Hamburg, Fischmarkt - Germany 4K Travel Channel
The Hamburg Fish Market attracts both locals and visitors from around the world to St. Pauli every Sunday. Hamburg's traditional market, which is also known as the Altona fish market, already exists since 1703 and is well known far beyond the borders of Hamburg.
Besides fish, fruit and flowers, diverse goods are sold at the booths. A main attraction are the Barker, loudly offering their goods. They are pleased when visitors haggle with them and some visitor has made a bargain or has returned home with free flowers. The Hamburg Fish Market is not only a tourist attraction, but it also fulfills an important social and economic component for the local population and the fishmonger.
The historic fish auction hall forms the centre of the market. Here, every sunday from 5.30 a.m. till 12.00 noon you can listen to live music. During our visit, the band McCreams spreaded good mood and excellent atmosphere with their musical performance.
Thanks to an initiative of Hamburger citizens the historic fish auction hall was preserved from decay. In 1984 hall received a Europa Nostra Diploma of the European De - Koster Foundation; thus being the only monument in Hamburg which received this diploma.
Even if you have to get up early a visit to the fish market should not be missed. During the summer, the Hamburg Fish Market takes place every Sunday 5 a.m to 9.30 a.m. In winter ( November to March) it will not be open until at 7 a.m.

Hamburg Fish Market (Fischmarkt), Germany - music and dancing
A legend and a must-see for all visitors to Hamburg: Since 1703, pretty much everything that is not bolted down has been traded here at Hamburg's most traditional market. From dusty porcelain jugs to a chirpy family of ducks, you can find just about anything in the shadow of the 100-year old fish auction hall.
Revellers from the Reeperbahn stand on the water's edge with fish sandwiches and coffee in hand waiting for their spirits to be revived, others guard the loot they have purchased - for some the day is just beginning, while for others yesterday has not ended! Brunch in the historic fish auction hall with jazz, skiffle or country and western music is a special highlight.

.Hamburg, a major port city in northern Germany, is connected to the North Sea by the Elbe River. It's crossed by hundreds of canals, and also contains large areas of parkland. Near its core, Inner Alster lake is dotted with boats and surrounded by cafes. The city's central Jungfernstieg boulevard connects the Neustadt (new town) with the Altstadt (old town), home to landmarks like 18th-century St. Michael’s Church.
Germany is a Western European country with a landscape of forests, rivers, mountain ranges and North Sea beaches. It has over 2 millennia of history. The town hall in Altona is not only the seat of the district office Altona, the splendor of the Neoclassic 'also has a lot to offer: Among other things, can be married in this magnificent building, in summer in the courtyard very popular open-air cinema performances take place and at irregular intervals exhibitions are shown.
The district office of Altona has been located in the white splendor building on the Platz der Republik since the end of the Second World War. The collegiate hall is mainly used for the plenary sessions of the district assembly of the Hamburg district and changing exhibitions. In the south wing of the town hall, opened in 1898, there is also the registry office. In the canteen , not only can eaten, many unknown artists present their work there. During the summer months, the best films of the season are shown at the Zeise Open Air Cinema in the courtyard of the town hall.
In front of the north side of the building stands an equestrian statue of Wilhelm I created by Gustav Eberlein since 1898. It is known as the Altona Kaiser Wilhelm Monument. At the official unveiling on the 18th of June of the same year, the imperial couple were in person. Originally, a Bismarck monument was planned here. In the vicinity of the town hall are the Christian Church , the Elbe , the Dockland and the Jewish cemetery Altona . The Hamburg fish market including fish auction hall is also only a short walk away.
Initially inaugurated as railway station of the Altona-Kieler Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in 1844, the railway line was the first under Danish sovereignty. Altona was under Danish command from 1640 to 1864. On August 23, 1664 Altona was awarded by the King of Denmark, Frederick III., The town charter and the now more independent Altona grew rapidly. In 1803, the neighboring city of Hamburg with 24,000 inhabitants was even the second largest city in Denmark - behind Copenhagen. Erected in the mid-19th century train station could not meet that has now become necessary capacities and so a few hundred meters north was built at about the site of the current station, the Altona Central Station. The then became functionless construction on the Republic Square was then rebuilt to the city hall.
The Altona town hall, which was rebuilt in the Wilhelminian style, was first realized as a classicist building by the architect Emil Brandt. In the period from 1898 to 1938 it served the city administration. The collegiate hall for the city council meeting in the north wing and a service apartment for the mayor in the east wing were created alongside other premises. The collegiate hall was embellished in 1900 by several paintings by the artist Ludwig Dettman, which refer to the Danish background of Altona. In the following decades, the building was converted into a neoclassical building. Due to the Greater Hamburg Act in 1937/38 Altona was incorporated into the Hamburg city and lost thereby its independence.

Places to see in ( Kiel - Germany )
Ahoy, Kiel! This Olympic city is a hub for international sailing events, including the renowned Kiel Week, held every June since 1882. Originally a Viking settlement, the city has caught up with the times, providing visitors with a plethora of dining, shopping and entertainment options. Meander through lush botanical gardens and marvel at the historic ships bobbing gently in the harbor.
Kiel is the capital and most populous city in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, with a population of 240,832. Kiel lies approximately 90 kilometers north of Hamburg

Besides being world's largest sailing event the Kieler Woche is one of Germany's largest festivals. Apart from the sailing, the entire center of the town is transformed into an international food and craft fair, with regular big name performers appearing nightly. If you intend to visit Kiel during this time book your hotel well ahead and bear in mind that the waterfront and major parts of downtown will be inaccessible for cars.
Information on events is posted all over town and through a free magazine which will be distributed about a month before the event. Events include entertainment for kids during daytime throughout the entire week and lots of open air concerts. Most concerts end around 11PM and nightlife moves to indoor venues as well as the Eggerstedtstrasse.
Aside from an abundance of food and drink outlets along the streets the International Market on the Rathausmarkt is the place to go for food and drink. A few dozen countries operate booths on the open-air market offering food and drinks from the particular countries. The Kieler Nachrichten newspaper runs a special about food on the market in its Saturday edition. If you cannot decide from the endless choices head over to the Scandinavian area or to wherever crowds are gathering.
Also famous is in Laboe (part of Kiel on the east-side of the fjord) the only surviving Type VII-C U-boat from World War 2 at the shore and the Marine-Ehrenmal (Navy Memorial) with a high tower.
Kiel is famous for the Nord-Ostsee Kanal (Kiel Canal), the world's busiest canal. It is possible to walk or cycle for almost the entire length (99km) directly along the canal from Kiel to Brunsbüttel (estuary of the Elbe, on the North Sea Coast), staying overnight in the town of Rendsburg.
Kiel is the home of the German Baltic fleet, and it is common to see all types of German warships and submarines in the Förde, including the training sailing vessel Gorch Fock.
Cultural diversity is offered by the museen am meer association. See below for more information.
The following museums are part of the museen am meer association:
Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities): Face to face with antiquity: collection of Greek vases as well as casts of important Roman and Greek sculptures unique to Schleswig-Holstein.
Aquarium GEOMAR: From Baltic Sea herring to tropical seahorse: local and exotic sea creatures presented in aquariums that simulate their natural habitats, outdoor seal pool and public feeding of the seals.
Kunsthalle zu Kiel (Museum of Fine Arts): Art from the Dürer era through to the present day: permanent collection spanning all artistic genres, including works by Repin, Nolde and Richter, as well as special exhibitions on specific topics and artists.
Medizin- & Pharmaziehistorische Sammlung (Museum of Medical & Pharmaceutical History): Insight into the history of medicine and pharmaceuticals: exhibition of historic instruments, collection of pathology specimens, interior of an old pharmacy and a doctor’s office.
Schifffahrtsmuseum (City and Maritime Museum): In the former fish auction hall, built in 1910: permanent exhibition on Kiel’s maritime history, pier with historic ships.
Stadtgalerie Kiel (Kiel Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Arts): New contemporary art: exhibitions of regional and international contemporary art, art from the Baltic Sea region, permanent exhibition of the works of the Expressionist artist Heinrich Ehmsen.
Stadtmuseum Warleberger Hof (City and Maritime Museum): Traces of Kiel history: permanent exhibition on the early history of the city and exhibitions on social and cultural history.
Zoologisches Museum (Zoological Museum Kiel): Experience marine and evolutionary research at first hand: exciting display on the subject of marine science and research, Germany’s most extensive exhibition of whale species, presentation of the origins of zoology in Kiel.

Kiel is a port city on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast. In the old town, the rebuilt, medieval St. Nikolai Church hosts classical concerts. Holstenstrasse and Dänische Strasse are streets lined with shops. Along the Kiel Fjord, the Maritime Museum displays model ships and nautical instruments in a former fish auction hall. Cruise ships dock at the Ostseekai Terminal in Germania Harbor.
Some locals admit that Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, has a city centre that's grottenhässlich (ugly as sin). And unfortunately it is true; it was obliterated during WWII by bombing raids on its U-boat pens and then rapidly rebuilt. Today, it is a series of charmless indoor malls linked by pedestrian bridges. However, Kiel's grand harbour continues on as it has for centuries and this, along with the city's museums, should be the focus of your visit. Huge ferries transport millions of passengers to and from Scandinavia, while summer sees locals strolling the long waterfront promenade.
Kiel is a maritime city and has been for a long time, it remains one of Germany main passenger ports (besides Travemünde and Rostock) and as the Baltic endpoint of the Kiel Canal plays an important role in shipping. The beginning of the end of German monarchism happened here when in 1918 the admirals wanted the fleet to sail out for one last glorious but militarily pointless battle and the sailors told their superiors where they could shove that idea, ultimately culminating in revolution and the formation of Soviets.
During the Second World War, Kiel was severely bombed, because of its submarine-producing shipyard. Both civil and military ships are being built in Kiel nowadays and the tall cranes dominate the eastern shore of the Förde (fjord).
The bombing destroyed almost all historic buildings in Kiel; even the older looking buildings were built after WW2. So, if you come to the Kieler Schloss (Kieler Castle) don't be disappointed. There isn't much left of the original building. During the rebuilding after WW2, mostly modern architecture was used.
