Kobe Ijinkan
During the 2nd half of the 19th century, Kobe port was opened to foreign trade, and many foreign merchants settled in this place. Western-style buildings built during that time and inhabited by Europeans and Americans is known as Ijinkan and now converted into public museums. This place is popular among young people and offers a variety of cafes, restaurants and boutiques.
Few interesting houses that is opened to public are England House France House Ben's House, Italian House, Former Chinese Consulate, Dutch Museum and Fragrance House etc. To enter these houses you may take the combined tickets or single ticket sold in the Ijinkan itself.
If you take the Kobe Loop Bus, the bus will stop over at the Ijinkan bus stop.
I visited the Starbucks and English House.
Admission: 750 yen (also available as part of a combination ticket)
This house was built in 1907 and displays antique furniture and household items of that time.
There are 2 bars at the ground level which are open for business on Sundays and holidays from 17:00 to 25:00.
I found the second floor most attractive as it houses a collection of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia, and a replica of 221B Baker Street where he used to live.
Japan Nationalists Protests - Kobe, 17th August 2012.
Hundreds and hundreds of policemen just for a dozen or so nationalists. It must be acknowledged though that they had several very noisy buses so they could create a kind of locomotion around Sannomiya - the center of Kobe. Otherwise the protest was looking almost pitiful - we expected something much, much bigger judging by the enormous concentration of riot police and equipment!
PS. I think the reason for this particular protest was the landing of several Chinese men on Senkaku islands. But the nationalists like to organize from time to time such rallies so who knows...

China's Toxic Air Drifts over to Japan
China has been battered with heavy smog and off-the-chart air quality readings in the past month. And now the wind is blowing China's toxic air over to its neighbors.
Recently Japan has seen increased concentrations of PM2.5 particles in the south-western parts of the country. And Japanese media have been extensively covering the moving airborne pollution.
The Japanese Ministry of the Environment told the AFP that access to their online air-pollution readings has been almost impossible since last week.
Japanese authorities have already added new monitoring stations and ordered more research in response.
[Noboteru Ishihara, Japanese Environment Minister]:
If you think logically, this pollution is coming over (to Japan) on trade winds, so when that trade wind gets stronger we are likely to see this pollution blanket all of Japan. So I have ordered that we find out how this happens, what effects on people it will have, and how to urgently deal with this issue.
According to Japan's environmental laws, air quality beyond the daily average of 35 micrograms per cubic meter is deemed unsafe. And last week some parts in Nagasaki Prefecture reached an average of 41 micrograms, according to Japanese newspaper, Asahi Shinbun.
The increased air pollution comes after heavy smog and haze battered eastern China last month. In Beijing, the U.S. embassy reported that concentration of tiny particles in the air reached over 700 micrograms in mid-January.
Levels above 300 a day are considered hazardous by the World Health Organization.

Japan steel giant's shares melt as misconduct scandal grows
The impact of the Kobe Steel scandal is starting to be felt. One of Japan's largest steelmakers has lost more than a third of its stock market value - in a record two-day slide - after admitting it falsified product data on its products.
The improper certifications were made so products appeared to meet customers’ specifications when they in fact did not.
And the misconduct now appears to be wider than initially thought.
Al Jazeera's Florence Looi reports from Tokyo.
