Chemainus is a community on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
Founded as a logging town in 1858, the town is now famous for its 39 outdoor murals. This outdoor gallery has given birth to 300 businesses, including a theatre, antiques dealers, and eateries. The tourist industry stemming from the murals saved the town after its mill closed in the early 1980s. A resident of Chemainus is known as a Chemainiac.
Chemainus TheatreThe name Chemainus comes from the native shaman and prophet Tsa-meeun-is (Broken Chest). Legend says that the man survived a massive wound in his chest to become a powerful chief. His people took his name to identify their community, Chemainus First Nation.
The railroad arrived in the 1880s and by the early 1920s the town's population had ballooned to 600 persons. Today, Chemainus has a population of approximately 5,000.
Chemainus Secondary School is located in the town, and serves as a secondary school for students living in Chemainus, Crofton, and Saltair.
A BC Ferry terminal is located in Chemainus, which provides service to Thetis Island and Penelakut Island (previously Kuper).
Canada Railroad later. Japanese, and later, east Indians blended their cultures with Scots and Germans looking for riches in the mines and staying to work in the forests and on fishing boats. And the beautiful Cowichan Valley has been the home of The Original First Nations peoples and their ancestors for countless generations, whose history and lives have been interwoven since those first white settlers came to the area.
Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia, Canada and is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island off Canada's Pacific coast. The city has a population of about 80,017 within the metropolitan area of Greater Victoria, which has a population of 344,615, the 15th most populous Canadian metro region.
Victoria is about 100 kilometres (62 miles) from BC's largest city of Vancouver on the mainland. The city is about 100 kilometres (62 miles) from Seattle by airplane, ferry, or the Victoria Clipper passenger-only ferry which operates daily, year round between Seattle and Victoria and 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Port Angeles, Washington by ferry across the Juan de Fuca Strait.
Named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and of the Dominion of Canada, Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest, with British settlement beginning in 1841. The city has retained a large number of its historic buildings, in particular its two most famous landmarks, the British Columbia Parliament Buildings (finished in 1897 and home of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia) and the Empress hotel (opened in 1908). The city's Chinatown is the second oldest in North America after San Francisco's. The region's Coast Salish First Nations peoples established communities in the area long before non-native settlement, possibly several thousand years earlier, which had large populations at the time of European exploration. Victoria, like many Vancouver Island communities, continues to have a sizable First Nations presence, composed of peoples from all over Vancouver Island and beyond.
Known as the City of Gardens, Victoria is an attractive city and a popular tourism destination with a thriving technology sector that has risen to its largest revenue producing private industry. The city has a large non-local student population, who come to attend the University of Victoria, Camosun College, Royal Roads University, the Sooke Schools International Program and the Canadian College of Performing Arts. Victoria is also popular with retirees, who come to enjoy the temperate and usually snow-free climate of the area as well as the usually relaxed pace of the city.Wikipedia

With 477 rooms The Empress is mostly decorated in the Victorian-era Colonial Indian style, as was the fashion during the age of Queen Victoria and Rudyard Kipling.
Built between 1904 and 1908 The Empress saw many improvements and expansions over the years. All the while, management, patrons and the population-at-large of Victoria were keenly aware that the venerable air of the hotel was what kept many tourists coming back to the city.
The Empress is well known for its classic Victorian afternoon tea service. During the summer months, the hotel serves tea (along with tea sandwiches, fresh scones, preserves and clotted cream known as Empress cream) in its 'Tea Room' to more than 800 guests and tourists daily. Afternoon tea is approximately CAD $60 per person, and reservations are often required one or two weeks in advance.
While filming the exterior I was surprised to see a marmot pop up amongst the beehives that the hotel keeps. I have now been fully-enlightened that Roger is a fixture here, and while marmots are native to Vancouver Island, it is presumed that this yellow bellied marmot (native to Alberta) hopped a ride on some travelling vehicle in order to take up residence on these stately grounds. Well done, Roger!

Victoria BC – Empress Hotel – Thank God It’s Friday – Short Film – Part 2
Thank God It’s Friday – or TGIF – is a short film in 4K that was 10 years in the making. For the last 10 years it has been our habit on Friday evenings to take the relatively short walk into the downtown/Chinatown area of Victoria, British Columbia. The city never fails to amaze us with its beauty and charm. Victoria is perhaps Canada’s best kept secret – for some would say there is no better city in Canada. Certainly there is no better city in Canada as a destination for retirement. So what better way to capture that enchantment of Victoria than in a short film.
In Part 1 – Victoria – A Love Story – we capture the main reasons why we love the city of Victoria. In Part 2 – we walk through the iconic city symbol – The Empress Hotel that is full of Old World. We may not be able afford to stay at the Empress Hotel or even to enjoy the High Tea at $60 per person but there is nothing to stop a “leche vitrine” walk through the hotel as we often do – just to soak it in or as the French say “faire du lèche-vitrines.”

The hotel has received several accolades including Travel + Leisure Best Hotels of the World and recognized on Conde Nast Gold List. The hotel became Victoria's first Five Green Key hotel as acknowledged by the Hotel Association of Canada for sustainability practices
