The Israeli military said its Iron Dome rocket-defence system shot down an incoming projectile bound for Tel Aviv on Saturday.
Footage from Associated Press Television News showed a plume of smoke emanating from an Iron Dome battery deployed in Tel Aviv followed by a flash of light overhead as the rocket is intercepted.
People huddled along Tel Aviv's beach front boardwalk cheered as the interception took place.
It's the third successive day that Gaza militants have fired rockets at Tel Aviv, Israel's bustling commercial and cultural capital.
Israel said its Iron Dome system had intercepted nearly 250 rockets since a round of fighting broke out on Wednesday.

STORYLINE
Palestinian families crowded onto a beach near Gaza City on Sunday, at the start of the three-month school summer holiday.
For residents of the Gaza Strip, the beach is the one place they can go to have some fun and escape from the constant reminders of the recent Israeli assault on their territory, and the daily hardships of their life under the Israeli blockade.
Reconstruction has barely begun in the territory since Israel's punishing offensive ended in mid-January, and Gaza resident Ezat Al-Nounou said the destruction was still everywhere.
Wherever we want to take the children, we see destruction and shooting, except the beach. There isn't anywhere to take a load off us and the children, except the beach, he said.
Palestinian non-governmental organisations and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) have finalised their preparations for organising summer camps for school children, not only on Gaza beaches, but also in schools and playgrounds.
Gaza has been relatively quiet since the end of the conflict with Israel, but sporadic violence has continued along the border with Israel carrying out occasional airstrikes and brief incursions into the coastal strip.
On Sunday, the Israeli military said that its aircraft had attacked smuggling tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border, causing damage to the tunnels but reportedly no casualties.
Most of the Palestinian attacks against Israeli patrols, and bombs planted along the fence dividing Gaza and Israel, have reportedly been initiated by small militant groups and not by Hamas, the Islamist organisation that has controlled Gaza for two years.
Israel's three week offensive which started at the end of December left more than 1,400 Palestinians dead, including more than 900 civilians, amongst them scores of children, according to Palestinian officials and human rights groups.
It also destroyed thousands of homes and heavily damaged Gaza's infrastructure.
Israel claims the death toll was lower and that most of the dead were armed militants.
The Strip was already under a crippling Israeli blockade which was imposed after Hamas were democratically elected in a 2006 Palestinian parliament vote.
Hamas then broke off with the government of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas following months of conflict over power-sharing with the new government.
The group eventually took control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007, leaving Abbas' government in nominal control of the occupied West Bank only.

STORYLINE
Underneath the plaza outside the Habima national theatre in Tel Aviv, Israelis have put the finishing touches on the country's most advanced public underground bomb shelter.
Accessible to those on foot by flights of stairs, it's usually a parking lot, four stories underground, secured by an armored door. It has space for 1,600 people, with drinking water stored in tanks mounted on the wall.
The project comes at a time of rising tensions with Iran.
And one Kadima party Knesset member doesn't think such protective measures are sufficient, given the threats he sees the country facing...
SOT
A local hospital chief details some of the problems. In 48 hours, the shelter under the Sourasky Medical Centre can be transformed into an emergency ward with up to a thousand beds. But doing so won't be easy...
SOT
Despite an elaborate network of neighborhood shelters all over the city, they probably can only accomodate around 250,000 people -- a fraction of the two million who live in and around Tel Aviv.
The last time the city faced direct fire was 1991, when Iraq launched rockets at it.
If Israel ends up in an open conflict with Iran officials figure the attack would be far more intense. In addition to Iran's own arsenal, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, possess tens of thousands of rockets that could be fired at Israel. That has some authorities worried, even if residents seem relaxed about the situation at the moment.

Tel Aviv comes under fire from Gaza rockets
The Israeli city of Tel Aviv has been coming under fire from Gaza.
Two rockets are reported to have been intercepted mid-air.
Israeli officials say at least 40 rockets have been fired into Israel since Monday morning.
The Iron Dome defence system is stopping most of the rockets coming from Gaza, but a house was struck in the southern city of Sderot.
Meanwhile, the Israeli President Shimon Peres has been visiting the families of Israeli soldiers killed over the weekend during the ground offen...

Tel-Aviv Zombie Walk
An unusual annual event in Israel's party city gives life to the undead.
Fake blood, grisly gore and white faces are all part of the fun at the annual Zombie Walk in Tel Aviv.
The procession winds through city streets ahead of the Jewish holiday of Purim, when people traditionally dress in costumes and indulge in revelry.
This holiday's way better than Halloween, says one party-goer.
A zombie named Bat-El adds, It's a bunch of very cool people coming all the way from all over Israel, I think, just like zombies. I think it's really cool. I've been waiting for this since last year.
