The museum is based in the original 1923 RAF navigation school building and has an extensive range of relics, pictures and information it relies solely on donations and is free to visit. The knowledge of the volunteers is second to none and we would highly recommend this location for yourself with it having seen the first flight by a British pilot in Britain on 2nd May 1909 as well as being the location of the second Short Bros works before they moved their operation to Rochester in 1913. The airfield was in use from 1909-1946 being used by the Royal Aero Club, Royal Naval Air Service and then finally the Royal Air Force.

Eastchurch Memorial - Home Of British Aviation
I have not seen any information about this memorial and as I live in this village with all it's history I felt it should be shared with the world - This is the birthpace of British Aviation with so many events now lost in time... Were you aware that even the Wright brothers visited the Shorts factory here on our island because the Short Brothers built the Wright Flyer under licence here...
We also held the Gordon Bennett Air Race Troiphy here on the Isle of Sheppey...

Today 31st January 2014 was a great day for the volunteers and the Yorkshire Air
Museum as it saw the engines running on two WW1 aeroplanes at Elvington near York. A re-creation of a lightweight Naval Fighter the Port Victoria PV8 Eastchurch Kitten, designed to fly off wooden decks built on the gun turrets of RN ships to shoot down Zeppelins. It's development took a little too long and when ready the Zeppelin menace was over and the navy lost interest. We think the aircraft was packed up and shipped to USA and disappeared. The project was completed in 22 months by Ray Mac McElwain and several other volunteers, and will be appearing in various cities in the UK to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1.
The SE5A had a successful run after a major overhaul.
Both aircraft will be joining 5 other live aircraft on Thunder Days throughout the year at the Museum.

The Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial is an air museum in England on the site of the former RAF Elvington airfield. The Yorkshire Air Museum was founded, and first opened to the public, in the early 1980s.
The Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial is the largest independent air museum in Britain and is the most original Second World War RAF Bomber Command station open to the public. It is also the only Allied Air Forces Memorial in Europe. The museum has a good international reputation and profile with established branches in Canada and France and is supported by over 4,000 registered friends across the world. It is a Corporate Member of Friends of the Few (Battle of Britain Memorial) and the Royal Aeronautical Society.
The President of the Museum/Memorial is Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton and Vice Presidents include; the Chief of the Air Staff, Sir Andrew Pulford; Chief of the French Air Force, General Andre Lanata; Supreme Allied Commander NATO, General Denis Mercier; Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu; and TV Presenter, Jan Leeming.
Yorkshire Air Museum principal activity is in education and the history of flight, through which it is involved with aerospace manufacturers and organisations via its long term Reach for the Sky project which delivered the first KS2 History of Aviation educational resource book to all 26,000 primary schools in UK, supported by RAeS and the Ministry of Transport.
The Yorkshire Air Museum has around 50 aircraft spanning the development of aviation from 1853 up to the latest GR4 Tornado. Several aircraft including Victor, Nimrod, Buccaneer, Sea Devon, SE5a, Eastchurch Kitten; DC3 Dakota; are kept live and operated on special Thunder Days during the year. Over 20 historic vehicles and a Registered Archive containing over 500,000 historic artefacts and documents are also preserved at the Museum, which is also the Official Archive for the National Aircrew Association and National Air Gunners Association. It is nationally registered and accredited through DCMS/Arts Council England and is a registered charity.
A permanent exhibition on RAF Bomber Command was opened at the museum by life member, Sir David Jason. In 2010 a new exhibition called Pioneers of Aviation, and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, was opened featuring the lives and achievements of Sir George Cayley, Sir Barnes Wallis, Robert Blackburn, Nevil Shute and Amy Johnson.

Congratulations to Polly for being one of the handful of pilots to join the ranks of those who can successfully tow behind an aircraft with two elastic bands. Many thanks to Mike Loxton for allowing us to use his airfield and to Carol and the engineering team, for making sure that nothing vital fell off the aircraft at a critical moment.
A fun day out for all and this means we can now tow signs over London again.

The Museum is situated next to a 10,000ft x 400 acre international standard runway which holds the current European Land Speed Record.

Sea Sheppey is an historical drama depicting the last 300 years on the island. The stories of its people rich and poor and the many battles it faced upon its shores. The script was written by bafta award winner Roy Apps from research conducted and compiled by the Big Fish Arts Company. The film was shot and produced by Curious Films and the communities of Sheppey. All the costumes were produced by the members of the cast and crews and all the actors were residents of the island. The film took over 8 months to complete and is shown here on youtube in 3 parts.
