STORY-LINE:
In the midst of the brisk winter, Japanese young and old dressed only in white underwear stood in front of the Shinto shrine, preparing to dowse themselves in icy cold water, as part of a seasonal ritual in Tokyo, on Saturday.
Each person read out a prayer, despite their lips almost turning blue and shivering in the cold.
The Shinto priest, dressed colourful traditional costume, blessed them before the ritual.
With their spirit lifted by the Shinto prayer, they jumped enthusiastically into the water that had a temperature of three degree celsius and vigorously splashed it over their bodies.
The ritual is meant to purify the spirit, and renew yourself in the Shinto religion.
Twenty-four courageous men and women participated in this year's ritual.
The oldest participant was 71 years old and has been through this experience seven times.

Kyoto Event: Boiling Water Ritual at Jōnangū Shrine (Yutate Kagura)
Yutate Shinji, or Boiling Water Rituals, are a common occurrence at Shinto shrines in the winter time, and Jōnangū shrine in southern Kyoto holds their Yutate Kagura ritual on Jan. 20th each year. A ritual for good health and prevention of illness, the Yutate Kagura begins with prayers at the main sanctuary and a blessing for the onlookers. Jōnangū is known for the skill of its shrine priestesses (miko), and four of these young women perform a series of sacred kagura dances. The most dynamic part of the ritual comes with a senior priestess stirs sake, rice and salt into the pot as offerings before taking hold of sprigs of bamboo and dipping them into the pot, using them to scatter steam and boiling water around the area. Being hit by this water is even said to bring good health in the new year, and the bamboo is used afterwords as a charm for the home.
