Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum Oslo, Norway September 2018
My opinion after for the first time spending 30 minutes inside the Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum.
Constructed by Emanuel Vigeland in 1926 to house his paintings and sculptures he later ddecided to use the structure as his tomb. There now exist no windows and his ashes were to rest in an urn above the door. The Building’s interior is home to a 800-square-metre painting that characterizes the human life from conception to Death.

Mausoleum
#Emanuel #Vigeland's #museum at #Slemdal is one of #Oslo's #best #kept #secrets. The museum's main attraction is a dark, barrel vaulted room completely covered in frescoes. The 800 m2 painting Vita describes in dramatic - and #highly #erotic - scenes human life from #conception to #death. Large bronze figurative groups repeat the tributes of the walls to the mystery of propagation. Going into the museum is an experience in itself. The impression of the dimly lit frescoes with the many hundreds of naked figures is enhanced by an unusual and overwhelming acoustics.
Emanuel Vigeland (1875-1948) himself built the museum building in 1926, with a view to a future museum for his sculptures and paintings. He later decided that the museum should also serve as a burial chamber. All the windows were re-walled and his ashes were to rest in an urn over the door. In line with Italian examples, he named his building Tomba Emmanuelle.
Emanuel Vigeland's life and work is fully described and illustrated in Tone Klev Vene's critically acclaimed biography Emanuel Vigeland - Vita, published at Dreyer's publishing house in 2013.
Biographical information on Emanuel Vigeland can be found in the Norwegian biographical lexicon (2005)
The mausoleum has a unique acoustics with approx. 20 seconds of reverberation and is regularly rented out for concerts. For updated information on concerts and other events, follow Billettservice and the museum's Facebook page.

The statuary of Vigeland matched with the poetry of Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet and H.G. Wells' Discovery of the Future.

Emanuel Vigeland's Museum at Slemdal is one of Oslo's best kept secrets. The museum's main attraction is a dark, barrel-vaulted room, completely covered with fresco paintings. The 800 sq.m. fresco Vita depicts human life from conception till death, in dramatic and often explicitly erotic scenes. Large groups of bronze figures reiterate the dedication to the mystery of procreation. Entering the museum is a unique experience. The impression of the dimly lit frescoes with multitudes of naked figures is reinforced by the unusual and overwhelming acoustics of the room.

i recently had the privelege of playing a show in oslo, norway, and my favorite part of the trip (besides the show!), was getting to visit the emanuel vigeland mausoleum
emanuel vigeland was a well-known artist in oslo who built this building as a museum for his work in 1926. he eventually decided that it should serve as his burial place, and now his ashes reside above the entrance.
all the windows were closed up and when you enter the cavernous room, there is very little light and you can't really see anything. as your eyes begin to adjust, you realize that the enormous barrel-vaulted room is completely covered by vigeland's fresco paintings depicting human life from conception until death.
the acoustics of the room are amazing...there is something like a 12 second delay to every little sound that happens inside. they have concerts there, and they let me bring my guitar in for a private visit.
it's hard to capture on video, but the experience of this place was pretty incredible. it is a little bit like being transported to a dark and mysterious alternate dimension.
if you're ever in oslo, make sure you stop by.

The Sorcerer Family - Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum Museum- Occult Electric Ukulele
I had the great fortune of being able to perform a bit of occult electric ukulele at the most magnificent Emanuel Vigeland Museum in Oslo, Norway. Emanuel intended this building to act as an exhibition space for his paintings and sculptures. However, he decided to use this amazing space to serve as his mausoleum instead. Emanuel's ashes are stored in an urn above the entrance of the museum. The mausoleum is covered from wall to ceiling with his spectacular fresco paintings.
The mausoleum's design allows an extraordinary echo to even the most slightest of sounds. I used a solid body Fluke electric ukulele with a portable battery-powered Smokey Amp. No effects were used.
Thank you to Yvonne Thomsen and the Emanuel Vigeland Museum for allowing me to make some noise.
