One of the most affecting and complex stories of the Royal Pavilion Estate is its use as a military hospital for wounded Indian soldiers in World War I. As we work towards reunifying the Royal Pavilion Estate to bring collections, heritage and the arts together to create compelling new work for the Estate, the opportunity was ripe for Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove and ourselves to work with British Asian performance company Nutkhut and with 14-18 NOW to commemorate this special chapter in Brighton’s history.

Between 1 December 1914 and 15 February 1916 over 4,000 wounded Indian soldiers who fought with the allies during World War One were nursed back to health at the make-shift hospitals set up inside the buildings of the Royal Pavilion estate. The India Gate, completed in 1921 and visible on the south side of the Pavilion Gardens, was a gift from the people of India, erected to commemorate their fallen soldiers
Brighton Pavilion Dr Blighty light show May 2016
This was utterly amazing. I saw the beginning of the show on the first night and loved the spontaneous response it prompted in everyone around us. People were ditching their bus ride home, jumping over railings to get a closer look and swearing in astonishment. It was commissioned as part of the Dr Blighty series of events for the Brighton Festival 2016. This was the highlight of this year's festival.

Dr Blighty projections at Brighton Festival
This May, over 50,000 people experienced Dr Blighty at Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Gardens. The projections spread far and wide on social media too, and were seen by over a million people online.
Created by award-winning arts company Nutkhut for Brighton Festival, which celebrated its 50th festival this year, Dr Blighty threw a spotlight on the Indians who travelled across the world to fight for the Allies during the First World War. More than one million men travelled from India to fight in the Great War, and the collective experiences of these volunteer forces constitute one of the great untold stories in military history. The event successfully brought to life the experiences of the injured Indian soldiers sent to recuperate in Brighton and the locals who came to know and care for them.
