Fort Frederick Port Elizabeth
Built in 1799 on a natural citadel, Fort Frederick stands guard over a magnificent view of Algoa Bay.
History tells us that we continued to take over from one another and keep control and fight for the land that always belong to the other.
We continue to do just the same and encounter countless number of suffering around the world each day.
Named after Frederick, Duke of York and Commander of the British Army, it was built by troops sent to Algoa Bay to prevent a possible landing of French troops to assist the Graaff-Reinet rebels during the Napoleonic wars, the inception of British occupation of the colony.
Fort Frederick History
The colonial fort in Port Royal, SC, is a tabby structure constructed early in the 18th century to warn of approaching Spanish ships. The poor choice for its site and other mistakes resulted in its original mission being short-lived. But on January 1, 1863, the old fort became the site of a monumental event in American history with the celebration of the first reading in the South of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Port Elizabeth Travel Guide - Exploring Magnificent South Africa
Port Elizabeth (or just PE if you want to sound South African) is South Africa's fifth largest city and is located on the Indian Ocean coast half-way between Cape Town and Durban, in the Eastern Cape, about 260 km from Knysna. Also known as the friendly city and the windy city, it tends to live up to both names.
A perfect complement to the Garden Route, the Friendly City is a major sea port and tourist destination set along the beautiful shores of Nelson Mandela Bay. The centre of the South African motor industry is spoiled by moderate and warm temperatures all year round with scattered rain throughout the year - climatic attributes which contribute to an outstanding quality of life.
A popular and significant destination for water sports, Port Elizabeth also offers many historical attractions, such as the Historic Donkin Heritage trail, taking visitors along the footsteps of the 1820 settlers. British heritage is reflected in the Port Elizabeth Cricket Club, and the Oldest Bowling Green in South Africa. Port Elizabeth’s greatest treasures, however, are malaria-free wildlife areas in its vicinity, and clean beaches washed by warm water.
Port Elizabeth was founded by British settlers in 1820 and was named after the wife of Rufane Donkin, Acting Governor of the Cape Colony at that time. The city is located on the Algoa Bay and forms together with the neighboring towns of Uitenhage and Despatch the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality.
PE is a wonderful jumping-off spot for game viewing. There are elephants and other birds and animals at Addo Elephant National Park and many privately owned game reserves in the area, as well as great area for viewing marine life in the form of dolphins, whales and African penguins.
Brooke's Pavilion has excellent views over the beaches and ocean. Any one of the restaurants there are a good idea for breakfast with a view. Accommodation ranges from hostels to more luxury accommodation. Whatever you want, you can find without trouble.

Local commuter services are operated by Metrorail, while the Shosholoza Meyl long-distance passenger service links PE with Johannesburg via Bloemfontein where it is possible to connect with other long-distance routes. Port Elizabeth Airport (IATA airport code PLZ, ICAO airport code FAPE) serves the city for both passenger and cargo traffic. It is the fourth busiest airport in South Africa after Johannesburg International Airport, King Shaka International Airport in Durban, and Cape Town International Airport. Port Elizabeth has a harbour in Algoa Bay, and the construction of an additional international harbour at Coega has supported an increase in the size of the city's industries and the addition of new industries.
Under the Köppen climate classification, Port Elizabeth has an oceanic climate (Cfb ). The area lies between the winter rainfall, Mediterranean climate zones of the Western Cape and the summer rainfall regions of eastern South Africa. Winters are cool but mild and summers are warm but considerably less humid and hot than more northerly parts of South Africa's east coast.

Horse Memorial, Port Elizabeth - The South African Statue Saga
How far will South Africa go? The San and Khoi were the first people in South Africa. The African tribes who came from Central and East Africa, went to war with the San / Khoi and dispossessed them of their land and so on. How come then do black extremist politicians get it right to destroy South African statues of any kind, or even ask for them to come down - where if push comes to shove, the existing San / Khoi, and all South Africans, have the right to ask for black folk's statues to come down too then, and cities & streets to be re-named after San / Khoi leaders and so on - and to top it all, South African land must then be handed back to the San & Khoi. How is this all being missed? Time for South Africans to put their foot down, and live with all history, good or bad. Yes, the worst of the statues (eg: Verwoerd, who helped Apartheid along so much) should be removed to museums, but why all the other statues. Black folk did much the same to the San / Khoi as what the Europeans did to black folk. Fair is fair, shall all the black statues be removed too? Port Elizabeth 100 years as a city - 28 July 1913
Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) reached another important milestone on 28 July 2013, as it marked one century since Port Elizabeth was declared a city on 28 July 1913. Interestingly, other parts of NMB that have already reached this milestone, including the first settlement which was established in 1799 which coincided with the building of Fort Frederick and then later in 1820 with the landing of British Settlers and the naming of Port Elizabeth; Uitenhage, which was founded in 1804 and celebrated its double century in 2004, and New Brighton, which was established in 1902 to house families who had been displaced during the plague outbreak at the time.

The Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany KG GMB GCH , a member of the House of Hanover, was the second son and child of King George III, King of Great Britain and Ireland and Elector of Hanover.A soldier by profession, from 1764 to 1803 he was Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück, and from the death of his father in 1820 until his own death in 1827 he was the heir presumptive to his elder brother, King George IV, both to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Kingdom of Hanover. However, he died before his brother.Frederick was thrust into the British Army at a very early age and was appointed to high command at the age of thirty, when he was given command of a notoriously ineffectual campaign during the War of the First Coalition, a continental war following the French Revolution.
