Elands River Falls - Waterval Boven Waterfall - (Emgwenya)
The Elands River Falls is one of the highest waterfalls in Mpumalanga and is situated at one of South Africa's top rock climbing destinations.
With a unique split and a plummet of 70 m, Elands River Falls is just as dramatic and scenic as South Africa's highest waterfall, the 90 m Lisbon Falls.
Access to the observation platform is through the old ZAZM tunnel built in the late 1800s for the rail track between the towns Waterval Onder and Waterval Boven (meaning 'above the waterfall'), now named Emgwenya (Zulu for 'place of the crocodile').

Routes I got on that are 'Must Do' routes - basically everything at the Waterfall Crags, and I really enjoyed Day of the Triffids. I say that these routes deserve 4 stars, Day of the Triffids and Madiba Magic certainly do.

On route back from Elands Valley Marathon a couple of us stopped at the waterval boven waterfalls to have a peak at the falls

These fall 70 m in one drop, and are close to the NZASM tunnel.Also not far from another historical site called the Krugerhof, the last residence of President Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger in the South African Republic (ZAR), where there is a Museum.The river originates near the town of Machadodorp, in the Highveld Zone of Mpumalanga, and after passing over a complex waterfall, joins the right bank of the Crocodile River. -25.634617, 30.344731

Waterval Boven Railway tunnel
This railway tunnel through the Eland's River Mountain was surveyed by the engineers Bouten and Sissingh of the Netherlands South African Railway Company. On 18th October 1892 drilling was begun at both ends and on the 9th September 1893 the mountain was pierced.
The tunnel is 233 yards long and is the only rack railway in South Africa. The tunnel was closed and the line abolished in 1908.
As the view from the tunnel is so scenic, a viewing platform has been added since 1997 and seems to be attracting many visitors.

Elands River Hiking Trail Waterfall
Elands River Trail is in the Limietberg Nature Reserve in Du Toit's Kloof. It is an out and back day hike of about 12 km.
