Dulwich Picture Gallery is an art gallery in Dulwich, South London. The gallery, designed by Regency architect Sir John Soane using an innovative and influential method of illumination, opened to the public in 1817.
Dulwich Picture Gallery is the oldest public art gallery in England and was made an independent charitable trust in 1994. Until this time the gallery was part of Alleyn's College of God's Gift, a charitable foundation established by the actor, entrepreneur and philanthropist Edward Alleyn in the early-17th century.
The acquisition of artworks by its founders and bequests from its many patrons resulted in Dulwich Picture Gallery housing one of the country's finest collections of Old Masters, especially rich in French, Italian and Spanish Baroque paintings and in British portraits from Tudor times to the 19th century.
Dulwich Picture Gallery's design and architecture comprising a series of interlinked rooms lit by natural light through overhead skylights has been the primary influence on art gallery design ever since. Soane designed the sky lights to illuminate the paintings indirectly. Soane's design is particularly significant in art gallery construction because of it is unrelated to traditional architectural practices or schools of architecture. Instead of constructing a facade with the stucco porticos favoured by many contemporary architects, he opted to use uninterrupted raw brick, a feature that has subsequently been adopted by many 20th-century art galleries. The architect Philip Johnson [1906–2005] said of the space Soane has taught us how to display paintings. Dulwich Picture Gallery is known for its innovative education programme, particularly its community outreach programmes including Urban Youth and Good Times: Art for Older People.

This beautiful little building designed by Sir John Soane in 1811 can lay claim to being the first purpose-built gallery in the UK. It's origins are fascinating: founded by two art dealers active in Georgian London, it is the final resting place of a collection originally intended to provide Poland with a National Gallery equivalent. JOHN INGAMELLS Book Number: 72512 Product format: Hardback
The first of three volumes to be published which comprehensively catalogues the contents of the oldest public gallery in Britain, founded in 1811, this book, based on meticulous scholarship, focuses on the British pictures in the collection and offers a host of fascinating insights into its history and its formation. Deciding what makes a picture British has not always been easy and, for instance, works painted in England by Van Dyck and Canaletto have been included. The origins of the collection date back a further 200 years to the foundation of Dulwich College by Edward Alleyn, the celebrated Elizabethan actor and theatrical entrepreneur. Alleyn's own somewhat primitive collection was housed in the College, along with a rather more discerning assortment of paintings bequeathed by another actor, William Cartwright. The bequest in 1811 of a treasure trove of paintings by, among others, Poussin, Rembrandt and Rubens, transformed the gallery into a major public collection, and it was given a purpose-built new building designed by Sir John Soane. In 1835, the gap left by the prejudices of the founders towards foreign paintings was spectacularly filled. The Linley bequest contributed several major canvases by Gainsborough, shifting the focus of the collection towards the previously neglected area of British art - a process further consolidated by many gifts and bequests, most notably that of Charles Fairfax Murray who, in 1911, donated over 50 spectacular paintings, mostly British. Here are a beautiful early Gainsborough An Unknown Couple in a Landscape, two Hogarths, Hudsons, Lucy Ebberton by George Knapton, a Kneller, a great Lely and many more. A volume to treasure. 287 pages 29cm x 22cm in colour and b/w with list of abbreviations, biographical index of artists, changes of attribution since 1998, previous owners and sales, numerical index and concordance.
