Fort Nelson, B.C.
Located at Mile 300 of the Historic Alaska Highway, the town of Fort Nelson, now known as the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality, is a full-service stop situated in a seemingly unending landscape of soaring vistas and pristine wilderness.
Home to approximately 5,000 people, the town has a unique seasonal population with the oil and gas industry attracting approximately 2,000 additional people during the winter, and tourism attracting some 320,000 visitors throughout the warmer months.
Although natural gas extraction is a mainstay of the local economy, Fort Nelson serves as a gateway to a vibrant and dynamic region that includes the rolling hills of the Peace Country, the craggy mountaintops of the Northern Rockies, the incredible canyons and waterfalls of Nahanni National Park and a stream of natural wonders along the Alaska Highway all the way to Fairbanks, Alaska.
The town itself offers a wide range of amenities including first-rate hotels, restaurants and bars, as well as cultural and recreational facilities that include a performing arts centre, golf course, aquatic centre, bowling alley, library, two rinks and museum.

Today was a pretty good day in Fort Nelson. We got some pretty decent sleep last night, then got up and put in a full day of work. It was pretty nice, not having to worry about getting on the road afterwards, we may be on to something here.
After work, we decided to do a little exploring. Our neighbors told us about the bike paths here, so we went off to ride some of them. Candace wanted a bell for her bike (bears), so we hit up a local bike shop and hit the trail – it was a pretty good little ride, about 10K.
After the ride, we hit up a little gym called Iron Alley – perfect for us, decent equipment, and a good workout.
This evening, we cooked some food and relaxed. May even get an episode of Game of Thrones in. Hoping to get to bed early and get some sleep.
All in all, Fort Nelson has been a pretty nice little stop. They’re well set up for travelers – great visitors center, two RV dump/water stations, a recreation center complete with pool, indoor track, and rock climbing wall, and some decent biking/hiking trails. They even have a nice little park with some water attractions for the kids!

I dropped by Nelson, in the West Kootenays, British Columbia, Canada about 2 years ago and the weather was... awful. This time around I got lucky.
The film Roxanne, starring Steve Martin, was filmed in this city... once upon a time.

Fort Nelson Big Bang Event
This event marked a major milestone in the long and colourful history of the Royal Armouries!
In true Armouries' style, we launched the £3.5 million redevelopment of Fort Nelson with an explosive event - including cannon fire and an almighty bang.
The first step of the transformation began with the demolition of our more modern buildings with a Sexton tank firing the first shot.
The event marked the latest development in the long and colourful history of Fort Nelson - a Victorian fort on the south coast of England that houses the national collection of artillery and cannon.
Today, thanks to the generous help of the British National Heritage Lottery Fund and a number of other supporters, the Fort is about to be transformed to allow the visitor to not only see the big guns, but also to understand more about the Fort itself and the people who built and inhabited it.
Designed to keep Napoleon III out, the museum is now set to welcome thousands of visitors in. Improvements include a dramatic new, glass-sided entrance gallery; a state of the art education centre featuring a new classroom of the future; and dramatic entrance bridge.

Fort Nelson Tunnel Run - Fort Nelson - Fareham, UK
A quick look along the central and longest tunnel of Fort Nelson.
Built in the 1860's and first used by troops in 1871.
One of the line of Palmerston forts on Portsdown Hill and named after the nearby Nelson Monument that was erected 1807-1808 after Admiral Lord Nelsons death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
Fort Nelson has recently undergone a multi million pound redevelopment supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. and houses an impressive collection of Big Guns.
This large fort is well worth a visit.
Admission is free also.
Morning Waffles ~ RV Park Rip-Off ~ Fort Nelson Heritage Museum ~ S2E11
We wake up early so G can get her morning waffles...Happy G Happy RV. Then we find out our camp spot not only didn't have wifi, they didn't even have the water on. Next time through we will not be staying at this camp ground! Then we explore the awesome Heritage Museum even though it was closed and make our wait to St John.
