A Walk At Egremont Castle

In Egremont, the original castle was built on a mound above the River Ehen. The present castle was built by William Meschin between 1120 and 1135. Further additions were made in the 13th century. It eventually fell into disuse and became the ruin it is today.

Its December and I took a quick walk through my hometown of Egremont Cumbria UK for you. Yes, we really do have flowers for sale still on the street. Egremont rarely gets snow and most times our temperatures don't dip below 0 Celsius.
I really have to do a walk into town when all the Christmas lights are on as well. :-)

Clintz Quarry - Woodend, near Egremont, Western Lake District

Clintz Quarry Nature Reserve is located near to the village of Cleator. It is the remains of an old limestone quarry that provided lime and iron ore for local industry. The name of the quarry originates from the blocks of lime stone left in the quarry basin, traditionally known as 'Clints' or 'Clintz'.

Clintz Quarry is owned and managed by The Cumbria Wildlife Trust who purchased the land from Lord Egremont and British Steel in 1984 when it had been disused for some fifty years.

In 1969 the site became a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its plant life.

Around 350 million years ago, the quarry was under a tropical sea. Today, fossils can be seen in the quarry walls and over the years silt and animals skeletons have left distinctive bands in the rock... I have to report that I didn't see any!!

Robins, goldcrests, long-tailed tits and sometimes treecreepers inhabit the quarry whilst kestrels and ravens nest on the quarry face. The pools harbour stickleback, palmate newt and common frog.

The quarry is open at all times. Visitors are requested to keep to the paths and not to remove any flowers, fossils or animals so protecting the area for future generations to enjoy.
