Best Walks in Victoria BC: Westsong West Bay Walkway - Vlog 112
In the early days when the Hudson’s Bay Company arrived in Victoria, Fort Victoria was set up in 1842. While the Songhees Nations of the Coast Salish people lived beside Fort Victoria for a time, eventually they were pushed across the waterways to the west side of the harbour now called West Vic where we will take our walk today.
This is also known as Pallastis or The Place of Cradles, a sacred site for the Songhees First Nations People. When their children had learned to walk, their cradles were placed in ceremony along the Pallastis shore. The ceremony was performed to ensure a long life for the child. If you wanted to strengthen your spiritual path, you would jump into the harbour from Pallastis holding a stone within a ceremony. Pallastis or The Place of Cradles is now known as Songhees Point Park.
The Inner Harbour is incredibly busy. Inner Harbour Air is Canada's busiest seaplane airport. Anecdotally as a Victorian I can attest to that. In the summer I can tell you the time by when the sea planes start in the morning.
If you get tired you can take a water taxi home. Victoria Harbour Ferry and Water Taxis have been a part of Victoria for 25 years. They have transported over 3 million passengers in the inner harbour.
So under the category of only in Victoria BC, every Sunday at 10:45 am from May through September and every Saturday in July and August the water taxis perform a choreographed water ballet using 5 water taxis. You can even meet the waterballet captains at the Empress Dock after their performance.
If you get hungry along the way you can stop at Spinnaker’s Brewpub. Spinnaker’s Brespub is Canada’s first in house brewpub. Their heritage guest house was built in 1884. Spinnaker’s overlooks Limbebay.
You will also be able to see the Float Homes at Fisherman’s Wharf on the Westsong Walkway. Float homes are homes built on floatation systems. This float home neighbourhood was established in 2002. You have to apply to the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority to buy a float home. You also have to pay moorage fees and licensing fees. If your application of ownership is approved you must live in your float home, you cannot rent it out.
Getting there: From the Inner Harbour, walk along Wharf Street and across the Johnson Street Bridge. Follow the footpath on the left and watch for the signs marking the Westsong Walkway. You’ll be walking by the Delta Victoria hotel. If you’re approaching from some other point of origin, like the ferry terminal or bus depot, use Google Maps and make the Delta Victoria your destination.
Beginning at Songhees Point, walk along the Victoria waterfront to West Bay. The walkway is mostly level and is paved so it is wheelchair accessible. At all points along this walk there are views of the harbour. A nice walk if you’re stuck in the city or are unable to tackle more moderate hikes.
Directions:
From Downtown Victoria, cross the Johnson St. Bridge into Esquimalt. Turn Left on Songhees Road. There is a small amount of parking near the water. This is only one of several access points. Nearly every road between here and Head St. has an access point.

If you are wondering what to do in Victoria B.C., then this is the vlog for you. We are going to share with you our top ten things to do in Victoria B.C. Put on your pedometers and fitbits because most of them are in walking distance in downtown Victoria and you will have bragging rights about the number of steps you walk each day. Some of them are a short drive out of town if you have a car. We have shared our best free things to do in Victoria and some of the things that are well worth the money.
#10 Whale Watching Tours with BC Whale Tours
Whale watching in Victoria BC is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It is worth the extra money to go out on a whale watching tour. If you are in Victoria and you have the time and money, make sure you go whale watching at least once.
#9 Fan Tan Alley in Chinatown
One of the most interesting things to do in Victoria BC is visit Fan Tam Alley in Chinatown. The Alley is great for photography and shopping. My personal favourite is Kid Sister Ice Cream.
#8 Shopping in Victoria BC, Lower Johnson to Government Street
My favourite place to shop in Victoria BC are the shops on Lower Johnson and then walk along Government Street. There are lots of independently owned businesses with local artisans that you will not find anywhere else.
#7 Victoria Bakery
Victoria BC has no shortage of fabulous bakeries. Our personal favourite is Crust Bakery on Fort Street. I would recommend their cronuts, a cross between a croissant and a donut.
#6 Beacon Hill Park Petting Zoo - Running of the Goats, Goat Stampede!
The gate to the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm open’s at 10 am in the summer and everyday at 10:10 am there is the adorable “Running of the Goats,” 30 seconds of sheer joy.
#5 Beacon Hill Park
Beacon Hill Park is over 200 acres of gorgeous parkland in downtown Victoria BC. There are bridges, lakes, ponds, paths, gardens, trees, flowers, running streams, ducks, birds, wildlife, eagles, and blue herons. It is a beautiful place to go for a walk or sit on a park bench.
#4 Goldstream Provincial Park
If you have a car you can take a short drive out of town to Goldstream Provincial Park. The park boasts some beautiful old-growth trees including Douglas firs and Western Red Cedars. Some of them are 600 years old. You can walk the flat trails around the lower part of the park or if you are feeling adventurous take a hike up to the Railway Trestle.
#3 Mount Doug (Mount Douglas Park)
Again if you have a car you can drive out to Saanich and take a drive to the top of Mount Doug from noon to dusk each day. Churchill Drive allows you to drive to the top seven days a week, or if you are feeling fit, you can take any of the trails from the bottom to the summit for spectacular 360 degree views of the city.
#2 Eat at Red Fish Blue Fish
Our favourite restaurant in Victoria BC is Red Fish Blue Fish. Red Fish Blue Fish actually isn’t a restaurant, you have to line up and for a long time at an up-cycled cargo container in the Inner Harbour for your fish and chips or tacones. Then you get to sit on the wooden pier and eat your seafood with a view of the sea planes, sailboats, kayakers and seals in the inner harbour. I will say it again, is worth the line up!
#1 Feed the Seals at Oak Bay Marina
Our number one thing to do in Victoria BC is to feed the seals at Oak Bay Marina. The harbour seals are super fun and entertaining as you throw them frozen fish pieces. You will love capturing their cute faces for your instagram feed. This is always the highlight of our visitors’ stay.
So there you have it. Our top 10 things to do in Victoria BC. What are your favourite things to do in Victoria BC? Would you change the order of our list? What would you add? What would you take away? Leave your comments, let us know.

Street Level Espresso, Victoria, BC in 4k
This coffee shop is located in the old Canada Permanent Mortgage location, in the Ritz Hotel building. As you can see that they didn't get all of the old Mortgage place. This is the old Canada Permanent Mortgage location looking to the back of the building. This is looking to the front doors in the spot where the coffee shop is located is where they had what looks to be an office.
Street Level Espresso is a long established espresso bar serving roasted beans, Melinda's Biscotti, and other idems. Location on Fort Street, close to Douglas Street, has a very high pedestrian traffic.
They have been in business for sevel years. As you look though all of her posts and reviews, it seams like they have several costumers that were pleased. Then they had a lot of construction in front of business that keeped people away from coming inside. She said in one of her facebook posts the following.
Really??? Still the Fences are up?
Business has been dismal since they busted open the last piece of sidewalk.
I even asked the mayor and council to hold off until the fall to let us make a little money.
When will it be finished??
Many of you know the construction has taken a toll on our business. We are looking at reducing hours.
Then during vacation she put business up for sale on August 22, 2018.
The road work looks like it was very damaging to her business. It also looked like she was moving into politics about the same time.
There should be a better way to do things.
That sounds like power wants to stay in power. Could be wrong I don't know the local rules, i'm sure someone will fill me in the comment section.
Thank-you for all your comments and viewing the video. I have other videos I would like you to view.

Fishhook Restaurant Victoria BC and a visit from a friend - Vlog102
For show notes click on the link above
This week I met up with a longtime friend, almost 20 years now, Cary, who was visiting from Toronto, at Fishhook Restaurant in Victoria BC.
Fishhook is a fabulous, cozy restaurant serving local seafood in the heart of downtown Victoria BC on Fort Street. We enjoyed sablefish pakoras to start and then Cary had the pondicherry and I had the line and sinker. Fishhook has a super tasty indo-french inspired menu. I love the flavours of their fusion style dishes.
Cary and I had a great time catching up over dinner and then we caught you up on our almost twenty year long relationship. I met Cary when she first attended one of my Mom and Baby fitness classes. Our kids are almost the exact same age. Cary also took strollercize with me. Cary was inspired by fitness and went on to become a fitness instructor herself.
Cary and I worked alongside each other in the fitness industry in Toronto for many years. Most notably at University of Toronto in Scarborough. We both spoke about how well we were supported there both by our students but also by our bosses who were more like mentors and incredibly powerful support systems.
Cary has been incredibly supportive of Yoga with Melissa since its inception. She thought she was only in 2 episodes, but as we started to put this video together we kept uncovering more and more episodes in which she offered her time in those early days. Thank you so much Cary.
Namaste, Melissa and Cary.
