Kent Monkman began his career as a painter and illustrator, having studied at Sheridan College of Applied Arts in Brampton, Ontario. Today, he works in a range of mediums, including film, video, performance, and installation, as well as painting, sculpture, and drawing. He explores issues of gender, sexuality, racism, colonialism, religion, and power politics—themes that are significant to Indigenous traditions but also universally understood. By way of his alter

C.M. Chip Jones has been a professional sculpture for over thirty years. His work is in private collections all over the world including all fifty states, Canada, Japan, Russia and China. He is an advocate for wild places and has contributed many works to conservation groups such as; The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Foundation for North American Wild Sheep and Trout Unlimited. He owns the BigRock Bronze Works foundry in Frenchtown, Montana, where he creates all of his work.

Kent Monkman Casualties of Modernity
Through a variety of mediums, including painting, film/video, performance, and installation, Kent Monkman explores themes of colonization, sexuality, loss, and resilience — the complexities of historic and contemporary Native American experience. His alter-ego, Miss Chief, appears in his work as an agent provocateur and trickster who upends received notions of history and indigenous people. Monkman has created memorable site specific performances at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, The Royal Ontario Museum, The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, Compton Verney, and most recently at the Denver Art Museum. His award-winning short film and video works have been screened at various national and international festivals, including the 2007 and 2008 Berlinale, and the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival. Monkman has been awarded the Egale Leadership Award, the Indspire Award and the Hnatyshyn Foundation Visual Arts Award.
Co-presented by University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA), with support from Institute for the Humanities, and the Michigan Indian Employment & Training Services.

On February 8, 2018, Stacey Jessiman de Nanteuil presented a scholar lecture at Krannert Art Museum titled, Jewish and Indigenous Looted Treasures: Comparing Legal and Ethical Approaches to Provenance Research and Restitution.
This lecture is presented as part of the KAM exhibition Provenance: A Forensic History of Art, curated by doctoral candidate in Art History at the University of Illinois Nancy Karrels.

Martin Bromirski Shadow Boner
Today's report documents a pop-up exhibition in Bushwick Brooklyn. This group of modestly scaled paintings displays the characteristic formal elements that Bromirski has employed for the last several years. Combining the repeated circular form with a broad spectrum of color and texture, these paintings achieve a classic balance, and harmony, while challenging the strict notion of what a painting can be. Kent Monkman uses brilliant artistic talents and a sharp wit to explore indigenous and anti-colonialist perspectives on Canada's History. Monkman is a Canadian Two-Spirit artist of Cree ancestry who works in painting, film/video, performance, and installation. Monkman has had solo and group exhibitions and performances at numerous prestigious Canadian and international museums, festivals, galleries, and other venues. Monkman's works are exhibited in important collections including the National Gallery of Canada and the Smithsonian's Museum of the American Indian, among others.
