Winter Wreck fishing in Falmouth Bay Cornwall
After a long break due to ill health Rodbenders filming is back and this year I will be filming a diary of fishing on the Wave Chieftain out of Falmouth along with other adventurers as yet unplanned.
This video is the first for 2017 and is a wrecking trip on a neap tide so the target fish are Eel's and Ling.
As always the day provides moments that will become fond memories and this one is no exception.
WARNING There is some strong adult language and banter in this movie.

The first time ever in the UK someone has caught and landed 2 300lb+ Bluefin Tuna single handed on their own 16ft boat and caught it on camera!!! This was intended to be a video targeting Porbeagle sharks but these were a very welcome by catch. Leadered, unhooked, revived and released boat side. What an amazing day and incredible creatures. 3/32 From Falmouth to Salcombe – The Adventure Begins
So on a flat, calm April afternoon, we left our home port of Falmouth and headed east up the channel on the greatest adventure of our lives. A voyage around the coasts of Britain and Ireland.
If there could have been a good omen for our trip then this is it - a pod of dolphins that just wanted to play. What more could anyone want?
Wow! Two together, look at that! They are belly to belly! How was that then John?
That was amazing! Dolphins everywhere! Off the bow, riding the wave, in the distance, jumping, everywhere! For about 15 minutes we have just had dolphins with us, all around us, amazing! What a brilliant first day!
What do you think they were?
I don’t know, they are really small. They look like Spinner Dolphins don’t they. Really small, they weren’t the big Atlantic dolphins. Maybe they’re Porpoises? I really don’t know.
First stop Salcombe, just three hours due east, passing the Eddystone light. There have been lighthouses on this rock for over 300 years. This is the fourth. Alongside there’s the stump of the third, Smeaton’s Tower, which has been rebuilt on the Hoe at Plymouth.
So it’s about 8pm in the evening on the first day of the journey. We’re in Salcombe and we’re just going to go and get a Pizza.
Well we got up early this morning it’s still not even 7am. Beautiful morning, good sea, very very slight breeze. The fuel barge here at Salcombe isn’t going to be open for at least another hour so we thought we’d get on. We’re going to Dartmouth - by the time we get to Dartmouth the fuel barge there should be open. Maybe grab a bit of breakfast there, grab a paper and then we are going to head across Lyme bay straight east as far as we get during the day. Should be a good one.
We often visit Salcombe, but rarely go beyond, so as we head out past Start Point, it feels like the adventure is now really beginning. By the end of today we hope to have already gone further along the south coast than we have ever taken the boat before.
1966: Falmouth, street scenes and a boat trip
Here we see Falmouth as it was over 50 years ago in 1966. The children are on their way to school, running down the steep steps of the town's alleys. There are steam ships in the port. On a boat trip out in the estuary, we see tugs pulling a ship out of port on its way overseas.

Haddock Fishing - Sea Fishing Tips For Beginners
Taking every break I can in the weather, I took this opportunity to head down west and fish some different waters. I haven't drifted for Haddock in the this area on my own boat before and I was thrilled with the day I had. As you will see there was a fair amount of ground swell still out there making the day far from perfect. I hope you find some useful information and enjoy the fishing as much as I did.
