Ft Griffin State Historic Site - Texas State Historic Site
Fort Griffin State Historic Site - Texas State Historic Site
In October of 2018, the Two Tired Teachers visited Fort Griffin State Historic Site right in the middle of nowhere Texas.
Notice, if you have a Texas State Park Pass, it will not defray any of the cost of this park.
The camping part of Fort Griffin is across the highway from the historic part.
Some of the campsites have water and electric, some that are full hookups, and a few that are walk in sites with water only. A couple of the campsites are pull up sites; you pull off the road and the campsite is parallel to your vehicle.
To get to the creek at the park, you have to climb down (and eventually back up) some rather steep steps without a rail.
Fort Griffin does have a longhorn herd. It is on both sides of the park -- the campground and the historic part.
The historic site has a fun information area with many hands on activities. The information building also offered several videos about the people and places.
This historic site has many recreated historic buildings. One of the most fun thing was driving the golf carts from building to building, Driving the golf carts was new to us, and we have more fun than we'd had in a long time.
A third area of the historic site has been sold to a private family, but they let you visit those buildings.
Sharon and her dogs almost had an up close and personal meeting with a skunk. Fortunately, the skunk went on his way, and no one got sprayed.
If you plan on visiting Fort Griffin State Historic Site, you might want to make reservations because you will find no where else to camp for more than 50 miles.
The Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd at Fort Griffin
-- Did you know the State of Texas maintains a herd of traditional Longhorns? Part of that herd resides at our Fort Griffin State Historic Site near Albany, where we preserve the breed so residents and visitors can see and experience animals similar to those that played such a vital role in the development of Texas. Learn more at visitfortgriffin.com.
The Texas Bucket List - Caddo Mounds State Historic Site in Alto
We visit a State Historic Site that celebrates and honors Indian culture and tribes who lived and thrived in the Lone Star State many years ago.
Lockheed MC-130
The Lockheed MC-130 is the basic designation for a family of special mission aircraft operated by the United States Air Force Special Operations Command, a wing of the Air Education and Training Command, and an AFSOC-gained wing of the Air Force Reserve Command. Based on the C-130 Hercules transport, their mission is the infiltration, exfiltration, and resupply of special operations forces, and the air refueling of special operations helicopter and tilt-rotor aircraft.
Members of the family include the MC-130E Combat Talon I, MC-130H Combat Talon II, MC-130W Combat/Dragon Spear, MC-130P Combat Shadow, and MC-130J Commando II. A possible MC-130 variant, designated the XFC-130H, did not proceed beyond the development stage, but one of its aircraft became the YMC-130H test bed aircraft for the Combat Talon II. The Air Force is requesting acquisition of at least 37 new production MC-130J aircraft to replace the Combat Talon Is and Combat Shadows, with the first ten received in 2011. A total of 69 MC-130J aircraft are planned, which will eventually replace all other MC-130 variants.

Bell comments on the integration of Georgia schools and the University of Georgia, the Kennedy presidential campaign in Georgia, and Martin Luther King's releases from jail in Georgia. Griffin discusses the abolished county unit system and on the E.F. Hutton and Exxon Valdez cases. Bell recalls his time as an attorney supporting the civil rights movement, his relationship with Charlie Block, and the confirmation of Judge Alex Lawrence. He reflects on the estrangement between President Johnson and Richard B. Russell and his own confirmation as attorney general. SUMMARY
=======
The history of American newspapers begins in the early 18th century with the publication of the first colonial newspapers. American newspapers began as modest affairs—a sideline for printers. They became a political force in the campaign for American independence. Following independence the first article of U.S. Constitution guaranteed freedom of the press. The U.S. Postal Service Act of 1792 provided substantial subsidies: Newspapers were delivered up to 100 miles for a penny and beyond for 1.5 cents, when first class postage ranged from six cents to a quarter.
The American press grew rapidly during the First Party System (1790s-1810s) when both parties sponsored papers to reach their loyal partisans. From the 1830s onward, the Penny press began to play a major role in American journalism. Technological advancements such as the telegraph and faster printing presses in the 1840s also helped to expand the press of the nation as it experienced rapid economic and demographic growth. Editors typically became the local party spokesman, and hard-hitting editorials were widely reprinted.
By 1900 major newspapers had become profitable powerhouses of advocacy, muckraking and sensationalism, along with serious, and objective news-gathering. During the early 20th century, prior to rise of television, the average American read several newspapers per-day. Starting in the 1920s changes in technology again morphed the nature of American journalism as radio and later, television, began to play increasingly important competitive roles.
In the late 20th century, much of American journalism became housed in big media chains. With the coming of digital journalism in the 21st century, all newspapers faced a business crisis as readers turned to the Internet for sources and advertisers followed them.

Wheeler discusses the importance of the Department of Veterans Services and explains the duties of the Commissioner of Veteran Affairs. He mentions a specific project he undertook to identify all the Veterans in the former state mental hospital, Central State Hospital, in Milledgeville and to provide the services these veterans are entitled to. Wheeler also discusses his work with veterans from other wars such as the Spanish-American War and the widows of soldiers who had fought in the American Civil War. He explains his wife's experience during World War II and the employment of the rest of his family during the war.
