Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike | Fox Glacier, New Zealand | Wild Kiwi
Ticking off a massive New Zealand bucket list moment - the Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike. We took a helicopter to the base of Fox Glacier and hiked through the ice, climbing through ice caves and squeezing our way through cracks in the ice. Such an incredible day!
We also jumped onto to quad bikes and drove through rainforest, mud and glacier fed waters - what a day!

We drove up the west coast to visit two NZ glaciers: Fox Glacier and Franz Joseph!

Exploring Franz Josef Glacier
I spent enough time in Franz Josef, New Zealand that I managed to explore the glacier in every way possible.
I first walked out to Franz Josef Glacier. It took about an hour to get to the car park and then another 1.5 hours in the valley. This is the free way to see the glacier but you can't actually get to walk on or touch the glacier. It's unsafe to do so and there are ropes telling you when to stop.
But if you want to get closer there is the option of a scenic helicopter ride. They will fly over the different glacier in the Southern Alps and lands on a snow field on top of Fox Glacier.
The final (and in my opinion, the best) way is to take a guided tour. This tour will get you walking on and through Franz Josef Glacier. It's about a 3 hour walk and you get to really explore the glacier in all its glory.

Today we are going to one of the main attractions of the New Zealand West Coast, the Franz Josef Glacier. Although we do have a heli-hike planned, the weather is too bad for any flights onto the glacier today – a common occurrence that you should prepare for if going to Franz Josef. However, we found one of the great rainy day activities for Franz Josef Glacier: the Glacier Hot Pools.
The Glacier Hot Pools in Franz Josef are surrounded by native rainforest and consist of three main hot pools, all with names written in Maori. Even the spring water used in the pools have a Maori legend behind them. The main pools vary in temperatures between 36 – 40 degrees Celsius. We have 90 minutes to enjoy these popular New Zealand hot pools.
After relaxing in these Franz Josef hot pools we move onto our own private pool, which is down a rainforest walkway. Here we have a small hot pool and shower/changing area to ourselves surrounded by magnificent forest. It’s the perfect place to relax and talk about our upcoming adventures here in Franz Josef on the South Island West Coast.

We had the opportunity to work with Across Country Quad Bikes in Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand. Here is the short sizzle reel we created for their sales office. What a fun day on the Quads - Their staff are highly professional, and know the terrain very well. You just can't beat the experience of riding through tropical rain forest, followed by the terminal moraine/glacial river areas. And with the backdrop of the Franz Josef Glacier!

Starting our adventures in New Zealand and what a beautiful place it is. We explore where the best places are in Queenstown travel tips. Landed in Queenstown and woke up in the morning to see the most incredible view as the sun rise behind Lake Wakatipu. We drove our way to Franz Josef and Fox Glacier passing the best roads in New Zealand. There was also a brief stop in Wanaka. Our New Zealand travel video starts now. It was a shame that we could not do the Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike so we did the Lake Matheson walk instead.

Franz Josef Glacier was first explored in 1865 by geologist Julius von Haast, who named it after the Austrian emperor. The glacier is five kilometres from the town of the same name, and a 1.5 hour walk will take you to within 750m of its terminal face.
There's a range of natural attractions in close proximity to Franz Josef Glacier Village. Lose yourself in the rainforests, waterfalls, and lakes.
