4K City Walks: Cullen to Findlater Castle - Scottish Coastal Walking Treadmill video is new and different for me.
I'm trying a different kind of virtual walk this time. I do a lot of nature walks but I haven't filmed any of them. This is a treadmill trails walk along the Moray Coastal Trail to Findlater Castle. It's a 16th century castle ruin perched on a cliff above a rocky sea. The day was rainy and I did my best to keep the rain off the lens. The walk is partially on paved and gravel path but mostly single track through tall grass and over Sunnyside beach which is small but secluded.
Please let me know if you like this type of virtual hike or not. I suspect those looking for a treadmill virtual walk will like it and others more interested in travel and cities might not.

Findlater Castle:
Findlater Castle is the old seat of the Earls of Findlater and Seafield, sitting on a 50-foot (15 m)-high cliff overlooking the Moray Firth on the coast of Banff and Buchan, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It lies about 15 km (9.3 mi) west of Banff, near the village of Sandend, between Cullen and Portsoy. The cliffs here contain quartz; the name Findlater is derived not from Norse as earlier stated here, but from the Scots Gaelic words fionn (white) and leitir (cliff or steep slope). The first historical reference to the castle is from 1246. King Alexander III of Scotland repaired this castle in the 1260s in preparation for an invasion by King Haakon IV of Norway. The Vikings took and held the castle for some time. The castle remains that are still there are from the 14th-century rebuilding, when the castle was redesigned based on the Roslyn Castle model.

Moray Coastal Trail:
The Moray Coastal Trail is a long distance path in north-east Scotland that along the coastline of the Moray council area. The route, which is 72 km long, runs between Forres and Cullen. It is designated as one of Scotland's Great Trails by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), and connects with two further Great Trails: the Speyside Way at Spey Bay, and the Dava Way at Forres. The Moray Coast Trail can be combined with sections of these two routes to form a 153 km circular route known as the Moray Way, and also forms part of the North Sea Trail. The trail is primarily intended for walkers, but many sections are also suitable for cycling and horseriding. An alternative route for cycling, the Moray Coast Ride, shares some sections of path with the Moray Coast Trail, and forms part of the National Cycle Network's Route 1. About 23,000 people use the path every year, of whom about 1,000 complete the entire route.
SNH recommend that the trail be walked west to east (from Forres to Cullen), due to the direction of the prevailing winds. In this direction the following settlements are passed: Forres, Kinloss, Findhorn, Burghead, Hopeman, Lossiemouth, Spey Bay, Portgordon, Buckie, Findochty, Portknockie, Cullen. Places of note along the route are the Covesea Skerries Lighthouse and Bow Fiddle Rock.

Cullen is a village and former royal burgh in Moray, Scotland, on the North Sea coast 20 miles east of Elgin. The village now has a population of 1,327. Cullen is noticeably busier in summer than winter due to the number of holiday homes owned. The organs of the wife of Robert the Bruce are said to have been buried in its old kirk (church) after her death in Cullen Castle. Robert the Bruce made an annual payment to the village in gratitude for the treatment of his wife's body and its return south for burial. A recent non-payment of this sum by the government was challenged and settled to the village's favour.
The village is noted for Cullen Skink (a traditional soup made from smoked haddock, milk, potato and onion) and its former railway bridges, two of which are now part of the national cycle network. These bridges were required, at considerable cost, due to resistance to the railway line being routed any closer to Cullen House. The most westerly (and by far the longest) viaduct is highly photogenic, and often features in tourist guides and Scottish calendars. Near Cullen is the peak Bin Hill, visible from some distance, such as from Longman Hill.
Cullen has a very long history, and a remarkably well-documented one thanks to the survival of a number of sources. These are summarised in two key books: the Annals of Cullen by W Crammond (1904) and the Church Annals of Cullen by W Robertson (1938). The first deals primarily with the civil governance and the latter with church governance up to the disruption. Cullen received royal burgh status between 1153 and 1214 AD during the reigns of Malcolm IV and William I. It is also known to have received a charter in 1455 AD from James II. The burgh was abolished in 1975 by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973.
Cullen is noticeably busier in summer than winter due to the number of holiday homes owned. The village has an impressive beach and golf course, and the Crannoch wood which offers good views of the area. The 1,086 feet (331 m) Bin Hill or Bin of Cullen is a nearby hill with an associated footpath.
Cullen was the setting for Doris Davidson's romantic novel The Three Kings, named after the three rocks at the east end of Cullen beach. The local writer Simon Farquhar set his first two plays, Candy Floss Kisses and Elevenses with Twiggy, in the village and they were produced by BBC Radio 4. Samuel Johnson had less passion for Cullen. According to James Boswell, writing in The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, the pair considered that Cullen had a comfortable appearance, though but a very small town, and the houses mostly poor buildings. Dr Johnson was also disgusted by the sight of the dried haddocks broiled that they were served for breakfast there and refused to eat them. Of course given the general views aired so freely by Dr Johnson this is mild indeed.

Dovecotes may be free standing structures in a variety of shapes, or built into the end of a house or barn. They generally contain pigeonholes for the birds to nest. We took a road (and ferry) trip north to Orkney Islands and I was able to get three walks in. This first one is along the northern coast near the Brough of Birsay. We saw arctic terns and gulls and the Whale Bone as well as cows and sheep and STUNNING views. The wind was strong but hopefully not to bad with the audio. We were staying in our Vacation Rental accommodation nearby. At this far north lattitude, the sun is out until almost midnight but it makes the colors so vibrant. I hope you enjoy this walking treadmill video workout and virtual tour of this little section of coast.

The Old Norse name for the island was Byrgisey which means fort island, and gives the parish its name. Brough, indeed, means fort.

Sea Kayaking the North East Passage - Portsoy - Findlater Castle.
What a fabulous day, 29th September remember, this was just a total gamble, had no idea what it would be like. A big thank you to Alice and Norman from Sandend, who were very welcoming, and showed me everything there was to know about their home patch, they really are Salt of the Earth types. Check out the sunset at the end, and that very last image was taken on my phone! Not baad, not baad. Had endless problems doing this video, and I've missed some music out in the middle, so a minute is in silence - do not adjust your set. I haven't forgot about the Stealthy Kamper update, still not finished it yet, my life hasn't been my own lately, but like British Rail, I'll get there, eventually.

English Forest & Castle Chill Video 4K near Carlisle
Hi I visited Miltonrigg woods and Thrlwall castle the other day in Cumbria. Miltonrigg Woods is classed as ancient woodland and is at least 400 years old in parts so I thought I would share it with you. Thirlwall castle is nearby and I took a trip there later in the day. Thirlwall Castle is a 12th Century castle built using stone from The Roman Hadrians Wall nearby built nearly 2,000 years ago. I messed about getting some shots using the gopro hero 7 black and my mavic pro and put one of the most chilled reflective songs I know over it. Let me know what you think, good and bad thanks!

Portsoy Outdoor swimming pool was constructed with considerable help from volunteers, it was completed and opened 1936. The sea-water swimming pool was made by building a concrete wall parallel to the coast and joining two rock spurs together. Here on the rocky east coast it was comparatively easy to enclose a rock pool, which could be filled and refreshed by the tides.
In the mid 1980s due to continual movement of the tides through parts of the rock surrounds, a scouring effect meant the pool emptied during low tides making it futile for swimming. The local people were hopeful that Aberdeenshire council would undertake the full repair of the pool which was viewed as a very popular facility for the town and was one of the safest bathing areas along the Moray Firth coast. The Council balked at the costs involved, and as those who controlled the finances had the last word, pool after pool closed its doors.along the Moray Coast.

16th August 2019
I set off for Cullen Harbour for a solo night. Lindsay will join me tomorrow. I arrived and got partly set up. Then a bunch of vans (7) turned up and filled the car park. I was chatting with a local about my antennas at the time. I told him it was time for me to leave and that the mob was not for me. He agreed saying they did not mind the odd van but when they turn up mob handed it gets noses out of joint. It only took me 5 minutes to get on the road. I decided on Portsoy Pool as Lindsay did not know the alternative spot in Cullen. Nobody else there, bliss. I set up and settled in. I spent the afternoon watching Minke Whales and Dolphins. I was joined later by a group of tent campers who are along the trail a little way. What started as a bad day has turned into a great day.
17th August 2019
Windy but warm today. I spent most the day on the radio or dolphin watching. I made a few contacts on HF but in the wrong spot for VHF contacts. There are plenty of fishermen about hauling out mackerel but no dolphins or Whales today. The overnight campers left early but still a few people about. Birds were fewer as well; I guess the fish have moved on to other areas. Craig brought Lindsay after work, he did not stay long. Lindsay Settled in with a cuppa then had a wander around the spot taking photos. Soon time to settle in for a chilled evening watching the sea and gannets.
18th August 2019
I listened to the HF news today. VHF blocked by surrounding cliffs. No dolphins or whales today either but plenty of mackerel for the fisherman. Weather warm and windy, with showers, some very heavy. Lindsay walked and wombled again. We spent most of the day chilling and Lindsay Chatted to some locals. Then it was time to head for home.

Findlater Castle from the air - Water marked
This beautiful old ruin is located on a tiny outcrop of cliff jutting out into the moray firth and was even occupied by the vikings. A stunning subject which warranted a closer look by drone. Video link is on the MEDIA page.

Portsoy harbour is one of those hidden gems that you've probably never heard of, but if you get the chance to explore this quiet section of Aberdeenshire you really should take the time to check it out.
Nestled in a small bay on the picturesque Moray coast between Cullen and Banff, Portsoy is a small fishing village that time appears to have forgotten about.
Quaint cottages line the roads that wind their way down to the sea-front, and it's here in this 17th-century harbour that you'll find some of the warehouses that once stored the Portsoy marble jewellery that the village was once famous for. #Portsoy #PortsoyHarbour
