Folkestone Harbour and Seafront
Folkestone Harbour and Seafront Development Company is leading a comprehensive project designed to regenerate the harbour area and create a vibrant new seafront for the town. The company is based in Folkestone and is led by Sir Roger De Haan, former Chair of the town’s principal employer Saga Group. He is supported by a board of directors who provide an extensive range of skills and expertise in the housing, property, building and public sectors. Their experience includes management of major development schemes, property sales and marketing and responsibility for national and regional planning strategy and regeneration policy.
Since stepping down as Chair of Saga in 2004, Sir Roger has been at the forefront of projects designed to help Folkestone become a more attractive place in which to live and work, and that support the local community. These initiatives include over £90 million of charitable support through the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, focusing principally on education, arts and creativity and sports projects. Sir Roger was awarded the CBE in June 2004 and knighted in 2014 for services to education and to charity in Kent and overseas.

Folkestone Harbour Arm - DJI Phantom 4 Pro - 2019
In 1541, plans were made to use Folkestone as a strategic port in the up-coming war against France, but when Henry VIII visited first Folkestone then Dover at the beginning of May 1542, the plan for Folkestone Harbour was abandoned in favour of Dover. Folkestone remained a small fishing port, struggling against encroaching shingle and battered by storms at a great cost to life and livelihoods until the early 1800s. It took a three year petition by the Earl of Ragnor to finally pass an Act of Parliament that led to the construction of a stone pier and harbour, made from local sandstone, and completed in 1810. Over the following decade, the harbour grew modestly, as did its trade and population, but it was still hindered by silt; the failed attempts to remove which led Folkestone Harbour Company to bankruptcy in 1842. The harbour was sold to the South Eastern Railway Company, and in 1843 became the base for a ferry service to Boulogne. The railway invested heavily in the harbour, opening up Folkestone Harbour railway station in 1849, and Folkestone port prospered, with many of the 19th century's import/export trade ships registered there.
Fast forward to the year 2000, and Folkestone Harbour railway station no longer had a regular train service (the branch line was officially and permanently closed in 2014). By 2001 Folkestone's ferry services had all been stopped, and by 2002 only 10 boats and 30 men were employed in the fishing industry. In 2013 planning permission was granted for the development of the harbour and seafront, which is an on-going project today. The stonework and original steelwork on the harbour arm were restored and opened as a promenade in 2015. During the summer months the Harbour Arm is now a major attraction for the town, with food stalls, live music and bars. There are even special outdoor cinema screenings and special art installations, such as Antony Gormley's Another Time statue which can been viewed from the Arm.
The walk along the old railway line, across the swing bridge, through the renovated station and along to the lighthouse is lovely at any time of the year. There is even a bar at the foot of the lighthouse should you need a refreshment before continuing along the top of the Arm and out onto the beach.
