BBC News Glasgows Duke of Wellington statue to keep cone
Plans to end a long-standing tradition of placing a traffic cone on Glasgow's iconic Duke of Wellington statue have been dropped after a public backlash.
Glasgow City Council wanted to raise the statue's plinth as part of a £65,000 project to refurbish the monument which stands outside the Gallery of Modern Art.

Glasgow's Duke of Wellington statue swaps traffic cone for EU hat on Brexit day
A statue in Glasgow famous for having a traffic cone placed on top of it has had its unusual attire decorated with an EU flag on Brexit day. The Duke of Wellington statue sported the special blue cone with yellow stars hours before Britain officially leaves the European Union on Friday. Members of the public stopped to view the decoration on the Duke - located outside the Gallery of Modern Art in the city's Royal Exchange Square - and take pictures. The statue of the former prime minister has for years been targeted by students and revellers who put an orange traffic cone on his head, and it has become part of the city's landscape. Plans in 2013 to raise the statue to stop cones being placed on its head were withdrawn after a public outcry. Glasgow voted by 66.6 per cent to remain in the 2016 referendum. Pro-EU campaigners will gather at the Donald Dewar statue on Buchanan Street at 10.30pm on Friday as part of a series of events marking the day called Leave the Light On. Meanwhile, a pro-Brexit party is planned for nearby George Square on Friday night. The 'Great British Brexit Celebration Meet-up' event also starts at 10.30pm and is being organised by former UKIP member and Holocaust denier Alistair McConnachie.
