Fazakas Gallery and Olliemoonsta Time Lapse - Bauhaus Restaurant in Gastown (Vancouver)
Fazakas Gallery's Olliemoonsta - the Spanish artist duo of Naza del Rosal and Juan Rico - were excited by the challenge to create a graffiti-based work in Gastown's new German restaurant, Bauhaus. Working together with gallery owner LaTiesha Fazakas and Natalie Boll from Bauhaus, they came up with an outstanding commission the likes of which Vancouver has never seen before.
“I knew the restaurant wanted to capture the feeling of Urban Berlin in Vancouver in a way that reflected back to the roots of Bauhaus, German design, so the artists and I did a lot of research and put a lot of thought into the intention behind the work to be done. Then the artists let their creativity fly!” said gallery owner, LaTiesha Fazakas.
Both the creativity and paint flew, and the result is an experience no one who enters these bathrooms will forget. Street-art, Pac-man and the fundamental Bauhaus circle, square and triangle meet to create a graphic cornucopia with such an unadulterated contrast to high-end dining experience that one cannot help being intrigued.

Maker of Monsters: The extraordinary life of Beau Dick
Maker of Monsters is a poignant documentary on the life and career of Kwakwaka'wakw artist, legend, activist, and icon, Beau Dick
Maker of Monsters gives an intimate look into the life of one of Canada’s greatest artists, though he never did consider himself Canadian. Rather, he considered himself a host to the Canadian people. This film strives to capture the essence of Beau Dick and his magical enigma as an artist who symbolized Canada’s history with the First Nations and the ethical dilemmas faced in reconciling with that colonialist history. Beau was able to use his celebrity to call attention to the injustices done to his people and to the environment.
Directed by LaTiesha Fazakas and Natalie Boll

Food Adventures: Part 1 - Gastown (Nicli Antica Pizzeria)
Part 1 of a food series that features local Vancouver restaurants, friends having a good time, and a girl looking for something to do over the summer. This time, my friends Ginny Tsao and Jessica Qu join me at a hip little pizzeria in Gastown, called Nicli Antica Pizzeria. This restaurant specializes in Neopolitan pizza and also serves various pastas and desserts. For more information about Nicli Antica Pizzeria, visit:
This video almost sounds like it is sponsored, but sadly, it is not. If you would like to sponsor me and have your restaurant featured on my channel (which is very unpopular at the moment - wow great sales pitch) please feel free to shoot me an email at jessheisme@berkeley.edu (#GOBEARS). If you would like to sponsor me just for kicks, since I am indeed a poor college student with an unfortunately large appetite and a passion for good, often expensive food, please also feel free to do that as well.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this video please comment, like, and share since it really does feed my ego.

Exciting news from Bauhaus Restaurant owner, Uwe Boll!
Exciting news!! With our great new kitchen and front of the house crew, we’re happy to announce that in two weeks we’ll be changing the layout of our menu, right after the white asparagus season is over.
Also, we’ve created a little lounge perfect for hanging out during summer, so you can come and enjoy our new cocktail menu while eating a small bite.
And since we know that our classic Schnitzel is a local favorite, you can set your mind at ease because it’ll remain the same at our Friday’s lunch and for dinners. Stay tuned for more! #BauhausRestaurant
Meet Beau Dick Maker of Monsters
This film, in production, is a full-length documentary about the remarkable artist Beau Dick.
The hallmark of a truly great artist is the ability to give form to the intangible. Tapping into the collective memory of his people and turning their greatest fantasies into reality, Beau Dick is one such artist. An enigmatic carver of the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nations, Beau's eclectic masks have been celebrated across the global art scene as vibrant expressions of West Coast Native mythology. But the line where artist ends and society begins is constantly blurred, and with the commercial aspects of his work often overshadowing its cultural connections, the deeper matter of who Beau and his people are ends up pushed to the wayside. Looking to his past for answers, Meet Beau Dick strives to unearth the factors that have made Beau who he is today -- his upbringing, his struggles with identity -- and like a carver chipping away at a block of wood, bring something clearer out of the woodwork. As Beau reconnects to his roots and develops as an artist and steward for is people, the story of the Kwakwaka'wakw themselves is brought to the forefront; their rich history, their dramatic mythology, and the terrible scars endured under colonial brutality. Weaving together the personal and cultural until both become inseparable, the documentary presents a man who has finally reconciled the two. With Beau's self-knowledge he understands the power of an artist can be enormous, and begins to use that clarity to move forward into the future. Detailing his work both in his community and in the Idle No More movement, Meet Beau Dick peers into a man whose art and life continue to transcend expectations and boundaries. Coming round full circle to the gallery in which the film begins, his work takes on new meaning; Beau Dick is not simply a maker of monsters, he is a conqueror of them as well.

RBC Emerging Series Jeneen Frei Njootli – from strenth to this question
Through sound, action and mixed-media installation, Jeneen Frei Njootli’s work explores the history embedded in materials and power relations in connection to land.
Frei Njootli's new work, from strength to this question (2019), begins with a live performance on March 1. The artist combines vocalizations with sound generated from objects including skidoo hoods and beads, using contact microphones and effects pedals to create a complex sonic experience. An audio recording of the performance animates the space for the duration the installation. The sound connects everything in its path as it moves through the museum: bodies, surfaces and structures.
The ski-doo hoods also remain, carrying traces of the artist’s touch. from strength to this question is part of Frei Njootli’s ongoing engagement with the ski-doo and its important social, cultural and economic role in Vuntut Gwitchin communities. The disassembled forms—at once industrial and animal—appear as parts of a fractured body or shell. Separated from their original use, they take on new value and meaning.
Unless otherwise posted, from strength to this question will be played at 15 minutes past each hour, during regular museum hours.
The annual RBC Emerging Artist Series provides support for the production of a new work at Remai Modern. The projects take place in different areas of the museum and may include site-specific installations, interventions or performances.
Curated by Rose Bouthillier, Curator (Exhibitions)
About the Artist: Jeneen Frei Njootli is an interdisciplinary Vuntut Gwitchin artist, who has been living and working as an uninvited guest on unceded Musqueam, Squamish, Sto:lo and Tsleil-Waututh territories for a decade. Through sound-based performances, textiles and mixed media installation work, Frei Njootli explores the history embedded in cultural materials, geopolitics and the politics of Indigenous art.
For her recent Media Arts Residency at the Western Front in Vancouver, she hosted a free workshop on how to create and update Wikipedia pages for Indigenous women artists. The 2017 recipient of the Contemporary Art Society Vancouver Artist Prize, she has exhibited at the Contemporary Art Gallery, Fierman Gallery in New York, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and the Vancouver Art Gallery among others. After graduating from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2012, Frei Njootli completed her MFA at the University of British Columbia in 2017.
