the camera was shaking too much when we were trying our best to swim against the strong current or from insufficient light when we entered the cabins.
Scuba diving with Nurse Sharks at Cazones Reef, Puerto Morelos, Mexico - Extended footage
Edited video of Dive Two on the 29th August 2013 at Cazones Reef off the coast of Puerto Morelos, Mexico.
Includes footage of the two Nurse Sharks we encountered during the dive plus myself, wearing yellow fins, and other members of the dive.
Scuba diving on the C-56 Wreck 'Juan Escutia', Puerto Morelos, Mexico 29/08/13
Video of the second time I dived on the C-56 wreck in Puerto Morelos.
We started off by doing a free descent in open water down to 25m where we entered the stern. There were three manta rays swimming past, one of which you might just be able to see. I couldn't descend quick enough to capture all three together.
We entered a hatch at the stern and descended down into the hull. I didn't have a video light so you'll just have to take my word when I say we moved through all of the hull, passing the engine room, before ascending up a shaft into the cabins.
The video starts again with us leaving the cabins.
Later in the video you can see one of the manta rays swimming past again.
The lowest point I reached was at 29m, right on the bottom of the bow where the sand dips down a little.
Wreck Scuba Diving on the C-56 mine sweeper in Puerto Morelos, Riviera Maya, Mexico
A few minutes boat ride away lies one of the most interesting wrecks of the Riviera Maya, the former mine sweeper C-56 Juan Escutia.
In 1943 the C-56 Juan Escutia was launched in Lorain, Ohio – that time named USS Knave (AM-256). The USS Knave served as a US Navy mine sweeper in World War II. After a short time she was decommissioned and placed into reserve after the war.
In 1955 the USS Knave was classified as MSF-256, later, in 1966 she was sold to the Mexican Marine and renamed to ARM DM-13. Finally in 1996 she was renamed again as Cadete Juan Escutia (C-56) before being sunk just off Puerto Morelos.
Filmed by Oleg Kaplun, using GoPro Hero 2 in 1080p. I'm also using backscatter red filter, and 2 Light and Motion Sola 2000 lights.
