Polson Lumber Company (was largest in world), Hoquiam, WA
Sorry, this is not readable because I used anti-wobble.
------------------------------------
In 1891, after logging independently with oxen in the 1880s, Nova Scotian immigrant Alex Polson joined with his brother Robert to start the Polson Brothers Logging Co. By 1900, the brothers were well established, with a short stretch of railroad to the north of town and a log dump on the Middle Fork of the Hoquiam River.
On Sept 12, 1902 - infamouslu called The Dark Day of Western Washington - fire swept through much of northern Grays Harbor's best fir stands, including nearly all timberlands of the Polsons closest competitor, the Merril and Ring company. Within weeks the Polsons accepted Merril & Rings offer to merge their two companies, choosing as the firms new name the Polson Logging Company.
By 1910, the company had expanded into a veritable timber empire, widely recognized as the largest logging operation in the world. The Polson's extensive railroad network, linking 12 logging and construction camps with more than 100 miles of track, allowed an annual dump of as much as 300 million board feet of logs into the Hoquiam River for transport to Harbor mills. Much of this timber was sawn by the Polson's own sawmill the huge Eureka Lumber and Shingle Company -located at the foot of the Ontario Street between 1914 and 1940.
When the Polson Logging Company sold their entire operation in 1948 to Rayonier, Inc.the era of the large scale, family controlled logging was nearly finished on Grays Harbor.
------------------------------------------
The Polsons operated 2 steam tugs, the Pilot and the Petrel, to pull log booms for their log dump. An extensive channel system of piling and floating logs extending down the river kept the rafts from hanging up on the banks.

BANDIT:
Bandit is a 2 year old rescue dog saved from a kill shelter in California. He was horribly matted, dirty and looked like a Terrier/Shih Tzu mix. After he was groomed it became clear he is a purebred Parti Poodle. A fairly unusual dog, a Parti Poodle has a unique coloration only possible when both parents are purebred Parti Poodles. The gene necessary to produce the coloration is recessive and both parents must have it. I would have loved him either way but am blessed to have him as he is. =8v)

RUMRUNNER'S PARADISE
New Year's Eve, 1915 was a party to end all parties in Spokane. At the stroke of midnight, every saloon in the state would be out of business. This would be the last call before statewide prohibition would be enacted, closing the taps four years before the rest of the nation. But even as revelers saluted the new dry year, a lucrative wet underworld was forming between Spokane and Canada.

Ancient Kalapuya Indian Mound
Ancient Kalapuya Indian Indian Mound and history. A lot of people are asking this .... What are Indian mounds made of?
Standard Indian mounds were constructed by deliberately heaping soil, rock, or other materials (such as ash, shell, and the remains of burned buildings) onto natural land surfaces. This mound I explored is a Standard Indian Mound, not a burial mound. The only burial mound shown on a push pin map on this video has been washed out. I respect sacred Kalapuya burial mound sites. Because of the controversy, comments are no longer allowed.
I have cancelled the event mentioned in the video. Dealing with tribal members proved impossible to promote the event.

Life in the Early 1800s

I recently had an opportunity to go back in time. Specifically, to the early 1800s and the Nebraska frontier. Every year, the Washington County Historical Association hosts a 2-day event called Heritage Days at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park. The event celebrates the history of the early settlement days of Nebraska through hands-on learning demonstrations, traditional foods, and historical re-enactment, aka “living history.”
Fort Atkinson was the first United States military post west of the Missouri River. The U.S. chose the location for the fort based on the recommendation of explorer William Clark. Yes, he was the Clark of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. Clark had wrote down in his journal that the area would be perfect for a military post. The U.S. established Fort Atkinson in 1820. It was extremely important to the early fur trade, for river transportation west, and for Native American relations. At the fort’s peak, almost a quarter of the country’s standing army resided there. However, the U.S. government abandoned the fort in 1827, just seven years after it opened. The Army had opened up a new fort further south called Fort Leavenworth, and it shifted its resources there, so it didn’t need Fort Atkinson anymore. Fort Leavenworth, by the way, still exists today and continues to be an important military installation.
Meanwhile, farmers had taken over the area that used to be Fort Atkinson. Flash forward to 1961, and the locals began a huge push to preserve and restore the area. Soon after, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission bought the land and, during a period of around 20 years, completed reconstructed the fort. Today, the place is one of the best kept historical parks in the country.
If you really want to get a feel for what life was truly like in the early 1800s in America, I strongly recommend you check out Fort Atkinson State Historical Park.

100 Years on the Lincoln Highway
Before the Interstate Highway System, before famed Route 66, before highways were even numbered, there was one road that started it all, one road that changed America forever: The Lincoln Highway. “100 Years on the Lincoln Highway” is the story of the first coast to coast automobile road in the United States and its impact on Wyoming.
