ISRAEL: JERUSALEM: CHEFS PREPARE FOR KING DAVID'S FEAST
Eng/French/Nat
Twelve of the world's finest chefs have gathered in Jerusalem to cook a feast for the celebration of the city's 3000th anniversary.
Two hundred and fifty diners attended the gala dinner in the city.
Preparations for the dinner, appropriately called King David's Feast, went on for three days.
All the ingredients had to be kosher to meet Jewish religious rules on food.
The chefs came from around the world, including top French restaurateur, Joel Robuchon, whose Paris eaterie, Restaurant Robuchon has three Michelin stars.
He explained what inspired him to come to Jerusalem:
SOUNDBITE:(French):
First, you can see the enthusiasm of all the chefs, twelve international cooks from around the world, who accepted to come here for free for such a show. I think it is this emotion and sensibility, which allowed for all to accept the invitation with great pleasure, and we are all very happy to be here to celebrate Jerusalem 3000.

After much deliberation the chefs decided on which dishes would be included in the gala dinner.
The final menu consisted of 12 courses, with dishes including roasted quail stuffed with foie gras and mushrooms, and gelee of acacia honey with strawberries.
American Chef Paul Prudhomme, of Restaurant K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen in New Orleans, says that he tried to use only authentic Jewish ingredients that have existed for centuries.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I was trying to use ingredients that were historical and I did pretty good. I had a historian telling me yesterday that the only thing in this that wasn't there when King David was, is tomatoes, and I have a little bit of tomato puree in the couscous, and that's it. Everything else was here 3000 years ago.

All the chefs who prepared a dish were presented to the 250 guests, who paid U-S $600 each to attend the celebratory dinner.
Proceeds went to the Ein Yael Museum, a museum dedicated to cultural understanding between Palestinians and Israelis.

My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Partial Visions: Art Today in Israel
A lecture by Carol Zemel, York University (Toronto)
Monday, April 28th, 2014
Adath Jeshurun Congregation
Contemporary art from Israel is widely exhibited and praised in international venues. However, works by Israeli artists today forego the utopian visions of earlier generations and now critically explore the issues of land, history, social change, and cultural diversity. Carol Zemel considers art by both Jewish and Arab Israelis, and their visions of change and renewal in the modern state. Artists to be discussed include: Michal Rovner, Roee Rosen, Yael Bartana, Hanna Farah, Rafram Haddad, Nasrin Abu Becer, Eden Ofrat, and Oded Hirsch.
Carol Zemel is professor of Art History and Visual Culture in the Department of Visual Arts at York University, Toronto, and in Fall 2013, Visiting Scholar in the Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life at Rutgers University. She has written three books on Vincent van Gogh, including Van Gogh's Progress: Utopia and Modernity in Late-Nineteenth Century Art. Her work now focuses on Jewish and diasporic issues and on the ethics of visuality in modern and contemporary art. Her book, Looking Jewish: Visual Culture in Modern Diaspora is forthcoming.
