Exploring the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Newark, CA!
In the heart of California's high-tech industry lies a 30,000-acre oasis for millions of migratory birds and endangered species. The nation's first urban national wildlife refuge sits on the southern end of San Francisco Bay. The refuge, created in 1974, was largely the result of grassroots efforts by the local community to protect the San Francisco Bay ecosystem.
Major changes occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area following the California gold rush in 1849, creating a population boom explosive growth and development on sensitive lands surrounding the bay. The newly introduced salt industry, for example, converted tens of thousands of acres of salt marsh into commercial salt ponds. Conversion of wetlands to support development continued well into the 20th century, and today, nearly 85% of the bay's original marshes and shorelines have been altered.
Congressman Don Edwards, responding to local citizens who made up the South San Francisco Baylands Planning, Conservation and National Wildlife Refuge Committee, worked with Congress to create the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This group later became the Citizens Committee to Complete the Refuge and in 1988 helped add additional 20,000 acres, doubling the size of the refuge. The Citizens Committee to Complete the Refuge along with other Bay Area organizations work tirelessly to protect and enhance the Bay's remaining wetlands.
The refuge was later renamed to Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in 1995 to honor Congressman Edwards' dedication to the refuge and its mission, which is to preserve and enhance wildlife habitat; protect migratory birds and threatened and endangered species; and provide opportunities for wildlife-oriented recreation and nature study for the surrounding communities.

Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge
The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge lies in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley — a 30,000-acre oasis for millions of migratory birds and endangered species. Neighboring Google and Facebook, the stunning wetlands and waterways of the refuge provide a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the booming tech industry, and allow residents of the surrounding communities to fish, hike, explore, and view wildlife. The refuge is currently spearheading a major wetlands restoration project and groundbreaking programs to mitigate rising water levels and flood risk due to climate change. In addition, a local Habitat Heroes program brings refuge staff together with teens in the community to foster environmental awareness and groom future environmental stewards.

Salt ponds at Bedwell Bayfront Park, Menlo Park, California
Many people who fly over San Francisco Bay area enjoy the view of colorful salt ponds – flat rectangular areas filled with vivid green, orange or pink-colored brine. Dazzling white means the salt is dry and ready to be harvested. We are going to have a closer look by visiting Bedwell Bayfront park just a mile or so away from Facebook headquarters. You can take highway 101 and exit east on Marsh Road.
Once a month on one Friday, City of Menlo Park provides free compost for garden needs. The park has 160 acres and plenty of trails for hikers, runners and bicyclists. Kite lovers can catch a wind on the hills but if you want to see salt – come at the end of the summer or early fall. Otherwise, we risk to stuck in the mud up to your knee or even higher and will need a rescue team to get you out. Dangerous and not recommended.
Nevertheless, some of the ponds without access to fresh water will eventually dry and the bottom will be covered with a thin crust of sea salt. This is when a pair of sunglasses would help, especially on a sunny day.
It seems like a lifeless environment but not exactly. In addition to scattered bird bones we immediately spotted brine flies gliding on the water surface. They feed on algae growing in salty waters.
It is believed that the change in the color of salt ponds depends on pigments that are present in marine algae of various species, which prevail at certain salinity. For instance, green color comes from green single cell algae Dunaliella salina (Дуна-ли-елла салина) that prefers medium level of salinity. Once more water evaporates and salt content increases green algae can’t survive and but salt-loving Halobacteria thrive giving the waters pink and orange colors.
Despite this theory is commonly accepted, we believe that this is kind of incomplete. The phenomenon similar to what happens to the trees in the autumn may be at play here as well. The green pigments in dying algae get destroyed by sun faster than red or yellow ones leading to change in colors not related to the succession of species. In addition, high salinity and strong sun light put a stress on the photosynthetic apparatus, which usually responds by synthesizing more xanthophylls, pigments of red and yellow colors.
Overall, Bedwell Bayfront park is a nice place to visit for an hour or two, especially if you leave nearby. The level of radiation is within norm.
By the way, the park’s ponds are full of migrating birds winter time or early spring.

Welcome Signs
Welcome signs surrounding a city can be important markers signifying much more than its population or city seal. The Northern California city of Newark decided to affirm its dedication to fostering acceptance and inclusion by unveiling a city plaque and banners with this message. Five years earlier, Newark was home to the brutal murder of transgender teen Gwen Araujo. Since the tragic death, the city has been engaged in ongoing prevention work with the school district and community groups, like PFLAG and Not In Newark. Newark saw the sign campaign, through the National League of Cities Inclusive Communities Partnership, as the next logical step in its efforts to build a more inclusive community.

Bay Area Treasure | The Volanti Duck Club
Link to listing page:
Founded in 1892, the Volanti Duck Club has charmed many a hunter for more than a century. Consisting of 511 acres the property sits in the heart of the west side of the Suisun Marsh and is a short drive from Suisun City. The west side has a reputation for having the best waterfowl hunting in the entire marsh. In addition to the great hunting, the Volanti has convenient access from the entire Bay Area and the Sacramento Valley. The club is primarily shallow open water, which traditionally holds large numbers of mallards, sprig, teal, and widgeon. The property parallels the State Fish and Wildlife Joice Island Game Refuge. As with most clubs in the Marsh, access to hunting blinds is provided by boats which travel down boat ditches that directly take the hunters to the duck blinds. The shooting areas contain twenty-one double blinds and one platform blind. The clubhouse is clean and in good condition and encompasses a nice living area and game room with panoramic views of the marsh. The kitchen comes completely furnished and fully equipped for large group entertaining. There are eleven private bungalows and each is comfortable in size with four having their own private boat dock. Other structures include caretakers mobile home, a garage/shop, picking shed and decoy shed. The club has good levees and water control systems. Equipment; includes 3 pieces of marsh equipment; rubber tired bucket loader/mower, 5 yard swamp dump truck and a Komatsu D31P with backhoe attachment are included. When waterfowl limits are filled there is excellent striper & sturgeon fishing from the boat dock and fishing pier on Suisun Slough, lots of pigs on property, pheasant and dove hunting. The Volanti is truly a wonderful year round recreational retreat and provides the perfect opportunity for the next group of outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy for years to come.
San Francisco Bay Area
The San Francisco Bay Area, commonly known as the Bay Area, is a populated region that surrounds the San Francisco and San Pablo estuaries in Northern California, United States. The region encompasses the major cities and metropolitan areas of San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose, along with smaller urban and rural areas. The Bay Area's nine counties are Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Home to approximately 7.44 million people, the nine-county Bay Area contains many cities, towns, airports, and associated regional, state, and national parks, connected by a network of roads, highways, railroads, bridges, tunnels and commuter rail. The combined urban area of the region is the second-largest in California (after the Greater Los Angeles area), the fifth-largest in the United States, and the 56th-largest urban area in the world.
The United States Office of Management and Budget (OMB) does not use the nine-county definition of the San Francisco Bay Area. The OMB has designated a more extensive 12-county Combined Statistical Area (CSA) titled the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA Combined Statistical Area which also includes the three counties of San Joaquin, Santa Cruz, and San Benito that do not border San Francisco Bay, but are economically tied to the nine counties that do.
