Florida Keys & Key West: Close To Perfect
Key West is home to many treasures. Longtime resident Mel Fisher, a legendary treasure hunter who died in 1998, recovered approximately $450 million in gold and silver from the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, a 17th-century Spanish galleon that sank 35 miles southwest of Key West. Fisher, who spent 16 years searching for the shipwreck, established the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum where visitors can view and learn about the riches of the Atocha and other area shipwrecks including the galleon Santa Margarita.
The colorful history of Key West incorporates shipwreck treasures and artifacts, renowned artists, literary legends, a cigar-making heyday and a vibrant past as a bustling seaport. The area's historic and cultural richness is preserved, spotlighted and celebrated in the island city's many museums.
At day's end in Key West, crowds gather at Mallory Square to experience the nightly sunset celebration, a tradition that locals share with visitors. While musicians, jugglers, acrobats and other performers provide entertainment, the sun sinks slowly below the horizon as sunset cruise boats sail by in Key West Harbor.
The nightlife in Key West can be lively and exciting, as fun-seekers' evening jaunts mean sampling numerous restaurants, taverns and entertainment offerings.

A Week in the Florida Keys - Ancient History
I decided to upload some old footage from many many years ago. Back in the day, HD video cameras were commercial grade only and the standard definition cameras had no digital stabilization. This is my only excuse for the retro-looking video represented here. This video tells the story of our trip to the Keys with friends Dave & Sue. Sue, while not camera shy, didn't want to be seen on YouTube so she's been edited out :-) I found a stack of old DVDs that I had made 9 or more years ago and I'm going to try and re-edit them and relive some very old memories on the channel. Hope you enjoy them :-)
Flagler's Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad: 100th Anniversary
On Jan. 22, 2012, the Florida Keys & Key West celebrated the centennial anniversary of the completion of Henry Flagler's Over-Sea Railroad with a parade, exhibit opening and other festivities — exactly 100 years after the first train arrived in Key West from the Florida mainland. The centennial parade ended at the Key West Museum of Art & History at the Custom House, where crowds applauded as a Henry Flagler re-enactor delivered portions of a speech the railroad baron gave 100 years ago. The night before, Keys residents in Flagler-era costumes gathered for a gala ball at the Casa Marina, an oceanfront resort conceived by Flagler in the early 1900s and built to accommodate the Over-Sea Railroad's elite passengers.

US court rules shipwreck found off Florida coast is French flagship - 247 news
US,court,Shipwreck,Florida,belongs,France
A U.S. federal court has ruled that a shipwreck off Florida's Atlantic coast belongs to France and not the salvage company that found it in 2016.A report by The Florida Times-Union says a U.S. magistrate ruled last week that the wreck was la Trinite, the flagship of French captain Jean Ribault, making the vessel France's protected property, a decision backed by the state of Florida.As such, private companies are now prohibited from salvaging the ship, which will help to preserve the artifacts within. The court case was initiated after salvage company Global Marine Exploration discovered the wreck in 2016, announcing that it had found three ornate bronze cannons and a marble monument featuring France's fleur-de-lis coat of arms, among other artifacts inside.In the company's newsletter, it stated that, 'Initial findings suggested the possibility that these were part of the remains of the lost French ships commanded by Jean Ribault in 1565, but subsequent physical evidence and historical research by the GME archaeological team have ruled out that possibility, the identity of the sunken vessel or vessels may never be known.' This sentiment appears to be the basis of the salvage's company's court argument, which was that it had the rights to claim the shipwreck because its identity couldn't be established.France, however, argued that the wrecked ship was part of its Royal Navy and, in fact, was Ribault's flagship. In 1565, Ribault had been on his way to Florida, aiming to reinforce a struggling French colony in what is now Jacksonville, Florida, when a hurricane wrecked his fleet, giving rival Spanish troops the opportunity to seize Fort Caroline and affirm Spain's claim to Florida. The U.S. Sunken Military Act states that any ship that sailed for another country still belongs to that country. Share this article Share In the 2016 newsletter, the salvage company's chief archaeologist, Jim Sinclair, said, 'the historical and archaeological significance of these artifacts cannot be overstated.'The salvage company speculated at that time that the monument found 'could have possibly been connected to the first French attempts at new world colonization, the Protestant Huguenots and the founding of Spanish Florida at St. Augustine.' The Florida Times-Union reported that records indicated that Ribault's flagship, la Trinite, had been carrying monuments carved with fleur-de-lis and meant to be used when claiming territory in France's name on the southeast coast of the now United States. An attorney representing the French government said that it is unlikely the country will begin salvaging the ship immediately. 'It’s premature to discuss timing of the next steps,' attorney James A. Goold told the newspaper, adding that France will be evaluating what to do about the wreck. Local historians were reportedly very excited about the court's ruling and the artifacts contained within the wreck. 'This is the most important shipwreck ev

SUMMARY
=======
Biscayne National Park is an American national park located in southern Florida, south of Miami. The park preserves Biscayne Bay and its offshore barrier reefs. Ninety-five percent of the park is water, and the shore of the bay is the location of an extensive mangrove forest. The park covers 172,971 acres (270.3 sq mi; 700.0 km2) and includes Elliott Key, the park's largest island and first of the true Florida Keys, formed from fossilized coral reef. The islands farther north in the park are transitional islands of coral and sand. The offshore portion of the park includes the northernmost region of the Florida Reef, one of the largest coral reefs in the world.
Biscayne National Park protects four distinct ecosystems: the shoreline mangrove swamp, the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay, the coral limestone keys and the offshore Florida Reef. The shoreline swamps of the mainland and island margins provide a nursery for larval and juvenile fish, molluscs and crustaceans. The bay waters harbor immature and adult fish, seagrass beds, sponges, soft corals, and manatees. The keys are covered with tropical vegetation including endangered cacti and palms, and their beaches provide nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles. Offshore reefs and waters harbor more than 200 species of fish, pelagic birds, whales and hard corals. Sixteen endangered species including Schaus' swallowtail butterflies, smalltooth sawfish, manatees, and green and hawksbill sea turtles may be observed in the park. Biscayne also has a small population of threatened American crocodiles and a few American alligators.
The people of the Glades culture inhabited the Biscayne Bay region as early as 10,000 years ago before rising sea levels filled the bay. The Tequesta people occupied the islands and shoreline from about 4,000 years before the present to the 16th century, when the Spanish took possession of Florida. Reefs claimed ships from Spanish times through the 20th century, with more than 40 documented wrecks within the park's boundaries. While the park's islands were farmed during the 19th and early 20th centuries, their rocky soil and periodic hurricanes made agriculture difficult to sustain. In the early 20th century the islands became secluded destinations for wealthy Miamians who built getaway homes and social clubs. Mark C. Honeywell's guesthouse on Boca Chita Key was the area's most elaborate private retreat, featuring a mock lighthouse. The Cocolobo Cay Club was at various times owned by Miami developer Carl G. Fisher, yachtsman Garfield Wood, and President Richard Nixon's friend Bebe Rebozo, and was visited by four United States presidents. The amphibious community of Stiltsville was established in the 1930s in the shoals of northern Biscayne Bay, taking advantage of its remoteness from land to offer offshore gambling and alcohol during Prohibition. Following the Cuban Revolution of 1959, Elliott Key was used as a training ground for infiltrators into Fidel Castro's Cuba by the Central Intelligence Agency and by Cuban exile groups.
Originally proposed for inclusion in Everglades National Park, Biscayne Bay was removed from the proposed park to ensure Everglades' establishment. The area remained undeveloped until the 1960 ...
