Is Colombian Food Good? ???? Delicious Medellin food tour. Eating Traditional Food in Colombia
While in Medellin, we decided we had to do an eating Colombian food part two (we did part one last year in Cartagena, to watch it click here:
This time around we opted to try some different dishes and ones that are a bit more typical to the region.
We started off with a huge breakfast dish called bandeja paisa. It’s a plate full of a whole bunch of things including an egg, sausage, beans and rice. Here we also got coconut lemonade. The restaurant we went to was called Hacienda.
Next we tried another very hearty dish called Ajiaco which is a type of soup made with chicken, rice and corn which we tried at a restaurant called Ajiaco y Mondongo.
After that we opted for some lighter food and first tried a small deep fried, cheese dough ball called Bunuelos.
On our last stop we also went for a relatively small dish. We tried Arepas before but this time we tried Arepas Con Queso (with cheese).

Colombian Food: The Best Colombian Street Food In Medellin
Street food Colombia Wow!

For more stories, tips and information about our Life Redesign or Travel you can find us at:
This video is about our day discovering Colombian food especially Colombian Street Food in Medellin!
The False Perceptions of Colombian Street Foods
One of the highlights of any travel destination is no doubt; The FOOD! Better yet, a food tour where you can appreciate what to eat, where to go. Food in Colombia however, gets a bad rap. Some visitors say Colombian food is: bland, heavy, tastes all the same. Colombia is not the foodie wonderland of Italy, Thailand or Mexico but there is one thing it has:
Colombia has some of the best comfort foods.
It is hearty, rich, filling - and what Troy and I didn't realize, it's food that has meaning to every Colombian. Food is the center of family gatherings: an important of Colombian way of life.
Why take a Colombian street foods tour
We spent an afternoon with LaMesa food tours in Medellín, with our guide Laura. Even though we spent four months in Colombia, we wanted to hear the stories about the food here, and try some of the flavors we haven't tasted yet or foods we didn't have the nerve to try yet!
This tour gives you a chance to hear about the importance of food and family traditions in Colombia, and boy, are Colombians passionate about sharing their culture!
What you will learn about the local Colombian food
We discovered that Colombian food is regional, there is a different approach to each dish wherever you visit. Also, some dishes aren't served everywhere. The people of Medellín and area (Paisas) have distinct local foods they eat, so when you travel in Colombia to Medellín, or within Antioquia, they eat most of the same dishes. In this area, you can expect an array of incredible fruit, juices and meat loving delicacies.
Some of the food highlights of the tour:
Buñuelos: Essentially, it's a fried dough ball with Colombian cheese inside. It's a great breakfast and coffee treat instead of a Danish.
Empanadas: Fried corn dough filled with chicken, or meat, or vegetables. The best ones we had were on this food tour – filled with meat and rice topped with a spicy dipping sauce. We were happy to find there was a little spice discovery with this particular to-die-for dipping sauce.
Arepas: There are numerous kinds of Arepa options in Medellín. On this tour, you discover Arepas de Choclo
Fruit and fruit drinks: The most delicious, more exotic fruits you have ever tasted. There are fruits in Colombia not found in other countries. A tour like this is the perfect chance to understand what you like, and don't like when it comes to eating and drinking fresh fruit. Notable flavors were: Guanábana, Lulo, La uchuva, Granadillas, Maracuyá (Passion Fruit), Tomate de árbol (Tree tomato), and Pitahayas (Yellow Dragon fruit). I was pleasantly surprised by the drink Borojo. It is a fruit that is fermented and served with milk. It is high in protein, phosphorus and known as an aphrodisiac and energy drink. It has such a unique taste; I cannot explain the flavor.
Bandeja Paisa is known asThequintessential Paisa dish. The main ingredients include red beans (usually cooked with pork), ground meat, chorizo, and Chicharrón, blood sausage, a fried egg, plantain, arepa, rice, hogao sauce, and avocado. This is an enormous dish, but Laura informed us in some homes, only one or two meats are served, so it is possible to finish the entire dish. This was the best cooked Chicharrón (fried pork belly) we have ever had, initially, we were turned off by this dish as it was poorly cooked, it was very hard and tough, almost impossible to chew!
Our only regret was taking this food tour, just days before we left Medellín! We would have known the places to go, the food we enjoyed, now we just have to visit again to treat ourselves to our favorite selections. What street foods do you enjoy the most? We'd love to hear about them.

THE BEST MEDELLIN VLOG EVER?????????????COLOMBIAN GIRLS, STREET FOOD, INSANE METROCABLE TOUR VIEW!!????????
Video Not Available? Go watch on FACEBOOK! --
One of the top tourist attractions in Medellín is the Medellin Metrocable ride. You go right over Santa Domingo, a neighborhood built into the mountain. For locals the gondola ride is the regular commute system. For tourists it's the way up into Parque Arvi, a big national forest over the mountain.
The best part is the amazing views of the city along the way, and observing the sights and colors directly above a local Colombian neighborhood, known as the favelas or comunas, they say once was Medellin's most dangerous area during the Pablo Escobar era.
Lift Tickets are only 5000 pesos per person for one-way, less than $2USD. It's clean and easy.
When you get to Parque Arví there are some food booths, we try the Fiambres. A rice blend with chicharrón aka fried pork belly aka super bacon, plantains, egg and a potato mash mix. Not bad. You can also go on nature walks thru the park but we didn't have time.
On the way down, there's a short walk across a local street as you transfer lift stations. Perfect opportunity to sample some local streetfood carts.
First thing I saw was these cheese pancake things, tasted like a grilled cheese sandwich all mixed up! Good! And also a mashed plantain aka mashed banana pancake, topped with cheese and sweet milk lol. Not bad!! Try it!
Later we check into a new Medellin Airbnb, a 3 bedroom apartment in El Poblado district for around $180 USD a night.
More Metrocable tips on TripAdvisor:
First cafe:
Cafe Al Alma - La Strada Mall
Last restaurant:
Restaurante BARCAL - 5 star food at local prices. Recommended if u are a foodie and want to try some CRAZY Top-Chef type concoctions such as grilled octopus over crumbled Popcorn;) (Check my instagram) Was only around $30USD per person including appetizers and dessert! (Olive oil ice cream w mango and passion fruit!) At home would've been at least double the price for this food!

— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

What to do in Medellin Colombia - Food, Nightlife & Neighborhoods
A great guide to where to go in Medellin for day and nighttime adventures. There's some great spots to visit and lots of good food along the way. Here's my favorite spots!
Street Food Tour with Tasty Town in Medellin
Food in Medellin Colombia - My personal food experience
This is my personal food experience of food in Medellin Colombia. These are just my thoughts on food in Medellin Colombia. No slight on anyone or any place. Just my personal thoughts. I have an American salt driven level of taste buds. So this is just one reason why I didn't like food in Medellin Colombia. Well, I can't and shouldn't say ALL. as I did like a lot. This is just my overall thoughts on food in Medellin. After moving to Medellin Colombia one thing I looked forward to was food of all types in Medellin. I hope my Colombian friends are not offended, but this is my honest experience. Food was not salty or sweet as to what I expected. I was bland and without salt or seasoning which is what Americans have been trained to like. Take McDonalds; they spend billions on how to make Americans salivate. So if you travel to Colombia or travel to Medellin Colombia, my say, and again, MY SAY, is that food is not seasoned to American's standards. We like SALT. Maybe this is why we have high blood pressure.
But that tamale, was the worst thing I'd ever been served. Straight disgusting. I'm surprised that I actually bit, chewed and swallowed that stuff. It was extremely obscene. But again, I'm a rude American and we're just like this. We expect things a certain way and when we don't get this, we have an issue.
Sweet Georgia Cafe was my favorite choice for food. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. This is a must stop when in Medellin. So if you visit Medellin Colombia, Sweet Georgia Cafe should be on your list. Before long, you'll want some down home comfort food. The owner Rob, has it all figured out. Stop by and say hello and tell Rob, Rob send you.
1968 Burgers was my choice for best burger. I never tried the burger at Sweet Georgia Cafe, but until then, this is the bomb burger. So if you take a trip to Medellin Colombia and want a burger stop by. Tell the server that she was my 100th subscriber. Note, SUBSCRIBE!!! Travel Colombia and travel Medellin Colombia; it will change you forever. Living in Medellin Colombia has changed mine. Life is good.

Traveling is embedded into our relationship as we met on a Spring Break cruise in 2016. Since then, we haven't stopped traveling together in the United States and abroad. We left New York in July 2019 to travel the world and we took work with us. We have made it our mission to slow travel for 16 months throughout South America and Asia.
Traveling Atlas was created to capture our moments of taking risk, building connections, and seeing the world. We will be staying in each country we visit for about a month in order to experience cultures to our maximum capacity and to inspire others that they can do the same. We are Brandon and Erin, follow the journey and stay tuned.
Explore El Poblado Medellin. We're Shocked this is here! What to do + Where to Eat. Travel Colombia
While in Medellin, Colombia we spent a day checking out the area called El Poblado to find the best things to do in the district. El Poblado is known for being touristy and trendy. It’s full or restaurants, bars, boutiques and coffee shops. It’s also becoming a big hub for digital nomads.
We start off the video by showing you the amazing view from our apartment rental in El Poblado (which also has a rooftop pool).
Because it was a Sunday, and we were in a trendy area we decided to go in search of brunch and ended up at a place called 37 Park.
Later, as we explore the neighourhood we check out all the different types of restaurants/foods that are available there.
We found it frequently rained in the afternoons in Medellin, and this day was no different. A big thunderstorm came in so we took shelter in a craft beer bar called BBC.
Lastly we took an Uber back towards our apartment to a very local bar/restaurant called La Otra Estacion which is quite affordable and has a small but delicious menu.

Colombian Food Review - Cheap Food In Medellin
Cheap food in Medellin was the goal on my last trip to Medellin Colombia. I have always wanted to try street food in Medellin and I finally took the plunge. This street vendor had cheap food and was located in Laureles Medellin on La 70 or La Setenta. Cheap food in Medellin and all over Colombia is very prevalent. You won't beleive how affordable this meal was, watch until the end to find out how much I paid. Please like, share and subscribe for more great content.
