फोर्ट विलियम के बारे में रोचक तथ्य || Interesting facts about Fort William in Hindi || Fort William
Fort William is a fort in Calcutta (Kolkata), built during the early years of the Bengal Presidency of British India. It sits on the eastern banks of the River Hooghly, the major distributary of the River Ganges. One of Kolkata's most enduring Raj-era edifices, it extends over an area of 70.9 hectares.
The fort was named after King William III.[1] In front of the Fort is the Maidan, the largest park in the city. An internal guard room became the Black Hole of Calcutta
There are two Fort Williams. The original fort was constructed by the British East India Company under the orders of Sir John Goldsborough.[2] Sir Charles Eyre started construction near the bank of the Hooghly River with the South-East Bastion and the adjacent walls. It was named after King William III in 1700. John Beard, Eyre's successor, added the North-East Bastion in 1701, and in 1702 started the construction of the Government House (Factory, see Factory (trading post)) at the centre of the fort. Construction ended in 1706. The original building had two stories and projecting wings. In 1756, the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj Ud Daulah, attacked the Fort, temporarily conquered the city, and changed its name to Alinagar. This led the British to build a new fort in the Maidan.
Robert Clive started rebuilding the fort in 1758, after the Battle of Plassey (1757); construction was completed in 1781 at a cost of approximately two million pounds. The area around the Fort was cleared, and the Maidan became the Lungs of Kolkata. It stretches for around 3 km in the north-south direction and is around 1 km wide.
The Old Fort was repaired and used as a customs house from 1766 onwards.
Today Fort William is the property of Indian Army. The headquarters of Eastern Command is based there, with provisions for accommodating 10,000 army personnel. The Army guards it heavily, and civilian entry is restricted.
Much of Fort William is unchanged, but St Peter's Church, which used to serve as a chaplaincy centre for the British citizens of Kolkata, is now a library for the troops of HQ Eastern Command.

Fort William in Kolkata stands majestically on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River. History reveals that there were two Fort Williams, the old and the new. The original Fort William was built in 1696. It earlier consisted of a two storied building and the guard room of this building.
During the Plassey war in 1757, Siraj Ud Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal attacked on the fort and defeated the Britishers. The prisoners were captured in a dungeon and the incident is known as black hole tragedy. Post attack, the British became aware of their weakness and strengthened the Fort. Sir Robert Clive commenced the building of the new fort completed in 1780.
Fort William owing to its octagonal shape faces the River Ganga from three sides. The other five sides are embraced in lush green gardens. The fort is enclosed by a moat that could be filled with water when required. The Fort also has a facility to accommodate ten thousand interns. The huge archway is popularly known as “Plassey Gate”. There are six entry points namely Chowringhee, Plassey Calcutta, Water Gate St Georges and the Treasury Gate. In 1928, St. Peter Church was constructed inside the fort.

20th June 1756: British prisoners locked in the 'Black Hole of Calcutta'
The East India Company had built Fort William to guard their trading base at Calcutta at a time when the provincial governors of the Mogul empire, known as nawabs, wielded significant power. The Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-daula, was concerned that the Company had begun to strengthen the fort in response to French interests in the area. Fearing that a stronger fortress would undermine his own political power in the province, he ordered the work to stop. When the British refused to comply he sent an army of a reported 50,000 soldiers, 500 elephants and 50 cannon to lay siege to the fortress.
The nawab’s army met very little resistance as it advanced through Calcutta towards the fort, so the majority of British residents fled to the ships in the harbour. A small garrison remained in the fort under the command of John Zephaniah Holwell, an inexperienced military commander whose primary role was as a tax collector.
Unable to defend the fortress, Holwell was forced to surrender on the afternoon of 20 June. He later reported that at 8pm 146 people were imprisoned in the fort’s tiny 4.30m. × 5.50m lock-up, of whom only 23 survived the night due to heat exhaustion and suffocation.
Reports of the incident prompted a mixture of British anger and patriotism, and led to a violent retaliation by Robert Clive the following year.
It is now known that Holwell’s figures were exaggerated, but a comprehensive study of the incident undertaken by Professor Brijen Gupta in the late 1950s concluded that of the lower number of around 64 prisoners, only 21 came out alive the next morning.

NCC DRILL 31st BENGAL BN FORT WILLIAM, KOLKATA
During the British Raj the Indian Armed Forces essentially used the British (English language) drill commands. Soon after independence, the drill commands were Indianised. The official language of the armed forces is Hindi and thus Hindi words were used where ever possible. Some of the state police units however still continue to use British drill commands.
Story Behind Black Hole Of Calcutta
The Black Hole of Calcutta was a small prison or dungeon in Fort William where troops of Siraj ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal, held British prisoners of war for one fatal night on 20 June 1756.
John Zephaniah Holwell, one of the British prisoners and an employee of the East India Company, said that, after the fall of Fort William, the surviving British soldiers, Anglo-Indian soldiers, and Indian civilians were imprisoned overnight in conditions so cramped that many people died from suffocation and heat exhaustion, and that 43 of 64 prisoners of war imprisoned there died.
