Brazil Violence: Peace is over in Rio's Santa Marta favela
A decade ago, the Santa Marta favela in the heart of Rio de Janeiro was the first hillside slum to be cleared of gangs. It quickly became a government model of so-called 'pacification' and a key tourist spot, even providing the backdrop for a Michael Jackson video clip. But today, like in most of Rio's favela communities, drug traffickers are back and so is the tension with those who live there. Christine Pirovolakis has the story.

A short tour of the the Favela Santa Marta in Rio de Janeiro
I did not sign up for an official tour, but just started walking up the favela. Pretty quickly I ran into two friendly locals who took me from the bottom of the favala and up to the soccer field on top. I walked the Rua Oswaldo Seabra road from there back down to the Botafogo Metro. Smiles and happy faces all around.
By the way, this is the same place where Michael Jackson shot his video They Don't Care About Us in 1996

Life in the favela at Rio
Today our story will be about Rio De Janeiro and the people that are living inside the favela. After a four days tour inside the favela, a big research about how people live and talking with many locals I created this small video in order to share with everyone the harsh truth about life conditions and poverty in these slums.
I would like to thank Michelle for the interview and for opening her heart to me and my tour guide Vlasto who kept me safe all these days, introduced me to the locals and helped me to make the video.

Os moradores da comunidade Santa Marta, na Zona Sul do Rio de Janeiro, vivem dias de pânico com a violência crescente no local. Apenas no mês de agosto deste ano, 14 tiroteios foram registrados na favela.
Os projetos de passeios turísticos até foram interrompidos por causa da violência no local.

Football @ Favela Santa Marta
A short video clip Junpiter Futbol (JPF) recorded while walking up famous Favela Santa Marta at Rio de Janeiro during World Cup Brazil 2014. The video captured the original sound & voices of the Brazilians conversing in their native language, Portugese at their doorsteps.
Junpiter Futbol was there to participate in a football match against the Favela locals in which certain portion of the trip registration fees went to the rebuilding of the football community at Favela Santa Marta.
