Erarta is the largest private museum of contemporary art in Russia, located in Saint Petersburg.
At the heart of Erarta lies a totally unique approach to both the art and the viewer; a desire to build a new relationship system between people and art.
The overall objective of the project is to collect, exhibit, and popularize most ingenious and skillful works by contemporary artists, both Russian and foreign.[2] The main part of the project is the museum of contemporary art named Erarta, located in Saint Petersburg. In addition to the museum, the project also encompasses a workshop, publishing and educational programs, as well as various cultural events and activities. Erarta's mission is not only to propagate Russian artists within Russia and abroad but also to offer a sanctuary to individuals who are interested in art, yet are intimidated by museums.
For the opening of Erarta Museum Dmitry Zhukov created two five-meter high sculptures – ‘Era’ and ‘Arta’, which are currently installed on the stylobate of the museum building. As Russian is cyrillic, the founders decided to focus on the phonetics of two words that were exchangeable in Russian and English. Thus, Erarta represents the new 'Era' of 'Art'.

Russian contemporary art on show
(10 Mar 2017) LEADIN
Moscow's famed contemporary art museum Garage has opened its first 'Triennial' featuring artists from across Russia's 11 time zones.
The works by nearly 70 artists are an expression of the huge diversity of cultures within Russia.
STORYLINE
These glittering, mechanical creations are just a few of the many works on display at Garage, Moscow's latest show.
This is the contemporary gallery's first 'Triennial'. It focuses exclusively on Russian art but contains huge diversity, featuring artists from across Russia's 11 time zones.
Garage's founder Dasha Zhukova was in the audience at the exhibition's launch.
She launched this sleek modern gallery in Moscow's Gorky Park in 2008 with her famous husband, the Russian billionaire and Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich.
Katya Inozemtseva is one of the curators of the Garage Triennial. She and other curators were sent out across Russia to gather a diverse range of art works. The result is an ambitious show aimed at energizing the art scene at home and establishing Russia abroad. Regarding the competitiveness of Russian art globally Inozemtseva says:
It depends on what we mean, if that's a sales turnover of art or turnover of Russian artists compared to European or US artists then no (it does not stand up to competition with US or European art). But if we're talking about other competitiveness. If we talk about the quality of artistic labour then of course, yes. We do believe in all the artists we show here.
The show features work by nearly 70 artists across all genres of contemporary practice: painting, sculpture, video, installation and conceptual. Most of the works were created from 2012 onwards. The combined result is a montage of the very different cultures found within Russia's geographical borders.
Works by artists from regions as far flung as Siberia, the Far East and Chechnya sit alongside their peers from the Russian capital and their differences are obvious. But according to Garage founder Dasha Zhukova that's exactly the point.
But most of the artists, including the artist behind of 'Changed Your Mind? That's OK!' Sveta Shuvaava, dont wish to be defined by their country or region:
I consider myself just an artist. Russian? Well, if you'd like to call me Russian, let it be Russian, if you'd like to call me international, that is fine. I do not mind to be called that way. I think this doesn't change anything. Same as a young artist. Young or old, what is the difference. An artist is an artist, she says.
Another artist, Aslan Gaisumov, feels the same:
I am not a Russian or Chechen artist, I am just an artist. I do not like it when I am called Russian or Chechen, or anything else, he says.
The work at Triennial brings together a combination of well recognized and emerging artists.
Contemporary art writer and critic Arie Amaya-Akkermans says that some works presented at the triennial could compete with the well-established Western art scene.
I guess that at some point in the 70s, 80s, 90s, something happened in which Russian art started to feed off this language of the Soviet Union and pop art and western tendencies and many other things. But there was a disconnect for a very long time between the trajectories of art history and of Russian art and now it is only slowly catching up.
For gallery founder Dasha Zhukova theTriennial is about offering a platform for different voices in Russian art to 'agree and disagree'.
