Penzance, Cornwall
Penzance, or Pensans to give it its Cornish name, is a major Cornish town located at the start of the Penwith peninsula and beside the coast. Penzance is located next to Newlyn, one of the largest fishing ports in Britain.
Penzance is located in Mount's Bay, a large bay between the Penwith and Lizard peninsulas. It is the first and last train stop in the UK and the last major town.
The town was granted a number of royal charters from 1512, however the town was incorporated on 9th May 1614. In the 2011 census, Penzance had a population of 21,200.
The name Penzance derives from its Cornish name, Pensans, which means 'holy headland'. There was once a chapel here, dedicated to St Anthony, around where Penzance Harbour now is however that chapel has been long gone.
The first recording of inhabitants in Penzance is during the Bronze Age, approximately 3,000 years ago, and a number of Bronze Age artefacts have been found in the town, especially in the Alverton area. During the Iron Age, an iron age round called Lescudjack Castle was built. This is located at the end of a housing estate and, although partly destroyed, it is still very much visible as an Iron Age round.
One of Penzance's most famous children is Sir Humphry Davy, the inventor of the miners safety lamp and Nitrous Oxide, which he named 'Laughing Gas' after it made him laugh when experimenting with it. He also isolated for the first time ever the elements of Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Strontium, Barium, Magnesium, Boron and discovering the elemental nature of Chlorine and Iodine, which shaped Science forever.
Penzance's town centre consists mainly on six streets. These six streets are Market Jew Street, The Greenmarket, Causewayhead, Alverton Street, Chapel Street and Wharf Road. There is also a shopping centre here called Wharfside Shopping Centre which is used to get from the car park by Penzance Harbour to the town centre.
Penzance is made up of two parishes, St Mary's and St John's, with the majority of the town being part of St Mary's parish, which is associated with St Mary's Church, the largest church.
Penzance has one beach, Wherrytown Beach, which is a rocky beach situated between the town and Newlyn. There is also another beach which comes at low tide by Battery Rocks, however this is very stony.
Penzance is one of Cornwall's largest towns and is approximately 2 miles long by 1.4 miles wide.

Places to see in ( Newlyn - UK )
Newlyn is a seaside town and fishing port in south-west Cornwall, UK. Newlyn lies on the shore of Mount's Bay and forms a small conurbation with the neighbouring town of Penzance. It is part of the Penzance civil parish, and is the southern-most town on the British mainland (though not the most southerly settlement).
The principal industry is fishing, although there are also a wide variety of yachts and pleasure boats, in the harbour, as Newlyn is becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination, with many pubs and restaurants. Although the parish is now listed under Penzance there is an electoral ward in separate existence called Newlyn and Mousehole. The population as of the 2011 census was 4,432.
Before the rise of Newlyn as an important settlement the landing rights and most property within the Newlyn area were owned by the Manor of Alverton. Newlyn's history has been strongly linked to its role as a major fishing port. The natural protection afforded by the Gwavas Lake (an area of seawater in Mount's Bay) led to many local fishermen using this area as a preferred landing site.
Before the 19th century, Newlyn referred only to the area near the old quay. The part of the village that now contains the fish market was known as Streetanowan, this was separated at high tide from Newlyn Town the site of the lower part of the modern harbour being reclaimed land and formerly a beach. In fact Newlyn comprises three discrete hamlets all previously separated by bodies of water, being Tolcarne (Tal Carn: Brow of the Rocks), Street-an-Nowan (Steet-an-Awan: River Street) and Trewarveneth (Farm/Manor on the Hill).
Newlyn (like Mousehole) was part of the ancient parish of Paul. It was common for villagers to climb the relatively steep route from Newlyn Cliff to Paul via the area which is now known as Gwavas to worship at Paul Church. Until the mid-20th century an ancient stone cross was present on this route at Park an Grouse (The Field of the Cross), this cross was one site of veneration of the Cornish sea deity Bucca, (others were the beaches of Newlyn and Mousehole) the name 'Bucca' has often been used as a nickname for people who reside in Newlyn: the location of the cross is now unknown.
In the 1880s a number of artists flocked to the town and formed an artists' colony. The painters of Newlyn came to be known as the Newlyn School. In 1896 Newlyn was the scene of the Newlyn riots following protests over the landing of fish on a Sunday by fishermen from the North of England, the local Cornish fishermen being members of the Methodist church and as such strong supporters of sabbatarianism.
Newlyn is located in western Cornwall, just south of Penzance. It lies along the B3315 road which connects it to Land's End. Paul and Mousehole lie to the south. The Ordnance Survey, the United Kingdom's mapping agency, bases all elevations including mapped contour lines and spot heights on the mean sea level at Newlyn . The mean sea level data was calculated from hourly readings of the sea level between 1 May 1915 and 30 April 1921.

Places to see in ( Redruth - UK )
Redruth is a town and civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Redruth lies approximately at the junction of the A393 and A3047 roads, on the route of the old London to Land's End trunk road (now the A30), and is approximately 9 miles (14 km) west of Truro, 12 miles (19 km) east of St Ives, 18 miles (29 km) north east of Penzance and 11 miles (18 km) north west of Falmouth. Camborne and Redruth together form the largest urban area in Cornwall and before local government reorganisation were an urban district.
The Parish Church of St Uny, which is some distance from the town centre, is of Norman foundation but was rebuilt in 1756. The patron saint is also honoured at Lelant. The tower is two centuries earlier and the whole church is built of granite. A chapel of ease was built in the town in 1828 but it is no longer in use. Other places of worship include the Wesleyan Church of 1826, the Free Methodist Church of 1864 (in grand Italianate style) and the Quaker Meeting House of 1833 (no longer in use).
The former post office in Alma Place is now known as the Cornish Studies Centre: also housed there is the collection of Tregellas Tapestries which depict the history of Cornwall in embroidery. The Mining Exchange building is now used as a housing advice centre (it was built in 1880 as accommodation for share brokers).
The house now called Murdoch (or, sometimes Murdock) House in the middle of Cross Street was erected in the 1660s as a chapel and it afterwards became a prison. William Murdoch lived in it from 1782 to 1798. Murdoch House has since been fully restored and is now regularly used by the Redruth Old Cornwall Society, as well as the Cornish-American Connection and the Redruth Story Group. Next door are St. Rumon's Gardens.
Redruth is an important transport hub. The railway station is a railhead for both Helston and the Lizard, and there are frequent buses connecting the three places. The railway station is served by trains from Paddington, as well as the Midlands and the North. Redruth is next to the main A30 road and thus has access to the main route out of the county as well as routes to the far West, North Cornwall, South East Cornwall and Plymouth.
