VIETNAM VETERANS DAY CEREMONY AT UTAH STATE CAPITOL
Utah Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) with Utah Office of Veterans and Military Affairs hosted a Vietnam Veterans Day Ceremony March 29 at the State Capitol Rotunda. Vietnam Veterans Day in Utah was passed by legislative action March 29, 2014, to coincide with the final day combat units served in the Vietnam War. The last combat unit left Vietnam March 29, 1973.
The 10 a.m. ceremony included music, speakers and the distribution of the book “A Time To Honor” and the accompanying DVD “Long Journey Home.” The Book and DVD are being distributed at no cost to each of the 47,000 Vietnam Veterans living in Utah. “We remind all our veterans of the Vietnam Era that they did not have to serve with ‘boots on the ground’ in South East Asia to be considered a Vietnam Veteran,” reports Dennis Howland, Utah State President, Vietnam Veterans of America. “Although 2.7 million of us served ‘in country’, we didn’t fight the war alone. An additional 6 million supported our efforts and are considered our brothers and sisters of the Vietnam War.” Family members of Vietnam Veterans, Gold Star Families, all veterans and the public are all encouraged to attend.
Following the Rotunda activities, everyone is invited to proceed to a memorial ceremony at the monument on the West lawn of the State Capitol grounds. Vietnam Veterans placed a wreath to remember and honor the 58,479 young men and women lost to the Vietnam War which includes Utah’s 366 killed; and the more than 1600 still unaccounted for and listed as Missing In Action. A part of the wreath ceremony was a special song for those lost to war performed by the Red Spirit Singers from Ft. Duchesne Reservation.
