PUNTING ON THE AVON RIVER CHRISTCHURCH, NZ | THINGS TO DO IN CHRISTCHURCH
Punting on the Avon river in Christchurch is the top thing to do in the city. It is beautiful and if the weather is good, it is even better. Punting is a really romantic activity whether you are a local or a tourist in Christchurch.
Despite all that Christchurch has been through over the last decade, the city is still beautiful. Punting on the Avon epitomizes that and is a very romantic attraction in the garden city.
Here our amazing 10 day adventure through the South Island of New Zealand comes to an end. We have had the most amazing time and cannot believe what a beautiful country we live in.
Christchurch has so many things to do and see, it has had a rough time recently but people and the city have shown huge amounts of resilience to keep positive.
Our favorite things to do are; Punting on the Avon, the tram, the earthquake museum, the Margaret Mahy playground and Cathedral Square.
Kia ora (hello). Thankyou so much for watching this video. I really appreciate you taking the time to support my channel. Feel free to subscribe if you want to see more of my travels and shenanigans.

Christchurch, New Zealand. History, Climate etc
Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Canterbury Region. Christchurch is known as the Garden City. Christchurch is mostly flat, so many people get around on bicycles. Christchurch is third-most populous city behind Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand.
LOCATION
The Christchurch urban area lies on the South Island's east coast, just north of Banks Peninsula. The Avon River flows through the centre of the city, with an urban park located along its banks. the river was named after the River Avon in Scotland by Deans brothers whose farm was the earliest European settlement in the area.
HISTORY
Archaeological evidence found in a cave at Redcliffs in 1876 has indicated that the Christchurch area was first settled by moa-hunting tribes about 1250 CE. Christchurch became a city by Royal Charter on 31 July 1856, making it officially the oldest established city in New Zealand. The name of Christchurch was agreed on at the first meeting of the Canterbury Association on 27 March 1848. It was suggested by founder John Robert Godley, whose alma mater was Christ Church, Oxford.
POPULATION
Christchurch is third-most populous city behind Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand.
CLIMATE
Christchurch has a temperate oceanic climate with a mild summer, cool winter, and regular moderate rainfall. It has mean daily maximum air temperatures of 22.5 °C in January and 11.3 °C in July. Summer in the city is mostly warm but is often moderated by a sea breeze from the Northeast. In winter it is common for the temperature to fall below 0 °C (32 °F) at night. Snowfalls occur on average three times per year.
COMMUNICATION
Christchurch is served by Christchurch International Airport and by buses (local and long-distance) and trains. Christchurch International Airport is a major transit airport for international and domestic travellers. The local bus service, known as Metro, is provided by Environment Canterbury. Christchurch has an extensive bus network with bus routes serving most areas of the city and satellite towns. The car, however, remains the dominant form of transport in the city, as with the rest of New Zealand. Historically, Christchurch has been known as New Zealand's cycling city. The central city has very flat terrain and the Christchurch City Council has established a network of cycle lanes and paths
ECONOMY
The agricultural industry has always been the economic core of Christchurch. New Zealand's leading agribusiness, is based in Christchurch. In recent years, regional agriculture has diversified, with a thriving wine industry and beginnings of new horticulture industries such as olive production and processing. Deer farming has led to new processing using antlers for Asian medicine and aphrodisiacs. The high quality local wine in particular has increased the appeal of Canterbury and Christchurch to tourists.
Christchurch is the second largest manufacturing centre in New Zealand behind Auckland, the sector being the second largest contributor to the local economy, In the last few decades, technology-based industries have sprung up in Christchurch.
SPECIALITY
1- Christchurch has one of the highest-quality water supplies in the world, with its water rated among the purest and cleanest in the world.
2- The International Antarctic Centre provides both base facilities and a museum and visitor centre focused upon current Antarctic activities. The United States Navy and United States Air National Guard, augmented by the New Zealand and Australian air forces, use Christchurch Airport as the take-off point for the main supply route to McMurdo and Scott Bases in Antarctica.

Christchurch - January 2019 [4K]
It’s now been eight years since the earthquake. In 2018, major projects completed include the Central City Promenade, City Library, The Terrace, EntX and the restoration of the Lyttelton Time Ball. There was some key movement on the ‘anchor’ projects, with work starting on the Convention Centre, the Town Hall and ‘inner-city living’ apartments, plus key decisions on the Cathedral and Stadium. Tourists levels continue to rise, and with the trial of electric e-scooters, the central city is literally buzzing with people! This is my sixth annual film showing the annual recovery of Christchurch since 2014. My main purpose is to show what's new since last year, but also blend this in with what's great about Christchurch.

How is Christchurch's nightlife?
The Strip, The Grumpy Mole, Sticky Fingers, Boogie Nights - a few of the many hundred cafes, bars and restaurants which were household names in Christchurch prior to February 2011.
The places people went to on a Friday night, where they met friends after work, or partied with the girls on a hens’ night.
Alex Brackstone lost three businesses in the earthquakes - His Lordship’s, Bard on Avon and the Vespa Bar.
Alex still owns the Vespa Bar, in its new High Street location, as well as the Pegasus Arms Restaurant & Bar, and Morrell & Co in Addington.
She says re-opening the Vespa Bar in the central city was “a bit of a fingers up at the earthquakes.”
James Jameson, who first established Le Cafe in the Arts Centre in 1987, entered the central city scene in 2012, opening the St Asaph Street Kitchen & Stray Dog Bar.
It closed it 2015. On reflection, Jameson feels he was “a bit ahead of my time.”
He also believes the central city rebuild was too slow, and played a factor in the demise of his venture.
One of the first bars to open after the earthquake was Johnny Moore’s Smash Palace, originally in Victoria Street, and now cosily ensconced in High Street, close to the new Vodafone building.
“Christchurch has never been so up to date as it is now. I wish them all well, some will survive and some won’t, that’s the nature of it.”, says Moore.
He and Brackstone would like to see more inner-city residents, “if you get the residents the rest takes care of itself.”
So what do they think of the new central city offerings? Alex Brackstone is unsure, “it’s all a little bit clinical, the heart of the place has gone a little bit.”
Certainly, on a chilly mid-winter’s evening there is little sign of life, until our tour reaches the inner city’s newest offering, Little High Eatery.
The place is humming, and there’s a mix of patrons - family groups, couples, young and old.
Little High Eatery, in the new McKenzie & Willis precinct, is a food hall with a variety of eateries and cuisines.
“It feels like people have got a place to be creative here,” says Brackstone.
To watch, join Christchurch Dilemmas on its nightlife tour of the central city chchdilemmas.co.nz
