Best Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai, Thailand
As a tourist, I need to be more aware of the organizations I support, especially when going on tours to visit different animals. Are they treating them right? Are they ethical? Do they exploit the animals for entertainment or black market trade? Nowadays, a lot of this information can be found online, so it is best to do your research rather than going in blindly.
I decided to visit the Hug Elephant Sanctuary because I wanted to go to a place where elephants were not exploited, and at the same time, still have a hands-on day experience with these large mammals.
The Hug Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai offers a more ethical approach to having a close encounter with elephants. You are only allowed to play, feed and bathe together with them.
It was a lot of fun! And definitely an experience for the books :)

My Elephant Owner for a Day Experience | Thailand
Being an Elephant caretaker for a day made for an unforgettable highlight of my trip to Thailand with my wife in November 2015.
Patara Elephant sanctuary is Thailand's only elephant breeding farm, and is run by the Karen people who have been caring for elephants for a loooong time. (Located in: Ban Pong, Hang Dong, Thailand which is essentially Chiang Mai)
We were each paired up with our own elephant and were taught how to check their health, how to care for their skin (wash them), fed them, and took them out for their daily exercise (a ride through the jungles of Northern Thailand).
You can check out their website at: for to learn more about this amazing organization and experience..
Maesa Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai Part 2/2.
In the lush tropical jungle of Chiang Mai's Maesa Valley, a big family of elephants lives side by side with their mahout caretakers. Maesa Elephant Camp is home to one of the largest assembly of elephants in the north of Thailand .
Their philosophy is to create a natural and healthy environment for the elephants while working to conserve and breed them, due to the dwindling number of Asian elephants left in the wild.

We spent the day at Chiang Mai Elephant Empire Sanctuary. Part of the Karen tribe, they have been caretakers of elephants for generations.

Elephant Sanctuary Chiang Mai – Save Thai Elephant Park – Asian Elephant Projects
Hear what visitors have to say about their experience at Save Thai Elephant Park, an ethical elephant sanctuary near Chiang Mai, in Northern Thailand. This project is home to three beautiful female elephants rescued from elephant riding. Since arriving at the park, the elephants have gained weight and have grown happier, healthier, and more relaxed day by day under the dedicated care of the project owner, Em.
As part of a small group, guests learn about the elephants while hand feeding them, and then take a walk with the elephants to the river that borders Elephant Nature Park where you can see the herds in the distance. Guests have the opportunity to bathe the elephants in the river or just observe them playing together. After a short walk back to the project, guests learn how to make the classic Thai dish – green papaya salad or Som Tum, and enjoy a healthy vegetarian buffet. In the afternoon, watch the elephants play in two large mud pools - an amazing sight. This project is suitable for all ages and is family friendly. By joining this tour, you are having a positive impact on the lives of elephants by making this form of ethical elephant tourism possible and sustainable.

RIDING ELEPHANTS IN CHIANG MAI
We got to spend an entire day taking care of elephants at the Karen Tribe. There are about 1 million people who belong to the Karen Tribe in Thailand alone!! This small village of Karen people are trying to right the wrongs of the past and bring elephants back into proper care to keep them healthy and strong. We spent the day getting to know our elephants and spent the day feeding and taking care of our elephant. My elephant was called Maebutong (apologies for the spelling) and we got taught a few commands that the handlers use. The two that we most used was 'Bon' which indicated the elephant should raise its head so we can feed it, and the other was 'Dede' which was used to tell the elephant 'good job' and show affection. You can find more about this experience at the Karen Tribe in the link below. I hope you enjoy :)

Patara Elephant Farm - Chiang Mai - Thailand
Patara Elephant Farm - Chiang Mai - Thailand - March 2017
Patara Elephant Farm is a health-recovery and reproduction-management farm for elephants. Its focus is on educating the public on elephants and the threats they face. To do this, the farm pairs visitors up with an elephant for a day and assigns them the task of caring for that elephant. As of December 2014, the farm is home to 55 elephants. It is located in the mountains near Hang Dong Valley, 45 minutes south of Chiang Mai, Thailand. It was founded in 2001 by a man named Theerapat Pat Trungprakan's and his wife Anocha Dao with the goal of preserving the elephant population in Thailand. Theerapat says there is much sacrifice involved, and says he and the other caretakers spend more time with the elephants than with their wives. The elephants' caretakers, known as mahouts, are from a nearby Karen village and are paired-up with their own elephant to take care of.

Elephant Encounter Plus tour - Northeast Thailand (Isan)
Ban Ta Klang is home to the Kui (aka Suai) people, Thailand's legendary elephant handlers, and about 150 elephants live side-by-side with them at their homes in the village. We'll spend a full day with the elephants, mostly out walking with and watching them in patches of forest and at watering holes, and they are off chains the entire time. We even get to help bathe the elephants in the Mun River. Most people consider engaging with elephants in natural surroundings such as this to be far better than watching them perform circus acts. There will be one elephant per guest, though solo travelers will get two so you can see them interact socially.
Although the elephants are the focus of this tour, we make many other stops before and after your elephant encounter including Khmer ruins, historic temples, craft villages, a forest full of semi-tame monkeys, and a bizarre sculpture park. We also pass through an important silk weaving region and we'll stop to visit a weaving village that raises its own silk worms.
We also have two-day ( and three-day ( versions of this tour.
