Our Mission is to give a voice through video to those Dive Centers and Non-Profit Organizations that are on the front line in this battle to save our Oceans and marine life. In this video, we head to Cartagena, Colombia to meet with Diving Planet to hear their story of ocean and marine life conservation efforts over the last 15 years.
We also did an amazing dive and saw amazing coral life and dolphins! On our last day we wanted to see the darker side of Cartagena and search for any ocean plastics and pollution.

One of the main activities on the Colombian island of San Andrés is scuba diving. The location of San Andrés in the Caribbean Sea brings a lot of sea life, crystal clear warm water and coral reefs. The island is known for its several keys and coral reefs that are the homes of a great variety of underwater fauna and flora. Some locations can be crowded in the high season since this is one of the reason tourist go to San Andrés. The dive sites included in this video are: El Barco Hundido, El Faro and Las Cuevas. All three of them being easy shore dives on the west side of San Andrés and not deeper than15 meters.
The waters around San Andrés are easy to dive for every level of scuba diver. The sea can be a little bit more rough during the wet season because winds and storms can pump up the waves, but the dive centers at San Andrés also know where the water is calm during the wet season. Are you visiting San Andrés only with the aim for scuba diving then you should not skip the neighbouring islands Providencia and Santa Catalina. These islands offer great diving facilities and reefs also and a stunnung marine-life in the sea around the whole archipelago, so you can also take your snorkel gear and explore the great blue.
The waters in the San Andrés and Providencia archipelago belong to the third largest coral reef in the world, and is considered a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. It also offers one of the best beaches in the Caribbean due to its sea of seven colors. Here you will be able to dive in caves, walls, cliffs and shipwrecks, and the possibility to enjoy typical reef lufe, like butterfly fish, parrot fish, snapper, grouper, in some places barracudas, and occasionally dolphins and sharks.

The most dramatic dive sites are found on the southeast side of the island. There, the reef plateau extends a few hundred yards from shore, at 6-9m deep. The plateau ends abruptly with a vertical wall, that drops hundreds of meters. Because of its exposure to the wind, currents are frequent, visibility can be reduced, and the trips to and from the dive site can be challenging.
On the northeast side there is a region of very shallow water which is protected from the onslaught of the open ocean by a barrier reef. Within the protected zone there are a wide expanse of seagrass beds and some isolated coral formations. However the majority of the diving is done on the calm West side, where the bottom profile is similar along most of the coast.
The reefs are in fantastic shape, a lot of living coral in great condition. Sites near the dropoff such as West Point and Wildlife are beautiful examples of healthy coral communities. Also in this west side there is an area called the flat Transition Zone, full with macro life: frogfishes, pipehorse, spotfin gobies, shorttail snake eels, etc. San Andrés island can offer you amazing warm water the whole year, great visibility and a stunning display of sea life, and there is dive sites for all levels, just check with your dive center which places you can go according to your experience.
Throughout the year you can enjoy good weather in San Andrés, with some sporadic storms. San Andres has strong winds comming from the east, therefore diving is done on the west side of the island. The wind speed changes during the year, being the strongest during the months of June and July, and September and October the most calm months. It has a rainy season between January and June. Water temperature ranges from 27ºC to 30°C, making it a perfect place to practice water sports.

Scuba diving in Cartagena´s Islas del Rosario (Colombia)
Here some diving impressions from an excursion to the Islas de Rosario, a one hour boat ride away from Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
We dived with Diving Planet one of the two larger dive shops in Cartagena.
Filmed with a GoPro Hero (round lens, hence the slightly blurry underwater pictures). The day was overcast, so underwater colours are not ideal.

Coral Reefs Inspire Disabled Scuba Diver Kids
The video was made at CIREC Centro Integral de Rehabilitacion Integral beside the swimming pool where the six disabled kids learned to dive in March of 2008 in order to go to visit the coral reefs of the National Natural Park Corales del Rosario, Cartagena, Colombia. For all of them was a very interesting and therapeutic underwater experience. Feeling the ingravity environment suddenly they did not need to make huge efforts to walk with prosthesis or wheelchairs. They also give to other sport divers a lesson of environmental education about the need to protect coral reefs and monitor the state of health of the reefs.
