Marlin Fishing Caught & Released Due to Daily Limit Cabo San Lucas - San Jose del Cabo
Đức-Hoàng Frank Nguyễn & Minh Tran caught a Marlin in our 1st hour of Deep Sea Fishing Trip in San Jose Del Cabo on Sunday, April 2, 2017. This clip is about the 2nd Marlin caught and we had to release it due to our Boat Daily Limit. The first Marlin was over 100 lbs and over 6 ft long. We almost caught another 100+ lbs Wahoo but it got away.
We really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in San Jose del Cabo. This was my (Minh's) second Marlin Fishing trip and I really like this SJD crew much better than the first crew from Cabo San Lucas. Not only Captain Fernando and his deckhand Alfonso were quite helpful during our 6 hours fishing trip, they put in their best efforts to make sure we had a fun and productive trip with them. Even after our first Marlin, Captain Fernando continued to search for other big fish in this part of Pacific Ocean. We almost caught a 100+ lbs Wahoo. We attempted to catch the Wahoo again but ended up catching a second Marlin...in the amazing first hour. After realizing that our second catch was a Marlin, Captain Fernando and deckhand Alfonso showed us the Catch & Release technique wherein I was able to capture my buddy Frank's reeling in the second Marlin on this video...and it turned out to be a memorable Frank's first Deep Sea Fishing experience in Los Cabos.
Our Deep Sea Fishing trip with Captain Fernando was simply an amazing deep sea experience for anyone...anytime...bar none...as compared to our first trip, and other fishing trips. Captain Fernando did not take us back to the Marina after our catch of the first Marlin. During the trip, Captain Fernando looked out for best fishing spots on his radar and from his top deck while Deckhand Alfonso worked in tandem with the captain to check and replaced baits to lure different types of fish.
At the dock, Captain Fernando filleted the fish and Alfonso vacuum packed the filets for us in ziplock bags without any additional charge as compared to the folks in Cabo San Lucas Marina - a saving of almost $200 for all the extra fees in Cabo San Lucas. Furthermore, Captain Fernando did not take any of the fish filet as compared to the CSL captain who took about a 1/3 of our catch after charging us a much higher fee ($600 vs $400). We took the filets back to the hotel and they froze them for us without any charges. By providing this extra service post docking, Captain Fernando saved us at least $200 as compared to having to pay $30 for the CSL folks for filleting our catch and $2/pound for vacuum-packed the filets.
We strongly recommend folks to explore the other side of Los Cabos because there are 2 sides: Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. There is not much night life in SJD (San Jose del Cabo) but the food is (better in my opinion) for about half of the price as compared to CSL (Cabo San Lucas).
This was exactly what we did, we explored DISTRICTO del ARTE - an Art District in SJD that we recommend you to visit. We took half a day discovering art district in SJD and were amazed of the quality of art galleries there. If you have to choose one gallery to visit, then we recommend Frank Arnold Gallery His wife Carmen showed us around their gallery and private residence. Frank took time to show us his finished and unfinished art works. My friend Frank even bought a piece of statute from this FrankArnold.
Within a half-miles radius of SJD Art District, there are crazily amazing restaurants we experienced: (1) Mariscos El Toro Güero - you have to try the famous ALMEJA Chocolata Chocolate Clams dishes when you visit Los Cabo. During our 5 days stay here, we made 3 visits to this restaurant just for Almeja and octopus dishes; (2) Barrio de Tango Restaurante Argentino - The steak and Sangria here is out of this world great; (3) Los Claros - not quite great as Toro but a great place to snack on Almeja (3 clams for 52 peso - unheard of price for fresh Almeja); ....and away from the civilization - down a pothole-riddled road, and up a steep dirt lane there is (4) Flora Farms - an awesome oasis of farm-to-table place you must visit. After spending a crazy night bar hopping in CSL, we spent a way in the SJD art district and ended with a trip to Flora Farms. Strolling the field, listened to soft live music in the garden, sipping wine in an Oasis of Monet-like garden while birds and bees added to this natural decorum.
Overall, this was a great get-away weekend and a very successful fishing trip. We will definitely bring our families to San Jose del Cabo next time. Needless to say, SJD is etched as one of our Top-10 Boys-Trips.
Did I mention that after filleting all Marlin meat, Captain Fernando took out soy sauce and wasabi, and we had the freshest Marlin sushi right there at the SJD Marina (by Hotel El Ganzo). Marlin sushi fresh off the ocean...you can't beat that!
