Mahi Fishing In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
***Full report available at
This November my wife Lauren and I are staying in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where I will be working and fishing for mahi mahi and whatever else I can find. In this video we are fishing on a local panga boat, in the Los Arcos area of Banderas Bay, Puerto Vallarta, for mahi mahi (also called dorado or dolphinfish).
One major benefit of the internet is that it allows me to carryon my day-to-day business activities from anywhere in the world without issue. In fact I sometimes find it easier to work abroad than at home, and my productivity will oftentimes increase. For the next couple of weeks I will be blogging from Mexico, where it is currently 80 degrees, sunny and flat calm.

Deep Sea Fishing, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
During my family's reunion in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. A few of us decided to charter a fishing boat to take us out on Banderas Bay to do some fishing. After about 3 hours, we finally got a bite. We all helped reel in a huge Crevalle Jack fish. Not what we were hoping for, but at least it was something. It took about 20 minutes to finally reel it in all the way and get it on the boat. We finished the day with only one fish but it was more than enough for a huge meal for the whole family.

Fishing Jack Crevalle in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: Gypsy Travel
So, I won’t be keeping this short as there is so much to tell about this journey. Up until a few weeks ago I couldn’t even bring myself to think about the half terabyte of film I had stored on my external drives, in fact I couldn’t even think about the trip itself. Big awkwardness and some awful memories surrounding the 7 days in Puerto Vallarta with Danny Gomez, Arturo Lopez, Mike Crawford and Blake LaFleur. In a way this particular blog is therapeutic for me and probably should have been written a while ago. Some of you will remember me writing about an illness that I had come down with during the beginning of February. A festering, nagging chest cold that would not release its’ grip until mid March, roughly 2 weeks before my trip to PV. Because this strain of bullshit was playing me an extended remix from DJ Shutdown, I must’ve lost accuracy with my percentage scale from being down in the 40% range for so long, I definitely needed to recalibrate. Upon departure I felt like 90%, this was actually a false reading as I was really in the 60’s, maybe lower….
As you will see in the pictures here and video @fishgypsy, the first day was amazing. A Jack Crevalle warm-up beat-down, preparing for the next 6 days of Jack Crevalle main-event beat down. This species of reef dwelling thugs are scoffed at in many places in their range, but this aptly named “Mexican GT” is an absolute riot to fish for. Angry mobs of Jacks numbering in the thousands form mosh pits while trashing their forage in a well planned assault. This display is something that has to be seen in person, the relationship between predator and prey, the life and death struggle that happens all around you over and over again, naturally. But, I think these gangsters like being caught on artificial lures just so they can attempt escape. After all, only the notorious criminals worth remembering elude incarceration by fighting their way out of captivity, right? Normally the ideal cast is placed in front of the rioting mob, ahead of their direction of travel, but this was tried numerous times with no hookups. Previous experience reminded us that casting to “The Middle” is a no no. This disruption definitely turns the school downward, those of us from freshwater know this isn’t particularly a good thing. Early in the morning during the first casting session I decided to go to the middle. Part frustration, part curiosity, but mainly because Blake’s verbal assault from the back of the boat was getting downright savage. Goal: Snag one and shut him down. The next school I saw, I put that Purple Tuna Jack Fin directly in the epicenter. Even before it contacted the water the mob was spazzing out, as soon as it hit the water I twitched hard while reeling it quickly away, this resulted in what would be the trigger for several hours of hookups. After seeing this develop into pattern I realized that the bites were coming from fish far below the surface, that this commotion of fish fleeing the scene above created a sort of false feeding frenzy and raised fish up that assumed my lure was the remnants of the buffet. Later in the day the bite became more classic Jack Crevalle, chasing to the boat and taking lures at your feet, coming from nowhere to eat a blind casted 5 of Diamonds and taking every opportunity to bust your tackle.
I’ve always wanted to do this.
“To be continued….”
Rock Fishing From Shore In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Here in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, there is a 100 yard rock outcropping from which I can cast poppers into depths of more than 30 feet of turqoise water.
Being able to cast lures into water that deep is a really unique opportunity. For example on Cape Cod, most of the time when fishing from shore I casting lures into less than 10 feet of water.
There is no telling what species of fish one might encounter when fishing a spot surrounded by such deep water! In fact we caught mani while fishing in a boat not far offshore at all from where this rocky outcropping is located.
I discovered the rocky outcropping a few days ago, and I feel it holds great potential. The video below was filmed during my first trip at this spot. I am casting a TA Bomb Popper when a hard fighting jack crevalle smashes it right on the surface!
Timestamps:
0:10 - walking out to the spot
3:25 - underwater footage of fish at similar rocky outcroppings
5:06 - talking about the lure, ANGLR etc.
6:02 - hooked up!
7:48 - trying to land the fish
9:05 - the release

Puerto Vallarta fishing report December 2018
The Crew on the 35 Cabo caught a huge Black Marlin on the 5th which is great for this late in the year but I think that will be the last big Blue or Black Marlin for the 2018 fishing season. We are still catching Sailfish, Dorado, Tuna and we found some Wahoo outside of Corbetena as well last week. Inside Banderas Bay we have catching Small Dorado Jack Crevalle, and Skip Jacks. We have been fishing with mostly live bait trolling and drifting. It has been another great year living and fishing in Puerto Vallarta. PV Sportfishing would like to thank everyone that came
to Puerto Vallarta on vacation and especially want to thank everyone that came fishing with us.

Roosterfish Tag and Release at Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
In this episode, we joined the Snook Mafia boys on an inshore fishing off the southern coast of the town of Puerto Vallarta. Carlos Sanchez was our guide for the day as we fished for Roosters to tag and release. We had in our arsenal various gear from Blackhole Rods, IRT Reels, and of course Prohunter Rods and lures. The day started off slow (we blamed it on the less than ideal moon phase. :)), but as the day warmed up we encountered many small groups of baby Roosters with the occasional teen. Lure of the day was the Prohunter Toucan popper. This 140mm / 55g popper with the enlarged cup casts extremely well and creates a big disturbance when being chugged through the water, eliciting some pretty spectacular blowups.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Spin Cast Fishing - Popping (Day 2) Episode 7
Day Two - Puerto Vallarta, MX
The fishing turned for the better for one of the boats that went South on intel from a local. Two boats went to the far north and tried to make something happen, what happened wasn’t epic on the catch rate side of the equation, but went up a notch with a full load of Tecate and Black Marlin salad. The scenery at both locations made for a nice treat, casting against high banks and crashing surf for the first time was something I’ll never forget. For those who wanted quantities of bent rods, South was the answer, for those that went South and fought large Jack Crevalle, their sights were set on offshore yellowfin for day three.
My first day fishing with Danny Gomez, something I’ve waited a long time to do, was as expected. A high quality individual who like many fishermen wanted to forge his own bite where his instincts told him to go. When it was obvious the fish weren’t there in numbers, it took no convincing to head offshore and make a few baits for a large dogtooth snapper. An unknown tried to eat the skipjack and didn’t have the authority to fully inhale the bait. The Hail Mary we threw didn’t connect, and off came the Braid belt. Towards the end of day, I couldn’t help but feel my anxiety build, and moderate frustration set in. Two days of casting yielded a small Jack and one Needlefish. The second Northbound boat had the same experience.
The dial in was complete, South was optimal for those of us who needed, badly, the battles we were sure to hear about during cocktail hours. You’ll hear talk of “angler priority” in upcoming videos, several of us were deemed righteous for this tag, even though my instinct told me to go offshore and target tuna on day three, my Thorne Brothers Custom Temple Reef looked so fresh after its bath that I couldn’t deny its needs and my wants.
The division between tourists and fishermen is something I’d like to write on. Normally the line is crystal clear between vacation fishing for the experience and fishing to fulfill a void that rests in every fishermen’s soul, that bite, ripping drag, a fast release and repeat. The beauty of Banderas bay blurred this line, with the help of several cervezas, and put the experience in perspective for me. The perception of a trip like this for a tourist is to arrive day one and catch fish all day. We know this isn’t going to happen, not by a long shot, but something in all of us wants it so badly that it brushes closer to an expectation than it should. I’m slightly embarrassed that I fell into this mind trap, I forced myself to let go for day three, up next, things turned around.
