The Educating Community - Rio de Janeiro Program - CARE Brasil
Based on UNESCOs concept of Educating Cities, CARE Brasil and the Guadalajara State School in the municipality of Duque de Caxias (Greater Rio de Janeiro City) have developed the The Educating Community project. Its goal is to bring together schools, daycare centers and community associations in coordinated and integrated activities that promote the common good through the principal strategy of promoting youth leadership, responsibility and volunteerism within the community. The idea is to have a community that educates its children and adolescents, who in turn are responsible for the development and future of their own neighborhoods, in this case Olavo Bilac, Jardim Leal and Gramacho. The project involves three main lines of action: Promoting Reading, Environmental Education and Researching Local History, and to date has involved over 6,000 children, adolescents and youth residents in the municipality.

Brazil: Clashes on Olympic torch route as police tear gas, pepper spray protesters
Brazilian riot police used tear gas and pepper spray against hundreds of protesters who were marching along the Olympic torch relay route in Duque de Caxias, north of Rio de Janeiro, Wednesday.
The protest, which was against the salary delays of public sector workers in the state of Rio, took place along the path of the Olympic torch relay. Footage of the clashes shows protesters being hit by tear gas and shrapnel fired from police vehicles that drove by.
The path of the torch relay has been littered with several demonstrations in the past few weeks, some of which involved attempts to extinguish the Olympic torch with water buckets.

Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro Brazil
The Beach
The view to the left of Copacabana beach is the towering mountain of Sugar Loaf and Fort Duque de Caxias built in 1779. On the right is Copacabana Fort, which dates back to 1914. It houses the Army Historical Museum. The beach runs for 2.2 miles (4 km) in an east west direction running from Postos Dois to Posto Seis. Stop by one of the several beach bars and enjoy a gold cup of chopp (draft beer) and refeicao (herbed meat and fried onions). Take a walk along the beach to enjoy some of the most incredible sand sculptures and when you get thirsty try some of the agua de coco or coconut water straight from the coconut.
Sports on the Beach
The locals or Cariocas really enjoy their sports. As a result, the government has provided many sports facilities along the beach. Volleyball nets are strung along the shores. There are also football courts. Cariocas also like to stay in shape, there are several places on the beach with training equipment where locals can pump iron and build muscles.
Around the Beach
Running for 2.2 miles (4km) parallel to the beach is the promenade. Completion of the project was in 1970. Designed by Roberto Burle Marx it is made of a black and white wave design. It is a popular route for cycles, joggers, and roller-skaters. Across the street from the promenade are some first class hotels including the 5 star Copacabana Palace Hotel, Sofitel, JW Marriott, and the more affordable Tulip Inn. There are several excellent Brazilian restaurants in the area. Try Siri Mole (Seafood), Carretão (Churrascaria) or Amir (Arabic food). Try also Rondinela or Taberna on Av. Atlantica for some real local cooking. Order peixe frito na brasa, a fried fish plate or aipim com carne seca which is dry meat with a fried root called manioc.

Carioca Tips
Enjoy the Sunday at Avenida Atlantica, half closed to cars. From Friday to Sunday there is a touristic fair in front of Rio Othon Hotel that starts at 6pm. There you can find great souvenirs and artwork. Have breakfast at Confeitaria Colombo at Copacabana Fort, one of the best places to eat in the shine mornings in Rio de Janeiro.
Southeastern Brazil struggles with drought
(21 Nov 2015) The entire southeastern region of Brazil is suffering under a severe drought that some experts attribute to climate change.
More frequent rains this year have helped slightly improve water levels at some reservoirs, but many areas are still short of water.
The southeastern region of Brazil includes Rio de Janeiro state and the city of Rio.
It is the region's worst drought in eight decades and reservoirs have been at critically low levels.
This is causing water distribution problems and daily difficulties for residents such as Marilda Rodrigues Cavalo who lives in the Duque de Caxias municipality in Rio state.
Cavalo lives in a house with her two daughters and her granddaughter.
She used to get water supplied to her house at least three times a week but now it's down to once a week or none at all.
Now she uses a well to extract water from the ground, which the family treats with sterilising chemicals before using it to wash the dishes or clean the house.
Aside from building wells, people are also buying water from water tank trucks, but it is very expensive.
Marussia Whately, the coordinator for non-governmental organization Alliance for Water said residents are feeling the pinch in the water supply because the National Waters Agency is enforcing restrictions in the distribution of water from a water treatment plant on Guandu River in Rio de Janeiro.
There is still no water rationing in place in Rio de Janeiro itself.
Climate change and economy expert Sergio Margulis said the government needs to take more action because climate change is already hitting very hard.
Some private companies are implementing their own measures to deal with the lack of rainfall.
The Santa Cruz Industries Association in the city of Santa Cruz takes water from the Sao Francisco channel, which receives water from Guandu River.
Abilio Faia, the head of sustainability at the Association said that low water levels have made it necessary to build a barrier to avoid the sea water flowing in, so that companies can draw fresh water.
The drought is also affecting Sao Paulo state and the country's biggest city, Sao Paulo.

Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, South America
Copacabana is a bairro located in the Zona Sul of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is known for its 4 km balneario beach, which is one of the most famous in the world. The district was originally called Sacopenapã until the mid-18th century. It was renamed after the construction of a chapel holding a replica of the Virgen de Copacabana, the patron saint of Bolivia. Copacabana begins at Princesa Isabel Avenue and ends at Posto Seis (lifeguard watchtower Six). Beyond Copacabana, there are two small beaches: one, inside Fort Copacabana and other, right after it: Diabo (Devil) Beach. Arpoador beach, where surfers used to go after its perfect waves, comes in the sequence, followed by the famous borough of Ipanema. The area will be one of the four Olympic Zones during the 2016 Summer Olympics. According to Riotur, the Tourism Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro, there are 63 hotels and 10 hostels in Copacabana. Copacabana beach stretches from Posto Dois (lifeguard watchtower Two) to Posto Seis (lifeguard watchtower Six). Leme is at Posto Um (lifeguard watchtower One). There are historic forts at both ends of Copacabana beach; Fort Copacabana, built in 1914, is at the south end by Posto Seis and Fort Duque de Caxias, built in 1779, at the north end. One curiosity is that the lifeguard watchtower of Posto Seis never existed. Hotels, restaurants, bars, night clubs and residential buildings dot the promenade. Copacabana Beach plays host to millions of revellers during the annual New Year's Eve celebrations and, in most years, has been the official venue of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. This beach is also the venue where Usain Bolt will attempt to beat the 150m world record. American football was introduced in Brazil through a game played at this beach. The Copacabana promenade is a pavement landscape in large scale (4 kilometres long). It was completed in 1970 and has used a black and white Portuguese pavement design since its origin in the 1930s: a geometric wave. The Copacabana promenade was designed by Roberto Burle Marx. Copacabana has the 11th highest Human Development Index in Rio, the 2000 census put the HDI of Copacabana at 0.902. According to the IBGE, 160,000 people live in Copacabana and 44,000 or 27.5% of them are 60 years old or older. Copacabana covers an area of 7.84 km² which gives the borough a population density of 20,400 people per km². Residential buildings eleven to thirteen stories high built right next to each other dominate the borough. Houses and two-story buildings are rare. More than 40 different bus routes serve Copacabana, as do three subway Metro stations: Cantagalo, Siqueira Campos and Cardeal Arcoverde. Three major arteries parallel to each other cut across the entire borough: Atlantic Avenue, which is a 6 lane 4 km avenue by the beachside, Nossa Senhora de Copacabana Avenue and Barata Ribeiro/Raul Pompéia Street both of which are 4 lanes and 3.5 km in length. Barata Ribeiro Street changes its name to Raul Pompéia Street after the Sá Freire Alvim Tunnel. Twenty-four streets intersect all three major arteries, and seven other streets intersect some of the three, but not all.

CARNIVAL PREPARATIONS
Last minute preparations were being made on Monday (16FEB09) for Brazil's Carnival which will be held in Rio de Janeiro on 22 February.
Thousands of workers from low-income neighbourhoods are hired every year, including stage hands and seamstresses, to help create the colourful costumes.
In the City of Samba, about 350 workers have been hired to create the floats and costumes, which will be on display during the parades of Rio de Janeiro's 12 competing samba schools.
In the workshop of Grande Rio samba school, final preparations are in place for the school's 80-minute parade, which will take place on Sunday night.
The school's creative director, Cahe Rodrigues, who is in charge of creating the theme and administering the workshop, said there is a real sense of family among all the people involved in the carnival parade.
Carnival is celebrated around the world from Europe to Haiti to New Orleans' Mardi Gras and runs until the start of Lent, the period between Ash Wednesday and Easter, observed by Christians as a season of fasting and penitence.
Excess and revelry are a key part of carnival, which culminates with the aptly named Fat Tuesday.

Piabeta Supervia train ride ballast cars, Rio State, Brazil
Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 12:44 PM. Still at the far endpoint of this train's run, Saracuruna, and we're waiting for the train to get ready to take us back. I try to zoom to the engine as it switches back to the track to connect to the other end of the train again, but discover I've accidentally tweaked something on my camera that prevents it from auto-focusing when zooming. So I pan around and show as best I can the only train cars I've seen on this line that aren't passenger cars: ballast cars. I asked around and this line is only used for commuter trains, which makes sense; it's narrow-gauge and light rail and kind of rickety. But they gotta get that ballast out there.

STORYLINE:
Severe floods in greater Rio de Janeiro forced thousands of people out of their homes on Thursday, just one day after a major blackout had left them in the dark.
At least five different districts in the Baixada Fluminense region suffered the consequences from heavy rain storms, which began on Wednesday night.
TV Globo reported three people died overnight in Nova Iguazu, after severe weather caused a house to collapse.
Rio de Janeiro state governor Sergio Cabral said a mobile hospital unit would be installed in the region, which could treat up to 500 people a day.
He also said, according to TV Globo, that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had guaranteed the state would be entitled to any necessary resources.
Raimunda Siqueira, who lives with her daughter in Duque de Caxias, said she was unable to even enter her home due to the floodwaters.
Meanwhile heavy rain and lightning were blamed for causing an hours-long blackout which left Rio de Janeiro state residents and seventeen other states without power.
The massive Itaipu dam on the border with Paraguay - the world's second-largest hydroelectric power producer - was completely shut down for the first time in its 25-year history during the blackout.
Several neighbourhoods in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo have also suffered water shortages since the blackout.
