West Virginia Rails - The Durbin Rocket
Durbin, West Virginia is located some 40 miles south of Elkins, and is home to one of the five different excursions operated by the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad. The Durbin Rocket runs from the station in downtown, across the Greenbrier River and through some of West Virginia's scenic mountains and valleys before making a short pause at a small camp sight, where a refurbished caboose is located. Powering this excursion is one of three remaining, operational, Climax steam locomotives. The 55-ton behemoth was constructed in 1910 for the Moore-Keppel Lumber Co. in nearby Randolph County, WV. These types of locomotives use a gearing system in which the two steam cylinders are attached to a transmission located under the center of the boiler which transmits power to drive shafts running to the front and rear trucks. The 'Climax Manufacturing Company' (later renamed to the 'Climax Locomotive Works' in Corry, Pennsylvania from 1888 to 1928 built all Climax locomotives, of which roughly 1000 and 1100 were built. So sit back and enjoy the sounds of this unique locomotive working its way through some of West Virginia's best sights!

Durbin Rocket: Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Scenic Railroad
We recently took a weekend family trip to visit Pocahontas County, West Virginia. One of the stops was in the small logging town of Durbin, where we boarded the Durbin Rocket. This steam powered locomotive currently travels in the Monongahela National Forest along the Greenbrier River between Durbin and Heavener Station. The out and back ride lasts about 2 hours, including a short lay over at Heavener Station. This is one of the trains of the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad. We arrived on a rainy morning, but fortunately the weather improved as the train pulled out of the station, and we had a great trip. Thanks for watching!

The Durbin Rocket: A Heisler on the Greenbrier
On a cool and rainy October 14, 2018 I concluded my trip to West Virginia with a brief visit to the small town of Durbin, home to the Durbin Rocket. The Rocket runs along the old C&O Greenbrier line along the river of the same name to Heavener Station, about 5 miles from town. Work is currently underway to rebuild the remainder of the Greenbrier line to Cass, which will allow number 6 to return home. Usual motive power for the Rocket was once Moore-Keppel Co. 3, a two-truck Climax locomotive, but as it needed a rebuilt after the 2015 season it was temporarily traded for Cass Scenic Railroad's number 6, a three-truck Heisler. Once 3 and the tracks to Cass are rebuilt, both locomotives will return to their respective homes.
Just a few weeks before my visit the locomotive's Cass-style diamond stack was a replaced with a Radley & Hunter stack reminiscent of its time at the Meadow River Lumber Co., which in my opinion looks great.

It's Day 1 of the NRHS Cumberland Rails 2018 Convention, and we're kicking it off with a bang at the renowned Cass Scenic Railroad, buried deep in the heart of the Appalachians of eastern West Virginia. Departing from Cass at 12:00 sharp, our journey over the Cheat Mountain would begin with Shays #2 and #4 powering the day's train. The duo would put on a spectacular show as we climbed approximately 6.7 miles to Old Spruce, where we would transfer to the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad's Cheat Mountain Salamander for the remainder of the trek to Elkins, arriving shortly before 5:00.
