Morocco is known for their leather exports.
So when in a medieval city like Old Fez, a popular tourist attraction is often to take a tannery tour. What are tanneries? A seven century age-old way of making leather products from belts to bags, cushions, etc...through the skinning, shearing, drying and dyeing of animal skins with the help of laborious manpower and big vats of all-natural dyes.
Now guide books will be-cry the relationship between the tanneries and its smell as a forewarning, such that a post-911 New York resident and vegetarian like myself, immediately began drawing notions of the deathly odor as being from rotting carcasses. I admit, I was a bit reluctant to tourist this territory. Nevertheless, my curiosity is stronger than fear or stench, and pinching my nostrils and breathing through the side of my mouth held work-around solutions for opening this bejeweled Fez-ian Pandora's prize.
Well, honestly,... the smell was nowhere near the scariness I had imagined.

Medina Of Fez ???????? Morocco Best City - Travel & Discover
Founded in the 9th century and home to the oldest university in the world, Fez reached its height in the 13th–14th centuries under the Marinids, when it replaced Marrakesh as the capital of the kingdom. The urban fabric and the principal monuments in the medina – madrasas, fondouks, palaces, residences, mosques and fountains - date from this period. Although the political capital of Morocco was transferred to Rabat in 1912, Fez has retained its status as the country's cultural and spiritual centre.

Fes (fez) Morocco. The old medina.walking through a maze
EXPLORING exotic FEZ (or Fes), Morocco - a Medina tour
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go for a quick tour around Fez in beautiful Morocco accompanied with Moroccan music. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Fes is a northeastern Moroccan city often referred to as the country’s cultural capital. It’s primarily known for its Fes El Bali walled medina, with medieval Marinid architecture, vibrant souks and old-world atmosphere. The medina is home to religious schools such as the 14th-century Bou Inania and Al Attarine, both decorated with elaborate cedar carvings and ornate tile work.
Morocco, a North African country bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, is distinguished by its Berber, Arabian and European cultural influences. Marrakesh’s medina, a mazelike medieval quarter, offers entertainment in its Djemaa el-Fna square and souks (marketplaces) selling ceramics, jewelry and metal lanterns. The capital Rabat’s Kasbah of the Udayas is a 12th-century royal fort overlooking the water.
FES MOROCCO - INSIDE THE MEDINA - VLOG
FÈS is the religious and cultural center of Morocco. In this vlog, we go inside the medina and tour the city life, view the architecture, and explore the artisan crafts that made Fes famous around the world.
1. Muslim Cemetery
The best view of the Medina of Fes is from the Muslim Cemetery which sits atop a hill.
2. Fes el Bali - The oldest walled part of Fes Morocco founded between 789 and 808 AD. It has Andalusian design as opposed to Berber influence and it is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Medina is home to over 2,000 mosques and 80,000 people. It is filled with food shops, crafts, and artisans. The medina is a car-free city and the main method of transportation is by donkey.
3. University of Al-Karaouine - The oldest university in the world established in 859 AD. We see the stunning traditional Moroccan architecture including the marble floor, tile walls, fountain, open ceiling and cedar wood work.
4. Moroccan rug - One of the most famous artisan works is the carpets, which are hand woven by women. Some have traditional Berber designs while others are woven with the Fes blue color.
5. Nejjarine Museum - We visit the museum of wood arts and crafts, a beautiful historic building with a rooftop view of Fes.
► ►
6. Tannery of Fes - We get a tour of the tanneries in Fes, a huge outdoor leather making processing center where artisans work to color and tan the leather to create handbags, jackets, shoes, and more.

Fés Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Fés in Morocco.
In the early and late Middle Ages, the royal city of Fez was the capital of Morocco. Where two of the most important trading routes from the Sahara to the Mediterranean crossed, a follower of the prophet Mohammed established Fez in a delightful river valley.
In the old walled town of Medina in which Muslim belief is omnipresent, everyone lives within easy listening distance of a minaret and also the relentless babble of traders and craftsmen.
Through the old city gate of Bab Boujeloud, you enter the exotic world of the Arab-Islam Middle Ages. The beautifully restored inner courtyards of the city palaces show the splendor of Spanish-Moorish architecture. Arabesque wall decorations and floor mosaics represent 1,200 years of Muslim belief and reflect the cultural prosperity enjoyed by this royal city, whose historic past today intermingles with aromatic aromas, a wealth of craftsmen, and the smell of dough-cake as baked in the time of Roman occupation.

Things you can buy in Fez Medina- Guided Tour | Morocco Vlog 2/8
Streets of madina and people of Fez and everything it is known for i.e leather, carpet, wool and hammam.
Fez or Fes (Arabic: فاس faːs, Berber: ⴼⴰⵙ faːs, French: Fès) is a city in northern inland Morocco and the capital of the Fas-Meknas administrative region. It is the second largest city in Morocco after Casablanca, with a population of 1.4 million (2014). Located to the northeast of Atlas Mountains, Fez is situated at the crossroad of the important cities of all regions; 206 km (128 mi) from Tangier to the northwest, 246 km (153 mi) from Casablanca, 169 km (105 mi) from Rabat to the west, and 387 km (240 mi) from Marrakesh to the southwest which leads to the Trans-Saharan trade route. It is surrounded by the high grounds, and the old city is penetrated by the River of Fez flowing from the west to east.

BOOKER TRAVELS - Morocco: Made It To Fes
Fes is one of the most incredible places on earth.
Founded in 780, it’s known for being the best-preserved ancient city in the Arab world. Traveling here is like taking a trip back in time. Walking through the narrow streets is a journey beyond my senses.
